  • A modern troubadour

  • THE LIMEY

  • bellissima poesia dei tempi andati......

  • True legend!

  • Donovan Leitch's best song

  • This song was in an English movie called "Poor Cow" back in the 1960s. Good flick if you can find it.

  • I LOVE HIM!

  • the bass layer is david bowie

  • no habia llorado al escuchar una cancion por primera vez desde que escuche i´ll follow the sun de the beatles!!!

  • Anyone attempting to maintain any contextual connection between Donovan Leitch and Bob Dylan must go through Woody Guthrie. Neither Dylan nor Donovan existed in a vacuum, and presuming that one copied the other when they have both specifically named Woody Guthrie as a prime influence to both them just brandishes one's ignorance of either respective artist (especially in the comments section of a song that sounds like a Woody Guthrie number sung by a Scotsman).

  • Does anyone have a picture of Donovan fully standing, like head to feet? I cant find one.

  • @Beatleluver1234567 you can't find one because Donovan never stood that much , he had polio as a child .

  • @Beatleluver1234567 - He's standing in this video.

  • Dylan's comments re: Donovan in "Dont Look Back" were extremely sarcastic and condescending. It's obvoius Dylan didn't think much of him. Like Donovan if you want, but please don't pretend he even begins to approach Dylan.

  • @unputer What the hell, man? Fuck all that this and that crap and just enjoy the music. It is an emotional thing, not a brain thing, after all. I mean if Dylan was condescending and sarcastic towards Donovan, that speaks ill of Dylan, who is apparently your hero. I listened to Dylan way before he was popular. I am 62 and listened to it all, including Donovan. Apples and Oranges, my man.

  • @slkaiser69

Dylan surpasses Donovan by far. but Donovan is a definite artist, the comment he made about donovan was simple kindness. and there was a bit of a double entendre to it as well.

  • Parecen colores acptados en el siglo XXI, sólo que depende del brillo a conveniencia del ojo observador que fiscaliza con interés

  • Donovan fans should check out a young scottish Folk singer called Gordon Wiseman...very influenced by Donovan.

Particulary check out his song Tuesday's Child.

  • The unkown bass player is ex Shadow Brian LOcking who produced records for Donovan.

  • The Bass Player is Brian Locking from The Shadows. After leaving The Shadows he produced records with Donovan. The Shadows jacket that he is wearing is a bit of a giveaway.

  • That looks and sounds just like my old '56 Gibson. Check out my channel, there's a short clip of me playing it.

  • The fact that we are talking about this song 35 yrs later says something....dont u think?? Yep, that what i thought...just enjoy it....

  • happy birthday donavan 65 today !!

  • @wishOnEverything

So -You exist on a different plane? Your opinion is the only one that counts, right? Quite right, slim...

  • Sing and just keep making people happy. A.

  • Mellow yellow

  • Thank You

  • awesome!!!!!!!!!

  • Donovan could play guitar. Dylan?

  • @equipow Dylan wrote bad ass melodies.

unstoppable melodies>>>>>>guitar ability. Though Dylans defense its alright ma Im only bleeding is no easy song to play imo

  • Pure , simple and very unique. A very gifted songwriter who doesn't pretend to be anything like Dylan, but to be himself. I truely love this song . Those really were some of the best of times. Some memories will never fade into obscurity. Thank God.

  • @strato22cc Unless you get alzheimer's

  • hmmmm,,,i love this song,,

  • The Rules of Attraction, best.. soundtrack...ever

  • No he's not a Dylan wannabe. He does know Dylan however, and when Dylan toured England back in the early/mid 60's Donovan taught Mr. Bob some licks. Donovan is a fantastic guitar player, though his ability doesn't always come through in the songs he recorded.

  • Tenha santa paciencia!!! Como alguem pode ter a cara de pau de promover uma bosta de video de um tal de Luan Santana e uma tal de Ivete sei lá das quantas...??? Esse espaço é para quem gosta de musica caraio. Eu disse M.U.S.I.C.A!!!!!

  • I LOVE YOU DONOVAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He was a great talent like Dylan and far from a want to be...he was golden

  • He is his own man, just because he happened to be a folk singer in the 60's doesn't mean he was a wannabe-Dylan. You people are so full of shit.

