I've bought this kit finally! Love it but i haven't the sam sound on the toms... can you tell me how have you tuned your toms? Higher at the top and lower at the bottom? Please answer
@Ostrica391 This is the kit i play. I am able to get a similar sound from my toms. I use Evans G1 Reso's for the bottom and Evans EC2's for the top. I tighten the bottom heads pretty tight, and then tighten to the tops until the heads are barely resonating then tune them by ear the rest of the way. I hope this helps you out.
"unlimited resonance and volume" hahahaha. Wouldnt that just mean the drums would never reach their loudest and if you hit them, they would ring forever?
@metalliclark I would assume the heads that the shell pack comes with, which are remo emperors on the toms, and ambassadors on the snare and bass, he could be using something else though
I am not a big Mapex fan but the Saturn series is a really nice set of drums. Saturns are their top of the line kit. i like the way nothing but the lugs touches the shell and the wood combo is nice. i own a Tama Hyperdrive superstar set, the basswood shells on that particular Tama series are disappointing, but after changing the heads i have found a sound i can live with but if i had a choice of the two i would definitely take the Saturns.
Hey Mapex users question from a inquiring drummer. Does anyone know if Mapex Saturn toms will fit on Sonor tom arms? Are they compatible? The reason I ask is because I like that the Sonor tom arms can move back and fourth where the Mapex arms are just fixed. Pretty specific question I know but Im looking to moutn whatever kit i go with on a Pearl Icon rack and I'd rather everything be perfect before dropping my wad
@mutantthrash I'll have to take your word for that because it only looks like one to me but either way what he used it for would have sound much better on a cymbal that had a little bit of life to it like a nice china
Mapex is one of those brands where you don't pay 300 bucks just for the name. I just got mine today, Meridian Maple 5-piece with 2 toms (8x7, 16x16) in the works and it cost be less than the TAMA Birch SL 7-piece kit thatI had on backorder. I slapped some Vintage Emperors on the toms and it's unlike anything I've ever heard.
@SnakNask he's been doing that fill for 30 years. i got the transcription in MD when I was a kid back in '85. it's been in my toolbox since then. love gregg!
Tama bubinga's are nice and sound just as good as the Saturns except the bubinga's are $500-$700 more, and the sound is nowhere near that much better than the Saturn so these are the best drums for the money IMO.
The Bubinga's are about $1000 more, if you want the Bubingas, the the Birch mix. Yes i agree with you, completely sick drums... Best drums in my opinion for the money too...
Hi, i guess im abit late. But i heard your question - Should i choose Mapex Saturns or Starclassic bb. Im not sure about which ones i will choose, but for now this seems very interessting. The Maple and Walnut is best sounding of what i've heard out of Youtube vids and so on. :) Not sure yet but this is as i said very interessting. :) Together with a black panther snare this will be godly! :)
You can tell just by the way that he talks that he's reading off a prompter, or at the very least, from a memorized script. But that's besides the point.
Awesome sound! When you can get a set for under $1500, it's a gift!
I bought the Black Panther Brass Master 13" snare. It has solid brass lugs, solid brass shell, solid brass cast hoops and it refuses to tarnish! it sounds awesome.
I discovered the Mapex maple sound 5 years ago. I bought the Saturn Pro series with the wax finish. WOW! the best maple sound I have ever heard! the tom mounts are the most durable out there too.
GB...one of the best pairs of hands in the business.

Does anyone know if these are the way they sound in real life, or if they sound this good because of the micing?
cannibalcorpse135 9 months ago
@cannibalcorpse135 Well unless he was 'cheating' then they should sound close to this. Depending on how you tune them.
MikeDrumsForFun 9 months ago
@cannibalcorpse135 -if you tune them the same and are in a studio, yeah. but it depends on your location, micing , tuneing .......

@Yustax just try spending a good chunk of time re tuneing your set . cuzz i have played tama starclassics (b/b and maple) and there great tuned well
