Anyone who can hold our spellbound interest for over 9 minutes with nothing but a guitar and spotty harmonica, has got to be one of the top musicians of all time. It just does not come any better.
What a great tune .Another Neil Young gem. If you can get to hear the electric live version Neil Young put out on a portugues single with Crazy Horse it takes this tune somewhere else manic is one word to describe it.
It's Dylanesque in it's sarcasm..I prefer the original version for it's innocence, and lack of harmonica filler...Neil must have some STRANGE dreams....maybe he's just better at re-calling them ; )

This version is just too fucking much. Perceval at his best. 1after909, I hope you do a cover of this tune and post it. Tuned down a step with bflat harp, right?
@budcowan isn't it great bud...he truely weaves his magic on this one....you're right the song is tuned down one step.. since the orginal key of the song is in A one step below that is E so that would be the harp key....i .m tempted to learn it now...but it's so long ...thanks for asking
I was at this show,I got first row tickets from a broker as a wedding anniversary present (to me).Trey Anistacio of Phish sat right behind me and went back stage to visit with Neil at the intermission.Neil had been doing a set list for most shows but seemed to change his mind when the crowd kept asking for Pocohantas.Looking forward to his solo tour catching him in Nashville.
I'm one of the biggest Neil Young fans there is, hell I even have "Rust Never Sleep's tattoo'd on my forearm...but this song...is just plain awful. It's not as bad here as on his first solo album or Canterbury and Riverboat as his guitar playing has gotten a lot smoother and made it more listenable...but the lyrics are just awful randomness.
i'm a prettybig fan too.. i have a large collection bootlegs of his live performances, and i'd have to say this is one of his best performances.the sheer mood of this song is captivating great harp and as far as the lyrics go ...its about a dream... which can have some awfully random. images
@BarstoolBlues33 - I disagree. I'm also a huge Neil Young fan, and I love this song. I prefer the version from his first solo album to this one, although I like the pictures accompanying this. I was told years ago that this song was about an acid trip, for what it's worth.
This song I've loved since I bought the album just over 20 yrs. ago- I wasn't a Neil fan 'til the late 80's- but so very glad I discovered this song! Never heard one quite like it....ever! AWESOME!!! Its' like....meditational.
It is Neilesque cause HE admitted that Bob's influence was great on that song.
It's not bad to be either Neil-or- Bobesque. It's just the song is boring and long to me but has a couple of good jokes. It's off Neil's first solo record which has great songs like the Loner. I've been waiting for You. Emporer of Wyoming, If I could have her tonight .. all much better. Look if you like this .. enjoy. I am not infringing on your rights just by being outspoken ..
Good that you give me tips, but unnecessary! I´ve been listening to Neil since I was 18 back in 1983 and I know every single song...Of course, Neil was influenced by Dylan. Who wasn´t in those days? This song boring? Well, we have slight disagreement here, I´m afraid..
I didn't mean to be condescending. Also there was a lot of talk among critics as how Dylanesqe the Trip was - not many songwriters were using abstractions as was Dylan. John said "dylan influenced him to write "You've got to hide your love away" Hey do you like Neils "one more sign"? That is one of my favs.
I have loved his eponymous first solo album since, what, 1970? It's my favouite. Please post the record version. 1 I cannot believe that this ie the only post on the world-wide web!
Can't tune my guitar on that song. Could any body give some help? Any informations on Neil's harp are welcome as well. Thanks to the musicians and Neil's fans
Learned long ago & have book here. Tuning not mentioned..I played standard. Only other tuning I hear him do is drop-D or double-drop-D. Could be here by ear, not on NY album. The main chord (first) is A add9--take the C# off the 2nd string to be a B. Then to C to D to C, And on. Chorus is E to D to C to A add9. Later it uses A major, sometimes A7 for A add9; 1 place A9. ? Per book later an Em7 somewhere--chorus?, & an Esus4--back to E major? Book's often wrong. Basics ACDC; EDCA prob right.
Perhaps my favourite singer when it comes to deep issues on life and so on, you certainly need to be in the right mood for Neil and yes as was described fro a previous comment is music is certainly hauntingly beautiful from the folk level a lot of truths told through his music so far this is my favourite from Neil.
I still love the original version on his first solo album Neil Young. go back and listen to that entire entire album sometime, all the songs are incredible and still sound fresh.
Neil did a great electric version of this song a few times on his 1973 "Time Fades Away" Tour. The recording from 18th Feb at Baton Rouge is terrific, very manic and sardonic.
