  • great video

can u tell me please what soft (and how) did u use to make this great slideshow?

    Thanx

  • Anyone who can hold our spellbound interest for over 9 minutes with nothing but a guitar and spotty harmonica, has got to be one of the top musicians of all time. It just does not come any better.

    ronnie wilson

  • Cosmic performance and spirit.

  • What a great tune .Another Neil Young gem. If you can get to hear the electric live version Neil Young put out on a portugues single with Crazy Horse it takes this tune somewhere else manic is one word to describe it.

    regards

    jimmy

  • It's Dylanesque in it's sarcasm..I prefer the original version for it's innocence, and lack of harmonica filler...Neil must have some STRANGE dreams....maybe he's just better at re-calling them ; )

  • @celloprofundo unplugg ur ears man it blows the original away.

he used to be a woman u know.....................

  • @MegaSmokey98 ...it doesn't have the same haunting beauty as the first..sounds like he doing a walk-on..walk on ; )..a throw-away..a b-side...Stephen Stills IS Neil Young, I heard him say it somewhere...I know Elton used to be woman...

  • @celloprofundo

what the hell are you smokin man can i try some

its much more haunting and relaxed

  • @MegaSmokey98 ...the original has more angst...this one sounds like a demo comparitively...the anger in the original gives it more credibility...Neil sounds like he's on Xanax here....ellen degeneress used to be a man you know..

  • This is magic.

  • One must go deep to glean meaning here, but you will run out of air every time. Still we must dive.

  • This is great

  • my father is the biggest neil young fan ever he is so bad that he named me neil and has a portrait of neil young tattooed on is upper arm with theres more to the picture than meets the eye and me and him went to see him live it was AWESOME!!!!

  • @Spudder59 this is great song always liked it ever since i was young kid, Its kind of a funny song like the "indian in the corner trying on my clothes" and "the coroner was friendly I liked him quite a lot" cracks me up. seen him too with my Dad before he died its a trip fathers that like Neil usually have sons that do but he he didnt name me neil thats ok I like my name

  • This is one either you love or hate. Call me weird but I liked how he finally chopped down the palm tree on his friends back ! A couple of other good rambling songs like this are Ambulence Blues(On the Beach) and The Old Homestead.(Hawks and Doves). Nobody can do em better than Neil.

  • love this song! good live version

  • Brilliant and I am sure very rare.I remember when this was released on solo album. No one had a clue what it was about.A brave move to put a totally non pop song on your 1st album. The Master then The Master now. Check out Le Noise.Just got it today .Sounds like back to his best.

  • This version is just too fucking much. Perceval at his best. 1after909, I hope you do a cover of this tune and post it. Tuned down a step with bflat harp, right?

  • @budcowan isn't it great bud...he truely weaves his magic on this one....you're right the song is tuned down one step.. since the orginal key of the song is in A one step below that is E so that would be the harp key....i .m tempted to learn it now...but it's so long ...thanks for asking

  • Love anything NY

  • there was an indian in the corner trying on my clothes.......

  • I was at this show,I got first row tickets from a broker as a wedding anniversary present (to me).Trey Anistacio of Phish sat right behind me and went back stage to visit with Neil at the intermission.Neil had been doing a set list for most shows but seemed to change his mind when the crowd kept asking for Pocohantas.Looking forward to his solo tour catching him in Nashville.

  • Vintage Neil Young: strangest lyric he ever wrote.

  • I'm one of the biggest Neil Young fans there is, hell I even have "Rust Never Sleep's tattoo'd on my forearm...but this song...is just plain awful. It's not as bad here as on his first solo album or Canterbury and Riverboat as his guitar playing has gotten a lot smoother and made it more listenable...but the lyrics are just awful randomness.

