Dick just turned his first guitar upside down because he is a self taught lefty. That's how he plays the low strings like most of us play the high strings. Jimi could play left or right. I read on some liner notes he liked the tone knobs on top so he could see and use them easier. SRV has a lefty neck on a righty body, look at the tremolo bar. Check out Junior Brown's surf stuff too.

I just saw Dick Dale for the third time on October 13th in Cleveland. He has been battling rectal cancer for the past couple of years and is now in remission. He was out there fucking tearing it up with more energy than performers half his age. I've seen literally hundreds of concerts and he is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, performer I've ever seen. If he comes to your town and you love live music, you NEED to see him! You will not be disappointed.

the reason we have more powerful amps too, used to blow them out all the time and would have his friend Leo Fender (yes, Fender) make stronger ones. plus he introduced eastern sounding music pretty early on. that plus his style, hes responsible for heavy metal as well. But yes, he also brought surf to us, which is awesome.

I only look at Stevie Ray and Dick Dale in this video. Both of them are in such ecstasy when they are playing.There is a brief slight smile from Stevie Ray directed at Dick Dale when Dick does a sweet riff. Both of them (I think) play for the high they get from the music coming thru them, not for the acclaim or for the crowds or even the money. They truly love to play their guitars....and it shows on their faces and in their body language and most of all in the music itself. Love this.

Dick Dale was the original "TEST PILOT" for Leo's Stratocaster Design in 1954, he put it on the map in the 60's, and Stevie brought it back to life in the 80's, these two together are unbelievable legends, what a priceless piece of Americana, and both reasons why you can walk into SAM ASH and buy a Strat today.