  • Comment removed

  • lmao...Donovan is sooo much better than Dylan

  • All this talk about who copied who... Donovan created and creates all kinds of music, folk from all around the world, psychadelic rock, children songs, he didn't copy anyone. He created music from his soul. His guitarstyle and alot of his folks song are influensed by Woody Guthrie, just like Dylan are. And like @SecretWizardSociety said, enjoy the music, 'cause Donovan has something not alot of musicians have in their music and that's true love, peace and hope.

  • ok this version is good but seriously, where the FUCK is the studio version.. not the four minute slow one. I can see the link in the suggestions but there's some copyright infringement bullshit.

  • this type of music was being created in scotland and ireland before woody guthrie and bob dylan were alive...

they are all 'copying' traditional irish/ scotish folk music

  • I think Donavan idolized Dylan when he was starting out, but I'm not sure he ever tried to be 'another Dylan.' What happened was that the British media tried to make him into 'our Bob Dylan,' and Donovan took a lot of heat for thinking he could ever be 'that good.'

Meanwhile, a lot of people were needlessly hard on him and lost sight of the really lovely music he made ... music that was really not very much like Dylan's at all.

  • @9999norton what a load of shit you talk ! Donovan has 2 major differences from Dylan , Donovan CAN play the guitar and CAN sing. zimmerman is a poet more than anything else, he writes excellent songs too , listen to "Love is just a 4 letter "when Joan Baez sings it Not when Dylan tries to sing it.

  • @tazio2 Come on man Donovan is Great...but Bob Dylan is a God among men...

  • better singer then dylan

  • For Jim- feel better soon! I love you very much!

  • Donovan is one of the best. A class act and a joy. Thanks BeatnickManfred

  • Donovan! there is no other!

  • Who is the unknown bass player? ? ?

  • Its just a great song, sung by a great artist, enjoy it.

  • how the fuck could you think that Donovan's song are similar to Dylan's? they're both great and absolutely different.

  • fuck Dylan, he's a total phony. Donovan's the real deal.

  • @rix66 how is Dylan a phony? (not knocking Donovan , i like him a lot, just interested in why someone whould call Bob Dylan that)

  • Eine sehr gute Aufnamhe von Donovan= Donovan is a simple the best of the 60er.

    verry good,verry good!!

  • this is a very beautiful song love it 2...there are few donovan songs that are diff than this and catch the wind but i like this ones and as i grew up with this kinda songs i think they are part of me

  • Chances are that as a 16 year old in 1962 Donovan heard Bob's music and discovered Guthrie as a result. I doubt he was influenced by Guthrie without having been influenced by Dylan first -teenagers in Britain at that time didn't have Guthrie records, even in America they were rare! He's a nice singer in his own right - just lacking the gravitas, complexity and grit that made early Bob so captivating. Donovan is more gentle flower power stuff, suitable for a picnic by a river on a summers day.

  • @jovialduke NO! Dont let your fantasies get in front of reality. Donovan said he was influenced by Woody not Bob as your fantasy dictates. Donovan was better anyway. Oh and in case you think im a Dylan hater i loved him also. Tangled Up In Blue will always be one of my favorite songs.

  • hallo i m looking for a tittle of Dononan song begining with (hollywood is just a dream and when you re only seventeen it s wonderful) Thank you

  • @coucherdesoleil31 'ollo 'ollo check out -Amanda Lear - Hollywood Is just a dream when you´re seventeen. Not Donovan, but nice

  • @coucherdesoleil31 'ollo 'ollo check out -Amanda Lear - Hollywood Is just a dream when you´re seventeen. Not Donovan, but nice

  • great close ups of a great muscian.. young talent - nice

  • Love this performance of this wonderful song!!!! Yah, Donovan!!!!! :)

  • Donovan has a lot of traces of Woody Gutherie in his voice.

  • great song, great artist

....with unfortunate and not necessary screaming

  • Bonjour, vous aimez les sixties ? écoutez et podcastez mon émission "le super son des 60's" sur le site de plumfm. You like the 60's ? please, listen and podcast my broadcast "le super son des 60's", connect to "plumfm". Salut et faites gaffe au rock and roll.