  • i'm a prettybig fan too.. i have a large collection bootlegs of his live performances, and i'd have to say this is one of his best performances.the sheer mood of this song is captivating great harp and as far as the lyrics go ...its about a dream... which can have some awfully random. images

  • @BarstoolBlues33 - I disagree. I'm also a huge Neil Young fan, and I love this song. I prefer the version from his first solo album to this one, although I like the pictures accompanying this. I was told years ago that this song was about an acid trip, for what it's worth.

  • @hollykainz i read that since neil had epilepsy he was always afraid to try acid....who knows?

  • @BarstoolBlues33 but...it's what makes him Neil...take or leave it....

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Not a chance dude....loved it since i heard it... the random makes it.

  • @BarstoolBlues33 Isn´t it great that we all have different taste? I think this is one of the best songs ever :-)

  • This song I've loved since I bought the album just over 20 yrs. ago- I wasn't a Neil fan 'til the late 80's- but so very glad I discovered this song! Never heard one quite like it....ever! AWESOME!!! Its' like....meditational.

  • I need a ride!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry but these pictures don't do the song any good. They rather kill the surrealistic imagination

  • Use to smoke on that one, back in the days...Long live Neil!!!

  • This song was panned by the critics in 1970. It's Dylanesque and bad Dylan.

  • No, it isn´t Dylanesque. It´s Neilesque, and why bad? Explain or I don´t believe you!!

  • It is Neilesque cause HE admitted that Bob's influence was great on that song.

It's not bad to be either Neil-or- Bobesque. It's just the song is boring and long to me but has a couple of good jokes. It's off Neil's first solo record which has great songs like the Loner. I've been waiting for You. Emporer of Wyoming, If I could have her tonight .. all much better. Look if you like this .. enjoy. I am not infringing on your rights just by being outspoken ..

  • Good that you give me tips, but unnecessary! I´ve been listening to Neil since I was 18 back in 1983 and I know every single song...Of course, Neil was influenced by Dylan. Who wasn´t in those days? This song boring? Well, we have slight disagreement here, I´m afraid..

  • I didn't mean to be condescending. Also there was a lot of talk among critics as how Dylanesqe the Trip was - not many songwriters were using abstractions as was Dylan. John said "dylan influenced him to write "You've got to hide your love away" Hey do you like Neils "one more sign"? That is one of my favs.

  • NEIL IS THE KING

  • What an astounding evidence of Neil´s greatness!

  • Awesome, you gave so much to music and you still do.

    Long live Neil: )

  • his choice of harmonica here is similar to the effect he used on Furry Sings the Blues, with Joni on the Hejira album. Very spooky.

  • I have loved his eponymous first solo album since, what, 1970? It's my favouite. Please post the record version. 1 I cannot believe that this ie the only post on the world-wide web!

    Thanks:)

  • Can't tune my guitar on that song. Could any body give some help? Any informations on Neil's harp are welcome as well. Thanks to the musicians and Neil's fans

  • Learned long ago & have book here. Tuning not mentioned..I played standard. Only other tuning I hear him do is drop-D or double-drop-D. Could be here by ear, not on NY album. The main chord (first) is A add9--take the C# off the 2nd string to be a B. Then to C to D to C, And on. Chorus is E to D to C to A add9. Later it uses A major, sometimes A7 for A add9; 1 place A9. ? Per book later an Em7 somewhere--chorus?, & an Esus4--back to E major? Book's often wrong. Basics ACDC; EDCA prob right.

  • Guitar tune down one step: D G C F A D, the harp is probably a G. Goodluck on this one.

  • Still think that Neil sounds great unplugged

  • thank you......we would listen to this cruisin at light speed thru space......

  • Perhaps my favourite singer when it comes to deep issues on life and so on, you certainly need to be in the right mood for Neil and yes as was described fro a previous comment is music is certainly hauntingly beautiful from the folk level a lot of truths told through his music so far this is my favourite from Neil.

  • god

  • I prefer his own description: a millionaire hippie!

  • I still love the original version on his first solo album Neil Young. go back and listen to that entire entire album sometime, all the songs are incredible and still sound fresh.

