I knew there was a problem just got my replacement with a bad screen aswell. t mobile has shiped a another 1 too me. this has been a problem since the very beginning with the mytouch 4g. good ones and bad ones .
I have the same exact problem with my HTC Sensation, It looks like crap compared to my older G2. I hope I can exchange it. The back of the box says made in China.
Where is the good screen made from?..im going to buy one soon..i dont want to get the bad screen one...is there a way i can tell from the box or something..so i can give it back without opening it?
people are stupid, I personally have received several mt4g with bad lcds made in taiwan... but i have received one that was from taiwan and had the good lcd... good video, tmobile is yet to acknowledge this issue
@Speedemonero You are the Moron who did not read through all the replies. They were both set exactly the same. You don't have to take my word or video for it just go on to XDA Developers or the T-Mobile MT4G Forum and you will see the same. Have a nice Day!
Who looks at their phone from that angle anyway? When you have the phone right in front of you're face, like your supposed to when your using your cell phone, they look the same.
@IRIE4IPIER Well you would be surprised many people do look at angles. Maybe not to the extreme as I showed because I was showing differences between the two and the differences are more pronounced at the extreme angles. Examples of normal use at angles can be, GPS navigation in a car, Phone on the desk in front of you ETC.
While watching the video I sadly had to admit to myself that my phone exhibited the same fading as the red one. I decided it wasn't that bad and to keep my phone. Had to return it yesterday for an unrelated issue. When the salesman turned the new phone on the first thing I noticed was I could actually see the background despite viewing it at an angle. The difference is big and has NOTHING to do with the settings. This video shows the difference very well...the difference is very noticeable.
Is the panel v1 that bad? i have a panel version 1 mt4g but its perfectly the same as the black one. even at extreme viewing angles the colors dont appear washed out. Now i dont know if i have to believe this or i have to believe the terminal emulator.
This is so true I had the good one then my screen cracked the insurence sent me a new one and it was the bad one I complained to t-mobile and they sent me another bad one its really annoying and I'm tired of starting from scratch and getting these new phone through the mail why can't I just have my good one back! :(
Might be a coincidence but im beginning to think that the red MyTouch4g's are the ones with bad display. My brother has the red one and his display is the same as in the one in the vid. But my black one display matches the one in the vid also. So it makes u wonder.
this phone has a screen similar to the super LCD the nexus one has, u can view it in an angle its awesome i have the slide as well and i cant even begin to try n explain y this type of scree are amazing super responsive, n looks great. i believe u dude, i believe there is a huge difference in quality .. its not just adjusting the screen brightness its the whole screen that is made different.
These guys are morons the brightness is setting differently on the 2 one on right is set low or auto and the other on left is set full brightness this is bogus, show us the brightness settings you idiot
@RUDONIFY No the brightness was set to the same on both of them. I did the test and I set them so I know they were the same. Just do a google search for MT4G Bad display and read through the XDA Forums and the T-Mobile MT4G Forums if you don't believe this video. I no longer have a bad one to compare so it is not possible to make another video. There is another video here on youtube that does show the brightness settings also.
@RUDONIFY I have the same issue on my phone. It's not that big of a deal to me anymore, but this is a known problem. Before posting a negative comment test your theory first. If you can replicate the "washed out look" from changing your brightness settings, I'll eat my words.
Okay, so can someone tell me why the weather forecast were different for each phone, including highs and lows, current temps, conditions outside? Also, why were the buttons on the bottom of the "good screen" phone lite up much differently than the other phone, especially the Genius button. Thanks!
@56suited Well one of them was my wifes, which had already been in use and was probably set on a different weather update profile than from the new one I just received. The other one was right out of the box and had not had any settings or weather syncs changed. As for the buttons I don't know. It seems like the ones on the good display seem to be more sensitive than on the other one. If I hold them both close to a light they will both be the same. They are the same in the dark as well.
@Bobsbbqpattaya Thank you for the honest and detailed answer. Now, off to get mine this week from TM. They're free this weekend, well, all t-mobile phones are...
