love how defensemen use the excuse/get sympathy that they have to finish their checks (meaning giving it 110%) which might require them to cross the line for acceptable hits, but an offensive player going all out for the puck (Eberle in this case) is an idiot who deserves the hit...I don't understand why people are so reluctant on calling Torres out, he's a pro player therefore he knows what he's doing, he aimed for the head, fuck the fact that there was no injury on the play, it was dirty
@KoffieFrats Please tell me you're kidding...Raffi Torres is a worthless shit and a waste of life. He has little skill, and all he does in his limited ice time is look for opportunities to take cheap shots in order to make himself look tough. While i can appreciate the goon role in hockey, a goon is a tough player who makes legal big hits or gets into fights. Torres is nothing more than a little rat. Players like Raffi Torres are a disgrace to the game of hockey, and have no place in the NHL.
@hockeyboy997 Yeah, so hows your team doing in the play-offs? By the way our "worthless piece of shit" knows how to finish checks *and* score... enjoy being a butthurt little bitch.
Damn I HATE Edmonton and I think that was a bullshit cheapshot! I can't believe an Edmonton fan (TheOILERSfan99's post) would say he brought that hit on himself! Anything to the head is a pussy cheap shot and the NHL should adopt the same no head contact policy that USA hockey rules have.
What the announcer was saying was retarded, they're trying to take away unsuspecting hits? So long as you just look backwards while skating the puck up the ice your good to go.
My biggest issue with this nonsense is that so long as I drop my head intentionally I can draw a penalty and get someone suspended? Hitting from behind...sure. Hockey is a rough game. If you can't take the hits then your in the wrong sport.
@tagerung90 From a purely technical standpoint they are (let's not be ridiculous). From a Genetics perspective clearly not. It is not a bad thing. This is the Darwinian theory at work. The strongest will always survive. Crosby is a prime example of an incredible talent on the ice but clearly his genetics/ body type do not allow him to absorb hits well. I'm getting rather sick of this new human condition to cater to the lowest common denominator.
@RichiRicheh Torres knew he was guilty. I'm super happy he got canned, as soon as he dumped seabrook, black hawks annihilated the canucks right up till OT game 7 right from that point on, that series should have been done in 4 the way the hawks played. The hit happened and the Canucks knew they were in for a rough ride.
@tagerung90 So I just want to be clear on where you stand. If any player turns their head away from ANY player approaching them then that is considered a blind hit/ headshot and the hitter deserves a penalty as well as suspension. If a player drops their head or is skating with their head down then they too are also 'off limits' for a check regardless of location or puck possession.
At some point the fans need to stop rewarding poor play and recognize that they're watching a contact sport.
I understand you shouldn't be skating around leaning towards a puck with your head down but there's no respect in this hit. Torres didn't aim for the head but he didn't try to avoid it either. He saw Eberle with his head down and used it to his advantage, not saying it's fair either. No matter how hard Eberle would have been hit he would have fallen, that's just unnecessary force on Torres' part. And this isn't the first time we've seen Torres' do this, I've lost all respect for him. End of rant
This is what pisses me off about this. A player sees an opponent coming and he still bends over knowing he is going to get it. Stand up and hit. You are suppose to protect yourself so do not lean way forward for the puck. This was not an elbow it was because a hockey player who should know better was bent to far forward. What an idiot.
"It deffinitely wasn't an elbow but it was a high hit" So everyone that wants a head shot call, you know what to do: crouch at the last second, the good news is you don't have to act like a bitch ala mike ribeiro
I'm getting really pissed off with the NHL and the commentators around the continent. Seriously, Eberle was skating with his head sticking out in front of him. How is Torres supposed to hit him 'cleanly'. At least he didn't get suspended for the recent one. too many people are pussies on this subject.
i remember when torres was an oiler, he accidentally elbowed a guy in the head once and the guy got a concussion, just glad eberle is okay, too many injured oilers, like every year,
All you people that think thats a headshot must not play hockey because Eberle crouched last second and as a result got hit in the shoulder/neck and got up right after so shut the fuck up it was clean
In the video you can tell Eberle sees him at the last second. Torres goes in with the intention of laying a clean hit, not expecting Eberle to bend over the second he gets there. Back when I played hockey it was part of the game to keep your head up. Big hits kept the other team on their toes and had them making mistakes. I totally agree that cheap head shots should not be condoned, but guys like Torres don't run around throwing elbows. They play hard to keep their spot on the team.
