For example, in the previous episode, the scandalized politician could have been funny, if it was played truthfully. But the writers went for over-the-top gimmicky which sacrificed the humor. C-Spot - Gaytown can be funny, and sometimes it is. But work harder at satire, rather than merely accomplishing parody.

When it's good, it's making a commentary on homophobia and heterosexism in our society. The protagonist having to "come out" to his gay father is a great example. Other times, it's just playing on tired stereotypes without really saying anything, such as the "fannypack law." This show has potential, but all too often takes the easy way out.

killerkeith, I'm not sure I agree with you about the fannypack law part. My brother is forever catching sh*t from people for how he dresses, even though a lot of the time it isn't really that over-the-top. To me it seems like more of the "Trun about is fair play" which Gaytown does a lot of. I too enjoy satire as a humour form, but the majority of Americans are satirically disabled, and if you want them to understand what they put GLBT through every day you need to use what most relate to best.

I feel for your brother. Fanny pack or no fanny pack, people judge you based on how you look and act, and if you look and act different than what they're comfortable with, then oftentimes they'll say or do something stupid to make themselves feel better about it.

As for American being satirically disabled, I beg to differ - Mr. Show, The Daily Show, Colbert Report, to name a few

You need to understand, they are also playing old gimmicks with straight people as well (sports ban, for instance). This is supposed to be over the top just to show people who silly and wrong it is to discriminate and they do so showing how it would be if the tables were turned. I am a member of the HRC, fyi. :)

So I have now watched all the Gaytown episodes up to this point. I want to like this series. I love subversive queer humor when it is done intelligently. Scott Thompson from KITH with his Buddy Cole character = genius. Stand-up comics such as Ant = hacks. The difference? One is intelligently making social commentary on being gay while the other is just talking about being gay. Gaytown is hit or miss for this reason.