@56suited These guys on tube are morons the brightness is setting differently on the 2 one on right is set low or auto and the other on left is set full brightness
I didn't know they had 2 different screens! I thought they all came with a washed out look. I passed on the Mytouch 4g for this reason and got me a Nexus S with (same screen as the Samsung Vibrant ). The Nexus S AMOLED screen destroys the MyTouch's screen.
@mynameisroberta LOL, Seriously NO YOU CAN'T. These are two totally different displays with different manufacturer's. If your Happy with the bad display then that's all that matters. But I and many others were not and so we did something about it. Now thanks to all the people who helped this is a known issue now with HTC and T-Mobile.
@keenenrocks1 Its weird. In full brightness I can see all the reds/grays and sorts....but I just still have the glossy clock when at an extreme viewing angle ( I dont know why I would every try read my screen at that angle though lol)
So I have the "bad" screen but it looks just fine to me. Way better than what I had coming from the G1. Guess I'd have to see one of these "good" screens in person to justify a replacement.
@jinc11 If it looks good to you then you will be happy. But later when you see what you missed out on by comparing or looking at a good one, you might have wished you had it replaced while you could have.
My wife and i just purchased two from tmobile. I have the black and she has the white. Mine has the Nicer screen while hers is the over-washed out bad sceen. Talk about luck of the draw
My wife and i just purchased two from tmobile. I have the black and she has the white. Mine has the Nicer screen while hers is the overwashed out bad sceen. Talk about luck of the draw
@Flamingo266 just visit the XDA MT4G General forum and look for the topic. Or look in the T-Mobile MT4G forum. Also on the HTC MT4G forum.and it will tell you all you need to know.
I called HTC's repair dept. to see about paying to have me screen replaced by them with the Sony screen cuz any other way would be a gamble. After 5 escalations, & 3 managers, they all tell me that there was only one screen was used in the production of MT4G, & it's not a Sony screen. You can call & ask for the manager Jackie, & hear it for your self. Also spoke to T-Mobile's tech support dept rep & a manager who had the title of MT4G champion (whatever that means) who told me the same as HTC.
@Synthasix I'm not sure how much I would rely on the data of T-Mobiles Tech support. 99% of them are not even aware of the issue. There was a post in XDA today of a T-mobile manager telling a customer there were 2 different sources of displays used, but neither was inferior to the other and they don't consider it to be and issue.
@Synthasix yeah this is true... some screens are just bad... Talked to many reps and someone from HTC about it... Doesn't matter if its from Taiwan or China you just need to be lucky and get a high quality screen.
@ts0cha0tik If im paying $200 for a phone, i shouldnt have to "be lucky" on picking the phone that works the way it suposed to, im very mad at the people who made the phone, and how they just realesed it, hoping people wouldnt notice the difference so that they wont have to spend another 5 min of their lives to fix it! im very angry about it, and even worse i have a bad screen, this is my 4th time exganing it, im about done and about to go to a different phone comapany, cause this is ridiculous
@Flamingo266 the "good screens" arent even supposed to be in the phone... people just made a big deal out of it so now the so called bad screens are a issue when nothing is really wrong with them. Its more like you get lucky you get a nice HD screen instead of a standard HD screen.... I honestly think people should stop making it a big deal and be happy its not defective. People just simply get lucky and get a better screen than the device was made to have
@ts0cha0tik Yes, and y wouldnt u want the one with the nicer screen!!! ur both paying the same amount of money, u should both get the same thing! its a compete rip off if u ask me!!! u have ur ways of looking at it,and we all our own, even tho ours are the right way to think about it!
@Flamingo266 I agree but nothing is wrong with either of the screens... I have the so called "bad screen" and it doesnt look bad to me at all... I would have been nice to have the better screen but whatever its not like its defective... it works and it does look great. Like i said before... no one would have noticed anything different if people didnt make a big deal out of it. You would have went home and been happy you have your new MyTouch 4G and never saw a flaw in the screen.
Like a voice in the wilderness. Nothing inferior or about the 'inferior' screen. The one on the left is just gets darker at an angle and the one on the right gets lighter. Viewing angles don't really look better on the superior screen in this video. Getting darker at an angle is also a flaw. The 'bad' screen is far better than the screens on the mytouch g3 and nobody ever complained about those. LCD's are not the perfect screen material.