  • Thank you so much for this post, Neil Young live is something everyone ought to experience. Great song, great human being.

  • Oh, now I saw, last trip to tulsa ...

  • How is the song called actually?

  • This sends me shivers down the spine. I didn`t know how great Neil Young is until hearing this song. Thank you for posting.

  • One of my top 20 songs ever! thanx for posting.

  • i remember the first time i listen to neil young when i was a kid ...

those simple folk songs were haunting and make me feel frightened and fascinated at the same time

neil young es más que música folk es más poderoso y mucho mas profundo

    thanks!

  • Neil did a great electric version of this song a few times on his 1973 "Time Fades Away" Tour. The recording from 18th Feb at Baton Rouge is terrific, very manic and sardonic.

  • if you got a version of that song and that tour youre a criminall..... ....FOR NOT UPLOADING IT!!!!!!! i almost shit my pants when i think about that song on that tour plz upload plz plz plz!! i will give you 1000 dollars cash!!!!!!!! and kiss your feet and give a reacharound-if youre in to that (im not but its worth it) gordon morrice UPLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Electric Version is on thr B side of the 45 of Time Fades Away... Not on LP! One of my all time favorites. I have 10 different copies of this from mayy ploaces- looking for the perfect copy!

  • woot

  • Great song. The accoustic guitar and vocal of Neil in this song is very similar to early days of Bob Dylan. The live version from CD 'Sugar Mountain live 1968' is also excellent. I have listened to this live CD more than ten times. Thanks for posting.

  • fuck you bob dylan doesnt even compare they arent in the same category

  • Neil Young is my all time favorite. I have loved him since I was eleven years old and my brother in law gave me Deja Vu. That was autumn of 70. I got to see him live on his Greendale Tour. He played with the energy of a teenager. He's gotten very eccentric, but then this song was released in 1967, so he was eccentric even then. He was a visionary, that's for sure. Love you, Neil. You were my first non Tiger Beat crush.

  • Me too EmpressOfWyoming. No-other artist comes close to Neil. His lyrics, his voice and his many and varied guitar sounds always take me on an etheral journey. Neil's varied music genres continually take me to far away places in my dream consciousness. Last Trip To Tulsa is a brilliant acoustic example. Cortez is a brilliant electric example. I too got my first Neil album (Harvest)in 1972 as an 11 year old - been mesmerised and singularly loyal to Neil (and Crazy Horse) ever since.

  • Neil Young was always eccentric: once he hit

50, it was more apparent. He joined the KMA

(Kiss My Ass) Club after a certain age.

  • It's refreshing to see a video where no one in the comments are agruing..

    Great track.

  • This makes me appreciate live footage more...

  • Sure ,great stuff .. actually i don't really dislike his electrical songs , " for the turnstiles " is a good one too ... but when u compare for exemplo "ohio" band's version to it's solo acoustic perfomance u will know what i'm talking about ...as long he comes alone he sounds much better , even electrical...

  • what an artist ,a complete artist ! i wonder how greater he would have been without a band . I like neil young as neil young ,forget the "crazy horse " and the electrical stuff ...

  • So you like only half Neil Young...

  • you are rigth , only half , but still his best half any way ...

  • Some electrical songs are great, like "Cortez the killer" :)

  • I'm wondering if you have ever seen NY live? If you had, you'd see in his eyes, and realize how alive he comes when he straps on that Gretch. He offers up his solo pieces in sacrifice so that his electric pieces can run wild and free and live. Neil Young without an electric guitar is an unfulfilled experience, for him and us.

  • No , i've never seen NY live , lucky you if you did , believe you or not , i'm 39 and just started to listen to him one year ago but he is already on my top list . Sometimes i post one comment or two but i haven't got that clue to be honest ...Sorry for the poor english .

  • Great stuff!, keep that rare unreleased stuff coming!

  • it came together just as easy as it all fell apart

  • a line between the lines of age ...

  • can you get these songs on an audio cd anywhere? if so which cd?

