In the video he only seems to reference the two incidents of when planes actually flew through ash when describing what happens to the engines. Why haven't they actually gathered some of this ash and deliberately sprayed it into an engine in order to test and study what happens.
The problem isn't that they don't understand it. They understand exactly what the effects of flying through volcanic ash will be. The problem is that you can't really design a jet engine to handle it without substantially sacrificing power-to-weight ratios, if it can handle it at all. There are simply some things that are not feasible engineering wise.
@DeltaPhi79 In general, if you're talking about a matter of engineering, and you think you have thought up a simple solution that thousands of very smart engineers haven't used, you're wrong.
Exactly why, I can't say for certain, but I imagine a "giant dust filter" would also slow down the velocity of air flowing through, thus making the engine not work. Also, what do you expect to happen when that filter gets clogged with dust, as would quickly happen when dealing with volcanic ash?
There's no solution right now to this, at least that uses technology that actually exists... So, if you want to help, invent a colder engine with the same or greater power-to-weight ratio (and make it cheap enough to be practical), which would solve this problem.
@trombone7 The glass coating on the turbines broke off when they reached colder air, thus freeing the combustion chamber enough to restart the engine.
So what? The bottom line is that the BA and the KLM flight flew right into the ash cloud and understandably suffered damage. The ash cloud over Europe was much more diffuse and gave no reason to suspend flights.
@lopzilla No but trained as a chemist and trained to think and analyse rigourously. All I was saying was by the time the ash cloud reached Europe it was far more diffuse than in the BA and KLM incidents. And what do we find now? The ash levels were 20 times lower than that deemed unsafe to fly in.
Iceland's banks refused to give our money back, I know the clouds are an act of god, but I think the UK should sue Iceland and claim compensation and get our money back that way.
@robertwc82 maybe in a new car, but not in anything '05 or older. I recall seeing a Mythbusters episode where they did that and the car was still running.
@RollingStone000 huh, really? thats interesting. but my question was is that the effect its supposed to have (ugar in a tank) to block of the air intake, or does it cause damage elsewhere (you know, if it was to effect it at all)
They covered this in an episode Aircraft Investigation when a plane shutdown after fying through ash. All engines failed, however, the pilots managed to descend and restart the engines. When they flew through it everything lit up and flames were shooting from the black of the engines just like this guy mentions in the video. I don't think a plane has ever crashed because of this problem, but it's the risk of not being able to restart the engines once they fail.
DOD said today that it caused damage in their own test flight, and then today also BA say their test flight had no problem So the ban is lifted just like that Putting money before human life
Well Basically, all we need to get rid of the ash is a Big gust of wind to send it upwards, so the sky Can be clear so the Poilets can get to there Destination! and people can get back to where there where!.
I thought if the engine failed when it is diving down towards the ground, the ash gets pushed out by the force of the air allowing the engines to restart????
The airlines are complaining like mad at the moment because of the money they are losing. I know these companies need to operate their planes to stay in business but it only needs one of them to come down as a result of flying into thicker ash cloud and it will be the families left behind that suffer most. They need to send the stranded home via ships or trains and keep non emergency flights on the ground.
@energy27uk But the thing is, they would lose even more money replacing a plane, which would cost millions to buy. And the compensation paid to families. It's natural, and there's nothing that can be done about it!
@sixtysymbols it sounded more like a a hot gas compressor than a chair to me ! great to see an intelligent(if flatulent!) man contextualize this -some photos of glass encrusted fins would have been good
"all you can do to keep out of the gas cloud is cut down on the broccolli and onion omelettes"
Hmm... It's funny how on the news that the airlines that are losing money are sending up test flights and saying the planes are perfectly fine are juxtaposed by the Met-office, who are not losing money, are sending planes up and they came back with engine damage.