  • Walkin down a road

Rolling a plant with a tree

    Goin to a place

  • : )

  • Either way both great artist in their own right

  • Dylan Once said, "If I was 5 years younger, Donovan would have been my influence"

  • @Cimiar

I dont think he said that, Where did you get that quote?

  • @Rush1013 Watch the movie, "No Direction Home." Dylan says it. HAPPY NOW YOU FUCKING DICKSUCKER?

  • @7drift0king2

Wow sorry man no need to be an ass hole. Donovans one of my favorites and i believe hes better then Dylan, which is why i searched that quote and i couldnt find anything. Take a chill pill.

  • @Rush1013 better than Dylan? Pfft!! Man, I love Donovan with all my heart, but Donovan is doesn't come close to Dylan's musical talent.

  • @7drift0king2

Thats what everyone says, but Donovan is severely underrated. In my opinion his lyrics and music are more profound well written then Dylans. Im not saying that Dylan is overrated, but Donovan never got the respect he deserved, especially after the 60's. He an amazing guitarist, Paul McCartney and John Lennon were obviously very impressed by it, just listen to The White Album. Some amazing Beatles songs wouldn't be here without Donovan. Not to mention his voice is incredible.

  • @Rush1013 Yeah, you are right. Donovan deserves WAY more recognition. I'm surprised he didn't since he was good friends with the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc.

  • @Rush1013 Not just that, but actually Sunshine Superman was due to be released way before any of the other psychedelic albums that defined the era - but due to the drug bust it was postponed and unfortunately it proceeded Sgt Pepper and it looked like he hitched on to the whole thing when really he was there before A LOT of them

  • @VoodooChileJ11 Comparing anything Donovan did to Sgt Pepper is ridiculous. He's a total amateur in comparison and remained so throughout his career. I like Donovan, but his music writing ability pales in comparison, even if his lyrics were thought provoking.

  • @Rush1013 they're all contemporaries of one another. He didn't precede them in thought or action, he merely reacted to the same influences they had. Everybody was influenced by everybody else, but let's not get all carried away stating influences on entire albums. I don't think McCarntey or Lennon needed Donovan to influence them. They had plenty of their own ideas.

  • @7drift0king2

You're so narrow-minded. I'm glad you don't speak for all listeners.

  • I hear colors and see music.

  • Bright song. Very good!

  • Peru love Donovan

  • my friend dan sang this song and he did it so beautiful i had to come find this video to keep as a reminder...beings he always takes his videos down later....loved his rendition as much as i love this...sending this to a nother friend too, so he gets to hear the one we were discussing.............this is such a beautiful song!!

  • and am I really blathering? how many styles did donovan try out? bet he sounded like the beach boys too!

my bitch is not against donovan, my bitch is he made the rnrholf! brit brit in a few years will make it (sigh), but super artists(?) like donovan paved the way.

  • @superblather - What?

  • @superblather Donovan had his own sound and unique vision. He wasn't trying to be Dylan or Guthrie although he may have been influenced by them (and many other musicians were). He wrote some truly stunningly beautiful songs that can never be duplicated which showcase his vocal talents and unique world view...

  • who cares? this is a pop singer tryin whatever to be popular! I compare him to brit brit! I do not fault him for that, he is only tryin to make money. but donovan and creativity is like ice and the middle east! rnr hall of fame? no way!

  • @superblather ---looks like you're blathering away .

  • green is the color of the mepal shit..

  • Such an incredilbe song!!! Donovan is one who sounds just as great live as he does on record!!! Thanks for posting this!!!

  • been listenin to both Donovan and Dylan for years, this is the first time I've ever read their names in the same sentence, get a grip foaks, totally different styles and sounds...

  • @waydownthebayou You said it!

  • I like Donovan, I like Dylan... they were both inspired by Woodie Guthrie. No doubt about it. And who cares who influenced who, just enjoy the music man.

    Cheers,

    Dean

  • @cuntmonkey007

Well said..I remember as a kid, that many people thought he was trying to be a Dylan wannbe..and giving him grief..I'm like you I like both even though I lean toward Donovan more..but they are both great..so just enjoy..Well said, Dean..and cheers to you my man..