if you got a version of that song and that tour youre a criminall..... ....FOR NOT UPLOADING IT!!!!!!! i almost shit my pants when i think about that song on that tour plz upload plz plz plz!! i will give you 1000 dollars cash!!!!!!!! and kiss your feet and give a reacharound-if youre in to that (im not but its worth it) gordon morrice UPLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too EmpressOfWyoming. No-other artist comes close to Neil. His lyrics, his voice and his many and varied guitar sounds always take me on an etheral journey. I too got my first Neil album (Harvest)in 1972 as an 11 year old - been mesmerised and singularly loyal to Neil (and Crazy Horse) ever since.
Sure ,great stuff .. actually i don't really dislike his electrical songs , " for the turnstiles " is a good one too ... but when u compare for exemplo "ohio" band's version to it's solo acoustic perfomance u will know what i'm talking about ...as long he comes alone he sounds much better , even electrical...
what an artist ,a complete artist ! i wonder how greater he would have been without a band . I like neil young as neil young ,forget the "crazy horse " and the electrical stuff ...
I'm wondering if you have ever seen NY live? If you had, you'd see in his eyes, and realize how alive he comes when he straps on that Gretch. He offers up his solo pieces in sacrifice so that his electric pieces can run wild and free and live. Neil Young without an electric guitar is an unfulfilled experience, for him and us.
No , i've never seen NY live , lucky you if you did , believe you or not , i'm 39 and just started to listen to him one year ago but he is already on my top list . Sometimes i post one comment or two but i haven't got that clue to be honest ...Sorry for the poor english .
dude to get these versions u would need to check out bootlegs, alas most of neils best material is unofficial. but the studio version of this is on the "neil young" album.the archives should have lots of this stuff on it but its anyones guess when hes finally gonna releaase it...
I went to see Neil last sunday in Dublin and got this flyer "NEIL YOUNG. ARCHIVES VOLUME .1 "FINALLY!" Neil Young archives Vol .1 coming November 08. Hope this clears it up for you.
Wow, I didn't know he EVER played this live. I like this version better than the album version (or, as Neil himself says: "Live Music is Better"). I'll bet he needed a lyric sheet to get through this.
Neil Young at his best--as always! I saw him do this in 1999 in Berkeley and was blown away. I think he is tuned down a step. But what key harmonica is he using? Can anyone help?
I had never heard a live version of this song, it's cool to hear but the album version is a better performance. I think that there is some level of symbolism in this song.
"I used to be a folk singer....you told me I was jive"
That has to be a reference to his early career.
Is that last line really about Stephen Stills?
Help me swing the axe sounds like a reference to Buffalo Springfield.
This song is prettimuch just meant to be funny, it bears little (if any) significant underlying meaning. It's supposed to be like a dream, random and strange.
I disagree sir, people always think this when faced with abstraction. You must understand, Neil toked recreationally, I'm sure if you've done it before you'll understand that you don't think straight
i really enjoy listening to this song but,i m still not so sure about the signification...phrases like(..an indian in the corner, tryin on my clothes..?)
An indian in the corner trying on my clothes, God dude thats pretty straightforward. Basically its about how Indians, the natives of America are in the background for being the true owners of the land. Now they're trying to catch up with the white Americans and thats what trying on the clothes means
hey mydog...that image was taken from one of the pictures on the video..you tube puts an image from the video and chose that one...made me mad..I put it up for the line "there was an Indian in the corner trying on my clothes" Like America did with the song horse with no name
great video
can u tell me please what soft (and how) did u use to make this great slideshow?
Thanx

"I used to be a folk singer....you told me I was jive"
That has to be a reference to his early career.
Is that last line really about Stephen Stills?
Help me swing the axe sounds like a reference to Buffalo Springfield.

This song is prettimuch just meant to be funny, it bears little (if any) significant underlying meaning. It's supposed to be like a dream, random and strange.

I disagree sir, people always think this when faced with abstraction. You must understand, Neil toked recreationally, I'm sure if you've done it before you'll understand that you don't think straight

An indian in the corner trying on my clothes, God dude thats pretty straightforward. Basically its about how Indians, the natives of America are in the background for being the true owners of the land. Now they're trying to catch up with the white Americans and thats what trying on the clothes means
