As to who is better....well..... subjective of course, but also depends on the medium. For this type of Blues, I think Lang's feel is better....Phil is almost too legato (smooth) and refined. Not dirty enough. But I'll take Keaggy on acoustic and doing pop or jazz any day.
I love how the bass player just decides he's gonna end the song prematurely while Phil is still doin a little run and lang looks back at him like "what the bell are you doin?" And then laughs
its like these guys didnt even know who phil keaggy was! they dont let him go until the very end, and then he proves he's the SHIT! man that guy is versed. jonny's great too tho, dont get me wrong.
Johnny freaking does look a little intimidated by Phil, he seems to do simple licks and phils just owns. Johnny is good as fuck tho I guess he'd do better under a little less pressure
i think jonny is a little intimidated by one of the best, good ol phil from youngstown, ohio. if u dont know of him look him up on youtube or billboards top 100 guitarists of all time i believe he is in the top 5, like up there with clapton and hendrix
Jonny was opening for BB King when he was 16. I dont think he was intimidated ..but I think he knows excellence when he hears it...but then Jonny is excellent also...they just have different styles
does anybody know where to find Phil Keaggy's guitar solo and vocals for a Christian song he did in the 70's simply called Hallelujah?
it is hypnotic the guitar, the layering. I've talked about his guitar playing for years and most people were snobby about it, but now, you all know, Keaggy, he rocks! with any music. anybody know where to find that particular song. loved the guitar so music on it. Hey Phil, if you still have a copy of it, please send it to me. mine was lost a long time ago.
These guys are all awesome musicians, but I think they just didn't make this song work at all. Maybe it sounded better live, but this just doesn't have the punch or drive of the original. The pieces are there, but they don't add up.
@paxpaul I think perhaps your disappointment stems from hearing the show recorded on a mediocre, off-the-shelf camcorder by someone standing in the audience.
Also, the arrangement of the original was a freight train in full steam, while this is more like a black Camaro sneaking into town with no lights on. It's going for something different. And I think it works.
salm37... really, why would you be impressed by a kid in his mid 20's absolutely killing it vocally, musically and with amazing stage presence. He is only sharing a stage with 2 incredibley talented and seasoned musicians like Keaggy and Sims?
You must really know your stuff man...please share with us who you are impressed with- oh Guru of music!
It must have made Jonny's day to jam with Phil Keaggy. Phil has some of the coolest licks I have ever heard, and like BB, he has a very contageous inner joy that defies description.
The ability of great muscicians to create waves of energy and "feels" within a tune is amazing...effortless, and I'm quite certain this group had never even thought of rehearsing together before! You have to appreciate the muscicianship on that stage!
I agree with the restraint, subtlety, "letting the song breathe" approach. Let the tension build...I like it just the way they did it. Jonny's squaky Les Paul and Phil's seamless runs sounded great to me.
I thought this Video was ok. however saying that Jonny Lang is one of the greatest guitarist is pushing it. Now I would love to see Joe Bonamassa and Phil Keaggy. As Phil Keaggy is my all time Favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joe Bonamassa and Jonny Lang are about in the same playing field...But Phil Keaggy can just do everything. So I'd say Get Phil Keaggy out with Andy Timmons, see the contrast of those two styles but the amazing technical abilities of both would just burn the house down.
Awesome version of the song. It's actually a BB king song, not U2. They did a version of it with him and actually in my opinion it really doesn't have the feeling of blues. This version and another featuring Lang, Herbie Hancock and rather embarrassingly Joss Stone is also really top notch.
BB King might have been the first to release it -- but the song was actually written by Bono... so I think it's fair to call it a U2 song. The first time it was ever performed in public was by U2 (with BB joining them) in 1987.
Your another one of those types that would call U2 shit but actually know fuck all about them
There skill is writing a song that perfectly fits the artist they are writing for so that people like you make moronic comments about it being written by the actual artist ... same with wanderer which they they wrote for Johny cash and mystery girl for roy orbison
I'm sorry but i actually quite like U2, I'll thank you not to make assumptions as to my musical taste, I had been lead to believe that the song was originally written by BB king when it was first shown to me by a friend . I simply feel that the U2 version of the song doesn't do the writing justice, where as a traditional blues style does. I'd already been told it was actually written by Bono, so quite frankly your comment was just unnecessary and annoying.
Fair enough but there isnt really a u2 version of the song. you can see from the meeting with BB king when they first show it to him in the film rattle and hum that they just said here it is do your thing. They havent recorded a version on their own let alone release one
Maybe if you bothered to find out the history of the song before making stupid comments you wouldnt get people making pointless ones would you.
For heaven's sake. I've just said I'd already been corrected on the writing of the song, which was an honest mistake. As for my "stupid comments" as you so eloquently put it, they are merely my opinions, I never said anything about a recorded version of the song, I was referring to the live version on youtube, they may be playing with BB king however they still play and sing like U2, which I feel isn't the best I've heard the song played. Why is it you feel the need to insult me about this?
@BGarcia02 from Wikipedia: "When Love Comes to Town" is the 12th song on U2's 1988 album, Rattle and Hum, where it was recorded as a duet between U2 and B. B. King. It was released as the album's third single in 1989 and reached #6 in the UK singles chart, #10 on the Dutch Top 40 and #2 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
Written by: Adam Clayton; Dave Evans; Paul David Hewson; Laurence Jr Mullen
@BGarcia02 , You're wrong the song was written by U2 with BB King in mind and they performed it together. The best version is by Jonny Lang/ Joss Stone from Herbie Hancocks CD Possibilities
@BGarcia02 U2 saw BB perform in Dublin and afterwards they met him. Bono wrote WLCTT with BB in mind. Later BB said he was amazed that Bono could write such mature lyrics at such a young age. I agree!