  • ILLUSTREZ VOTRE LECTURE AVEC DES VIDEOS

vidéo d’une chanson citée dans le livre "Il était une fois les Poppys", PAGE 30.

  • see: Os velhos da montanha

  • to Kablamvideos: How do Dylan and Donovan sound alike at all? I can't imagine more dissimilar voices! Dylan's nasal twang from the upper midwest of the states sounds absolutely nothing like Donovan's clearly "British" accent.

  • bob dylan and donovan sound so damn similar. if i took i blind test there was no way i could guess which one was which. i do think that donovan probobly ripped of bob dylan's singing.

  • @Kablamvideos They don't sound similar at all. Spend some more time listening to each of them and you'll get it. Their music genre may be similar but not the end result.

  • priceless footage of a star :)

  • He is NOT a Dyan wannabe. When Dylan went country/rock, Donovan went psychedelic.

  • @ame624 : yeah that's the story of Donovan's life : he always did the same things than dylan, but each time a few years later (what about his dead ?). He's just like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland : always too late. But I love him (specially this song).

  • @ame624 and besides... with Donovan, you can actually understand what he's saying..... can't say that about Dylan! lol

  • I dont think the lyrics are that fucking great .. but i like the song

  • bonaroooooo and dylan :)

  • see: Os velhos da montanha

  • bonaroooooo and dylan :)

  • no need to compare

    LISTEN and TASTE

just enter in his world and make yours better

  • HEY PEOPLE DYLAN IS AWESOME but so is DONAVAN BOTH so TALENTED so schhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • The Donovan/Dylan argument is pointless if you look only two years later. These two great artists took divergent paths as if they became different branches of the same tree. In fact, Donovans "Sunshine Superman" album is a massively complex piece of work from start to finish. The first line of the first song is "sunshine came softly through my window today", and the first line of the last verse of the last song is "Dawn crept in unseen to find me still awake". Beautiful material is inside.

  • bãiii o donovan apavorava....saca os gritos da mulherada

  • I would have to agree with you, dukew, on that observation. But, it is easy to confuse the two, at least in the early stages in their careers. But, this short clip here would lead many to assume that Donovan was a 'copy cat.' Nothing could be further from the truth. They both come from different traditions. And Donovan, Dogsville08, was not in the same USA folk circles doing Newport and the like, either..... if my memory serves me well. Ha!

  • awesome from my home city back home GLASGOW SCOTLAND

  • Dylan asks questions and gets no answers, Donovan does not ask questions and expects no answers.

  • @polmaccaba

Dylan, the Jew, tried to demoralize........Donovan, the Scotsman, tried to inspire.

  • @CharlesLindberghLive @CharlesLindberghLive

That might be one of the more intolerant things I've had the displeasure of reading lately.

Good job on being a fucking bigot on the internet...it really spreads your message, and that's pretty shitty. I'd like to think I exist in a time were I don't have to be subjected to opinions like yours as the 1940s were such a long time ago. People like you only hold humanity back. Good job on being the lowest common denominator. Thank god I'm not you.

  • @WishOnEverything Thank you for the compliment. Your dreamy, egalitarian utopia cannot exist. Here's some proof: theoccidentalobserver (dot) net

  • I sat with 'Don' some years ago, talking about a party he was at - with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Jack Cassidy. He's such a gentle soul

  • That's COLOURS, not 'COLORS'

  • @beatlesandbeyond heheh yep

  • Bring Donovan to Olympia! We'd love to have him sing here.

  • enjoy the music or just click exit, no one is forcing you to listen or watch, so no one is forcing you to stay and make retarded comments. you do that all by yourself.

  • @denniswilsonfan

One can enjoy the music, NOT exit, and make comments. You may think they are 'retarded' comments, others may enjoy them and even agree. You suck all by yourself.

  • Wow ...he wasn't copying Dylan in any way. just happened to be around at same time ...perhaps maybe just lost the competition on "amount of psychedelics ingested" competition...Dylan just got more political and angry due to west-cultured politics and indulgence of the good stuff ...and of course shitty arse times from the 60's ...

  • Have this exact harmonica. Got it at Oregon Country Fair about 20 years ago ...it's this exact one that he's playing here ...the one this beast is putting his mouth on ...fickin weird...