  • dude to get these versions u would need to check out bootlegs, alas most of neils best material is unofficial. but the studio version of this is on the "neil young" album.the archives should have lots of this stuff on it but its anyones guess when hes finally gonna releaase it...

  • I went to see Neil last sunday in Dublin and got this flyer "NEIL YOUNG. ARCHIVES VOLUME .1 "FINALLY!" Neil Young archives Vol .1 coming November 08. Hope this clears it up for you.

  • Just snag it on iTunes. Simple enough.

  • thanks for uploading. I love this song (and Neil Young)

  • jedyne i niepowtarzalne.

  • Great Cinematography!

I believe "Bernard Shakey," would be very impressed as well as proud, to see his music/lyrics so respectfully treated.

    Thanks.

    rock

  • thank you rockinroller7..That was exactly my intent to treat the song with repecet...and thanks for subing too..

  • Definitely a heart of gold!

this piece of music have a unestimated value!!

    beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

  • i agree live music is better.neil young is great back then and now! forever Young :)

  • better

  • live music is beeter,

    bumber stickers sould be issued!

    forever Young

  • Live music are better

  • heheh well not never twice....you know what i mean....

  • WOW! Never thought I would never find a non album recording of this! Awesome!

  • can someone please tell me what key that harmonica is in? or what type of harmonica it is

  • beautiful VV

  • Beautiful VV

  • Wow, I didn't know he EVER played this live. I like this version better than the album version (or, as Neil himself says: "Live Music is Better"). I'll bet he needed a lyric sheet to get through this.

  • Are you sure this is in 99?

  • absolutely 99

  • What key is the harmonica? doesnt sound like c

  • First time for me...thanks for a very oblique song...the harmonica is as eerie as on that one video of Mr. Soul

  • 1after909, man, another great video,so much detail and a lot of hardwork, thankyou for the love of the great mans music.

  • grandiosa!!!!

  • Neil Young at his best--as always! I saw him do this in 1999 in Berkeley and was blown away. I think he is tuned down a step. But what key harmonica is he using? Can anyone help?

  • neil wants you to relate to the song in any way you can. no specifics in the song. very broad in an emotional sense.

  • That's true, but I'm sure he relates to the song in some way. That's what we are after.

  • I had never heard a live version of this song, it's cool to hear but the album version is a better performance. I think that there is some level of symbolism in this song.

"I used to be a folk singer....you told me I was jive"

That has to be a reference to his early career.

Is that last line really about Stephen Stills?

Help me swing the axe sounds like a reference to Buffalo Springfield.

  • This song is prettimuch just meant to be funny, it bears little (if any) significant underlying meaning. It's supposed to be like a dream, random and strange.

  • I disagree sir, people always think this when faced with abstraction. You must understand, Neil toked recreationally, I'm sure if you've done it before you'll understand that you don't think straight

  • i really enjoy listening to this song but,i m still not so sure about the signification...phrases like(..an indian in the corner, tryin on my clothes..?)

can someone clear it a bit please?

    aight tanx folks

  • An indian in the corner trying on my clothes, God dude thats pretty straightforward. Basically its about how Indians, the natives of America are in the background for being the true owners of the land. Now they're trying to catch up with the white Americans and thats what trying on the clothes means

  • Definitely better than the album version. 10/10.

  • I think I like the album version better. Strange and great song all in one. Who knows what this song means ?

  • Simply awesome.

  • Wow, I agree! Much better and more soulful than the album version!

  • yes, he raely plays this is concert.I like this version so much better than the lp

  • thats cool. i thought neil forgot about this song. great video

  • hey mydog...that image was taken from one of the pictures on the video..you tube puts an image from the video and chose that one...made me mad..I put it up for the line "there was an Indian in the corner trying on my clothes" Like America did with the song horse with no name

  • great song. thank you for it man

  • fantastic

  • I hope tours solo again soon!

But why is there an image of an America album on hear?
