Karl Marx(not "Carl")'s influences were exclusively European, mainly centered on German idealism(Kantian and Hegelian) and early French socialism(the Paris Commune and Jean-Jacques Rousseau). No, Gulfporter, it's an ignorant question. most of the pre-Spanish-invasion traffic in Mexico-Tenochtitlan was in canoes, in the city's canal system. The draw bridges were so foot traffic could get over the canals. They were not not part of any defence system

I disagree. It noted that the canoes could pass under the bridges. Drawbridges exist for two reasons: to allow larger traffic through low bridges, and for defense. Since the canoe was the largest vessel discussed, then the latter would seem to make sense. Also, building a city on an artificial island was a tremendous expenditure of resources reasonably presumed to be for defensive purposes.