@0lpainless atleast someone has a brain here lmfao... seriously both screens have their advantages and noone seems to notice that but us lmfao oh and my friend @synthasix
i have the white mytouch 4g made in china and i got the bad screen or type 1. sucks so i had tmobile replace it but i gotta wait like 4 days till i get it.. :( i bought the phone brand new too. wish i would have known this sooner.
okay so I have a type 1 and yet no matter what angle I look at my phone from, I'm not seeing that extreme white blurry screen depicted in the video when looking at it from any angle, top bottom, left, or right. this might not be the best way to tell what type you have :-/
@Synthasix Post some pictures if you can as there has been no one yet with a type 1 that has a good screen so you would be the first person out of hundreds. You might look at the clock digits and see if there is any white reflective look where the top half meets the bottom half. Also you might try the white block wallpaper.
If this is true it will be the first one and I would like to see it.
What brightness settings do u have, and if I can see a difference b/w the red and orange on full brightness does that mean my screen is good? Is there any test I can do on my own to find out?
@Chromespan The brightness on both units were set to the same level. This is the best test to view at an angle.
The best way is to download Terminal Emulator from the Market. Restart your device and run this command after you open the terminal emulator "dmesg" without quotes then enter. You will get a bunch of data just scroll back up to the top. and look around line 14-15 and you will see " tag_panel_parsing: panel type=2". =1 is bad display, =2 is a good display
@Bobsbbqpattaya i checked, it was type 2. Thanks for the help, i feel alot better now, but i've owned the phone for less than 14 days so i could have replaced it if it was bad, i just wanted to make sure.
@Synthasix Well I wish this were true. There have been many made from China that were bad and many from Taiwan that have good displays. It does seem that the LCS-SH-C2 in the LCD type is from SHARP and the bad one, and the LCD-SO-C2 is from SONY and is the good one.
@Bobsbbqpattaya how did u find the part were it says the whole "lcd-so-c2"?...is there something u go to in settings to find that? im planning on purchasin this phone very soon and i would hate too buy a shitty phone
So you can only exchange it within 14 days? I got mine sent almost upon release. It's hard for me to tell what I have, would need to see a side by side comparison of my unit.
@whiteboygotswag Well if you are in your first 14 days or haven't purchased yet try the T-Mobile Corp stores. If you get a bad one take it back. If you get another bad one take it to another store etc etc. until you get what you paid for.
@lanceealy Don't let that stop you. The newer shipments seem to have more of the good displays. And even if you get a bad one you can change it in the store, and in other stores until you get a good one within 14 days. If you still had no luck then Call customer service. This is the best Android phone on the market right now. Don't give up until you get what you are happy with.
@mingkee27, Yes I was surprised when I was in the car using it for GPS and I took a rest from driving and was in the passenger seat and could not see the screen very good because the angle was pointed to the driver slightly plus my distance and angle. I asked can you see the GPS ok? And she said yes, so it had me thinking from the start.
Actually it is so much better and the video shows much better than the pictures do.
Great job buddy. Hopefully T-mobile/HTC scraps those bad screens. This phone kicks all asses when you get one with a "good screen" the other ones just look so "meh" in comparison....thanks again!

I got mine from Costco and it seems to be the good one.

RT @kmobs: look under the battery. Made in Taiwan = bad. Made in China = good.
Synthasix 1 year ago

It's hard for me to tell what I have, would need to see a side by side comparison of my unit.

so where should we get it from?
whiteboygotswag 1 year ago
@whiteboygotswag Well if you are in your first 14 days or haven't purchased yet try the T-Mobile Corp stores. If you get a bad one take it back. If you get another bad one take it to another store etc etc. until you get what you paid for.

wow now i am skeptical about getting this phone because i dont want to end up with that horrible screen
lanceealy 1 year ago
@lanceealy Don't let that stop you. The newer shipments seem to have more of the good displays. And even if you get a bad one you can change it in the store, and in other stores until you get a good one within 14 days. If you still had no luck then Call customer service. This is the best Android phone on the market right now. Don't give up until you get what you are happy with.

I got mine from retention, and the screen is really good.
I never thought some units have such horrible screen.
mingkee27 1 year ago
