I don't support capital punishment for a single murder, nor do I support it for killing someone under the color of authority, but I do support it when the victim is tortured before death. The way that the deputy was systematically killed as described in the comments is torture and has earned this criminal his day before the executioner.
My heart goes out to this officer's family even to this day and time. I currently work at a Sheriff's office near this one and My sheriff was his partner at the time and he still has trouble with this. My deepest condolences to his family and the Laurens County Sheriff's office.
brutal. the poor officer was likely killed by his own training. he had been taught that distance was his friend and that changed when a rifle was introduced into the mix. had he followed the man back to his truck he almost certainly would have been able to thwart his attempt to clear the truck with his muzzle, turn, and begin firing. military training is simple, supress and advance. god be with the officers family.

What many of you may not realize is this Officer's hesitation may very well have been due in part to the fact that he just came off suspension. Apparently people made complaints that he made car stops with his gun unholstered (which is permissible in my department). I wish he had the foresight to know what would happen as a result of his hesitation.
I watched this at work with my friends. What a horrible way for a young guy to die...all alone like that. If I could offer one criticism for the poor dead man, his fatal mistake was not protecting his person when that psychopath lunged at him. He should have popped the guy in the stomach right there.

It's sad this event couldn't be repeated to give the officer another chance. If I were in his shoes, that man would have had a whole magazine pumped into him after he pulled the gun from the truck. It seems to me he was letting his duty get in the way of protecting himself. When someone has a gun aimed at you, you should shoot back to protect your own life, not to uphold the law.
The Officer should have fired on him after he told him to drop the weapon. He was close enough for a head shot. The Officer gave him more than enough time to stop. It is a damned shame he had to die.
I know he was a trained cop but it was never a wise idea to get into a shootout with a vietnam vet. He may have been crazy, but I am guessing he has 100x more experience at close hand combat than the cop.

This was really tough to watch the first time. After watching the video more and more, I became more frustrated than anything. Too much time was wasted here, the veteran should have never been able to even turn the gun towards Dinkheller. An extremely difficult situation for ANY officer to encounter, my thoughts go out with the Dinkheller family.

Holy shit. When the officer tells the suspect to stop firing the suspect does stop firing and returns near his truck. The officer tries to take a shot at the suspect and the suspect rushes him with a successful take down. The officer would probably still be alive if hadn't continued to fire his weapon.
I've suspected the same thing. Then again, it's possible Brannan (the offender) was returning to the truck to reload (he may have been out of ammo--I'm not sure).
One thing that stands out to me is that Dinkheller never ordered Brannan to put his hands in the air. Not once--unless I just didn't hear it. He just kept telling him to "get back now," or something similar. I have to question his training.
Either way, he showed too much restraint. It's a shame.
The officer showed an incredible amount of restraint. I can't help but wonder if the same level of hesitation would've been used if the suspect was black. Regardless, my sympathies go to his family.

As for myself, I have mixed feelings about having a video like this on YouTube. Yes, it may cause Dinkheller's family more pain. On the other hand, it obviously serves as a reminder to those who are too quick to judge a police officer's actions, particularly regarding use of force. This incident shows the dangers of hesitation and too much restraint.
Anytime a suspect goes back to a car when you ask them to stay put nothing good can come from that! This deputy was reprimanded by his department before this incident about being courteous to citizens.... One sir would've been enough for me... the deputy kept saying,"Sir, Sir...step back" over and over... So sad to lose a fine person to a POS like that... Vet or no vet!

This officer was 22 years old. He was most likely barely off of probation and may have been his first felony stop on his own. You can hear the fear in his voice throughout the entire situation.

The Officer should have fired on him after he told him to drop the weapon. He was close enough for a head shot. The Officer gave him more than enough time to stop. It is a damned shame he had to die.

This was really tough to watch the first time. After watching the video more and more, I became more frustrated than anything. Too much time was wasted here, the veteran should have never been able to even turn the gun towards Dinkheller. An extremely difficult situation for ANY officer to encounter, my thoughts go out with the Dinkheller family.

Holy shit. When the officer tells the suspect to stop firing the suspect does stop firing and returns near his truck. The officer tries to take a shot at the suspect and the suspect rushes him with a successful take down. The officer would probably still be alive if hadn't continued to fire his weapon.

I've suspected the same thing. Then again, it's possible Brannan (the offender) was returning to the truck to reload (he may have been out of ammo--I'm not sure).
One thing that stands out to me is that Dinkheller never ordered Brannan to put his hands in the air. Not once--unless I just didn't hear it. He just kept telling him to "get back now," or something similar. I have to question his training.
Either way, he showed too much restraint. It's a shame.

It is easy to tell, as well as know from the officer's perspective, that the guy was crazy. It is obvious he did not want to kill the man. you are referring to a bike chase that happened in DALLAS on Saturday but is on the Austin news, and it was TWO (2) officers involved, not 22....22 total officers were interviewed--that would include ones in the chase, on the original scene, and showed up at the conclusion, not all cops are bad, just the ones that screwup and get on tv or obviously...have to deal with you

But the fact this guy took so long to start shooting says to me he probably wasn't one of those types of cops. Long stretch of road, middle of nowhere, control over the dash cam...any other cop could have easily tased the shit out of this guy for interrupting doughnut break.

Anytime a suspect goes back to a car when you ask them to stay put nothing good can come from that! This deputy was reprimanded by his department before this incident about being courteous to citizens.... One sir would've been enough for me... the deputy kept saying,"Sir, Sir...step back" over and over... So sad to lose a fine person to a POS like that... Vet or no vet!

@kevileya why in gods name would you want a 44 magnum. cops need accuracy in these situation. Most police officers use 9mm or .45 caliber.
This officer was 22 years old. He was most likely barely off of probation and may have been his first felony stop on his own. You can hear the fear in his voice throughout the entire situation.
While i am saddened by the officer's death i am more disheartened by poor training. I am glad they use this for training other officers.