  • @lumpeater ...and freakin awesome. The harp rules! It's music appreciators like you that keep the history of otherwise forgotten artists alive! Let's not forget the roots~

  • "There is always one shithead that has to bring a Black face. You may praise your Idiot Obama but keep the shit to your self dukevw."

  • hes not trying to be bob dylan listen to the song there is no mountain

  • Adoroooo...

  • Great footage and Donovan song,so many great feelings for me to his songs.

  • Dylan political, Donovan love/peace>>simple...

  • still renting that house in Blackrock??

  • i agree, if not for the brilliance of Dylan, Donovan could have been that icon from the late 60's< was interesting to see them interact on that documentary they did on Dylan a few years back. As an aside, your man rented a house in Ireland beside me...interesting house....plenty of smokes...if u know what i mean.

  • dont he look like the wicked child catcher on the film chitty chitty bang bang!!!!

  • o no he is handsome!!

  • Who cares if he is a wannabe. I don't think he is, but that is the whole attitude that has ruined music and gotten it into its current state. You expect these people to be perfect, and they are'nt, they are just people.

Enjoy the music instead of trying to justify your fanship of another artist, by degrading another artist.

Honestly, regardless, the music is beautifull and he puts forth very visible passion. All that matters to me.

  • @SecretWizardSociety Donovan can actually sing ... Dylan just brays.

  • Comment removed

  • @SecretWizardSociety I agree completely.

  • i like the joan baez version better but this is still good

  • Comment removed

  • yeah im getting a more new sounding woody guthrie. Bob Dylans hero.

  • Donovan is amazing, whoever who starts listening to him will know.

By the way, the unofficial site is superb. Google "donovan unofficial"

  • Superbe chanson!

  • So young mega

  • I don't get why the whole "inspired by Dylan" topic is still going. You both say "maybe" alot, maybe you should just not make assumptions and talk about something relevant.

  • Mutch closer to Woody than anyone else.

  • heis face kinda looks like a white charlie parker.

  • A music critic once made the observation that Donovan was not copying Dylan. Rather, both were writing and singing in the style of their major influence and idol, Woodie Guthrie.

  • @dukevw excellent reply!

  • @dukevw He was writing in the "style" of his countrymen(women).... the Scottish , where Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan got their "style".

  • This was the American program "Shindig". The bass player is Larry Knechtel, a brilliant musician who played piano, bass and harmonica on so many great hit records. He is best known for his piano work on "Bridge Over Troubled Water". He also won a Grammy award for the arrangement.

    R.I.P. Larry.

  • his best song....

  • it's all good.

  • Google "Donovan Unofficial"

    What a great site!

  • Umm when was the last time Donovan produced a song, hit, or ...anything? No comparison.

  • Dylan... Irish troubadour ?

    Bollicks!

The only time I ever met him was in a curry house on Kensington High Street ( 72-ish ), He was, bright witty and charming... and he had a Lady on his arm that most blokes would have killed for.

Dylan? stop it... that shite began when a British journalist ( and not a very good one ) told Dylan that the Glasgow lad was a better guitarist than he was. Someone couldn't handle it and started a slagging contest.

  • Comment removed

  • Donovan , Dylan, 2 seperate individuals , why all of this copying shit , just listen to both and enjoy

  • even if he was coping dylan, who better to copy?

  • He is NOT a Dyan wannebe.

take it from a Dylan fan, someone who has been a Dylan fan for 41 yrs.

  • his called catch the wind is very much like freedom flashing-bob dylan, as a dylan fan speaking as well

  • But certainly the starting point was Dylan. Donovan certainly charted his own path in subsequent years, but to deny the Dylan influence is just being disingenuous.

  • @Johnny6666 Considering Donovan writing his folk music in his teens, when Dylan wasnt even famous i doubt he was that influenced by him. He was influenced by the same people as Dylan, hence why the musics similar.

  • No, I do think Donovan was unashamedly influenced by Dylan. He's been open about it, and there's nothing wrong with it. Certainly, his managers packaged him as Britain's answer to Dylan (when, in all honesty, early Bert Jansch came close to filling that role).

Nothing wrong with being influenced. The important point is to then go on and find your own unique voice, which Donovan certainly did in subsequent years.
