Great review as usual. Since you have the Gerber Freeman and the Benchmade Rant drop point. I would like to know which one you prefer? There is s good price difference. It seems both knives are similar in use to some degree. I wonder which handle is more functional. I really like cocobolo wood, but is the Benchmade rubber style handle a bit more grippy?
Great work on the reviews. The only problem is that everytime I see one your reviews I end up spending more money.
@mikedifeo - I would pick this Freeman for general outdoor stuff. The steel is very good. But I would pick the Benchmade Rant if any sort of weapon use might be needed, against animals or whatnot.
I use this knife for everything, always on my belt. I have field dressed a few deer and moose already, it worked excellent. I am a huge fan of the s30v steel my spyderco folder uses the same. great edge retention. I spend a lot of time in the bush and this a great belt knife.
XLNT Video. Good point on the increase in value. So many people buy the junk china stuff that won't be worth a dime. I have knives from the 70's and 80's that were originally 25 dollars now worth well into the 2-3 hundred dollar range.
u can't really review an outdoor's knife without using it, it seems a bit thin for an outdoor's knife. Sure mora's and etc are thin too, but that ís one of their drawbacks.
@nephildevil That's kind of like saying you can't review a dagger without sticking it through someone's skull. Gerber Freeman is a very widely used knife here in the US, there are already multiple reviews (check the sidebar) of the Freeman batoning through wood. So, I don't need to re-create reviews that others have already done, especially with the $110 version of it.
@nephildevil Being thin is also what makes Moras cut well, also, which knives are made to do--not pry open manhole covers. Sure, you may have to baton one day if you get lost or something, which a Mora can handle if you're not a Hulkish brute about it, but I can wanting something a little more substantial for that. For everything else, which will account for a vast majority of use, they're the cat's ass, especially for the price.
Great review! That knife has a great look to it. I am thinking about purchasing the standard version to try it out. The handle looks really comfortable. Awesome job!
Nice knife . I have several Gerber knifes and they are good value knives. Too bad it was not a better sheath. I got a sog team leader with duratech 20CV and ended up with the same type of sheath...Argh!! The sheath is ok, but you get spoiled to a
I was thinking to myself "Hasn't he reviewed this knife before?" then you pull out the folder at 1:35... thought I was having a bit of deja vu or maybe you were losing it and re-posting/re-reviewing knives... LOL
Great review, and it's nice that thing doesn't have the usual Gerber "prison gray" color... lol
Very good looking knives!!! Not really a big fan of Gerber from previous experiences with customer service, etc. but this one might make me look at them again LOL. Yes your right about Cabella's thankfully there isn't one near me. Thanks for sharing and posting.
@DavidML777 Its better for hunting than outdoor the blade is not thick enough ...

I hate using s30v or 154cm as a outdoors knife. It chips easy and when it does. It is hard to sharpen.

@GforceDown Yeah totally, I always try to get the more limited and high quality editions of a knife, budget permitting.

The drop point like that is one of my favorites especially for survival. You can get by with a clip point just be careful not to pry with it!!!

Now, if only Gerber would make the LMF in S30V or even 154CM. Oh well, wishful thinking.