@oneratcardiff lol. the dust does fuck the engines up, and it might be unlikely to bring a plane down, but they cant risk it. The planes cost too much hahahah LMFAO.
this year i'm going to vote for the 'Icelandic volcano party"...they have done more for immigration in 5 days than the british government has down in 10 years!!!!....can i get a HELL YEEAAHH!????
gas turbine engines will make the ash form into a crystal style glass form that will cause the engines to fail and flameout and as the aircraft decreases in altitude the force of the air rushing through the engine will force the "glass" to slowly break up and will allow the engine to start up again but with quite a large amount of damage to the engine.engines will only start if the entire engine is running to a certain speed to much or to little will not allow the engines to re ignite
Well said , and i think walsh of british airways needs a boot in the balls for suggesting its safe, considering it was a BA flight this happend to . One thing thats clear BA have no problem of sacraficing passenger safety for profit . and its a well known fact that profit far outways safety in the airline business
Hey I've just had a thought! The airlines are saying it's safe to fly after doing some test flights. Well....what if you drink and drive and manage to get yourself home without incident. Does that mean we can all drink and drive now then if the airlines are allowed fly after putting pressure on?
Obviously it has nothing to do with Profit does it?
Does anybody know why the planes couldn't fly slightly lower just to avoid the ash? I know it would increase fuel consumption etc. but otherwise I can't see a problem.
I live in northern ireland right on the north coast and we can see a little ash in the sky (its a very thin light brown cloud) and their is ash on our cars
I don't doubt that volcanic ash can stop a jet engine, but what most people seems to ignore is the fact that the BA-flight in -82 was flying about 30 km from the volcano.
Europe is more than 1000 km away from the volcano. The ash cloud has been diluted substantially by the time it reaches our shores, and I don't think it poses any threat. KLM, Lufthansa and Air France have been test-flying with no ill effect.
My opinion; closing the airspace is paranoid overkill.
@royeb63 If you look at the pictures (e.g. at 1:57) you can see the ash over the uk and in fact it seems heavier over us than over the sea. It's only just after it blows past us that it starts to disperse.
@royeb63 Oh, and, think about how many planes fly in and out of the uk every day. Now, maybe only 1 in 100 planes would be affected by the ash, but that still adds up to a LOT of planes would.
perhaps the engines restarted at lower altitude because of higher oxygen partial pressure (helps with ignition) and higher air density (better compression ratio). Just a thought.
fascinating, I assumed you just couldn't burn the stuff in the clouds and it starved the engine. I never would have imagined that would be the better alternative, since you'd just sandblast the turbines until you dropped out of the cloud.
I would be interested to know if there has been an unusual rise in temperature due to the lack of high altitude pollutants, con. trails, etc from the jet exhaust similar to what has been hypothesized after 11-9-2001 in America when all their aircraft were grounded. Of course the ash itself may also have effect on temperatures, but there must be reduced air traffic around the world as thousands of plains are grounded in northern Europe.
Just wait for katla which is 100 times powerful then eyjafjallajökull which is erupting now. katla's ash will probably go all over the globe. Katla will probably erupt after eyjafjallajökull.

fascinating, I assumed you just couldn't burn the stuff in the clouds and it starved the engine. I never would have imagined that would be the better alternative, since you'd just sandblast the turbines until you dropped out of the cloud.

The other issue is silica (the glass). It can tear them up, and restarting would be out of the question.

I would be interested to know if there has been an unusual rise in temperature due to the lack of high altitude pollutants, con. trails, etc from the jet exhaust similar to what has been hypothesized after 11-9-2001 in America when all their aircraft were grounded. Of course the ash itself may also have effect on temperatures, but there must be reduced air traffic around the world as thousands of plains are grounded in northern Europe.

you've got to love how Mother Earth can always confound Human endeavour.

Just wait for katla which is 100 times powerful then eyjafjallajökull which is erupting now. katla's ash will probably go all over the globe. Katla will probably erupt after eyjafjallajökull.

we should invent extradimensional planes that fly in another dimension then the ash (lol)