LOL watch 1:00 mark it shows eberles arm come up to block the hit, hes completely fine afterwards, no one walks away from a hit to the head thats vicious enough for a 4-gamer
Eberle leaned into that shit if he didnt lean forward he would have got destroyed anyways... NHL and the NFL are starting to become sorry ass sports to watch
The look on Eberle's face when he gets up suggests to me that he realizes he just got caught and will keep his head up next time, more embarrassed about getting leveled than anything else.
So if you're crouching down, the body can't be layed on you eh? Whatever happened to being aware of those around you. If we saw Eberle destroy a Russian or American with an identical hit in the World Junior Championships, then his stock would have gone through the roof and we'd applaud him for being a hard hitting Canadian.
The arm was tucked in so no elbow and a small forward like eberle was poking for the puck obviously torres is going to somehow make contact with a part of his head.... people in the NHL need to go back to school and learn how things happen
@torontario1 Nah the NHL wants the nucks to get the cup that's why they are favoring them so much this year. It's all about ratings nothing about the sport anymore
@torontario1 this hit was much dirtier but i'd be surprised if he doesnt get at least 4 games again....even though he's not that great of a player and they def wont miss him
Look at his head when Eberle gets hit.. It's at the same height as the boards which sits below the elbow for most NHL'ers on skates! If you're going to reach for a puck instead of skating hard you give up the hit instead of give out the hit. It's not rocket science its fucking hockey!! NHL needs to figure that out asap and discourage putting yourself in a vulnerable position to get rocked on your ass!!
@blue44blink182 the fact of the matter is you have to make some play on the puck, torres made no attempt at all which the nhl is now cracking down on for the right reason
@kleinknighlj actually you dont have to make a play on the puck, when a defensemen clears the puck around the boards and gets hit after, the hitting player isnt making a play for the puck so you clearly dont know what your talking about
@kage0612 actually you do have to make a play on the puck, you obv have never played hockey. you can hit a defenseman shortly after the puck is passed, if the ref deems that it was too long after then that's also interference.
Has anybody looked at how low Eberle is to the ice? What is the player supposed to do, crawl over and make a hit, Eberle was low and reaching, it's called putting yourself in a vulnerable position, other players are moving to fast to adjust their heights to make a clean hit, thats why sometimes the checker gets the worst of a hit. 5 yrs ago this is probably a non call, 10yrs ago its a good hit. The game is changing faster than the players can. Don't really like Torres but I have seen way worse.
Someone remind me why this was 5 and a game, plus 4 games (including two playoff games), and Jarrett Stoll's blatant headshot on Ian White (from behind, forearm, targeting head, principal point of contact=head, defenseless/unsuspecting player) is 1 game and no penalty?
@zZzFernandezZz dont try to explain bullshit there kid. just bend over and take getting put out again for the 3rd time. right up ur ass. pray u homos dont meet up with pattie kane.
I think his post game comments are why he got 4 games. He pretty much admitted it was intentional. He says he going to play the puck, then he says Eberle was vulnerable and that he was finishing a check. So he saw Eberle vulnerable, and forget about the puck to deliver a headshot.
@OilSenz So if I am a forward given this new rule why would I ever look up for more than a second. I can draw a penalty with every single hit so long as I angle myself properly to my opponent. A hit from behind is one thing (that deserves a suspension) these "Head shots" really need to be thought through a lot more prior to implementing rules which overly favour poor playing style. My pee Wee coach told me to skate with my head up. These guys are supposed to be pros!?!
I think that what did Torres in (in terms of the 4-gamer)....was the fact that the puck was there for him to take....and instead he took the hit on a player trying to beat him to the puck and vulnerable.
AHAHAHA, the rest of the year??? If Jordan doesn't reach, it's a clean hit. Yes, the penalty was appropriate, but a severe punishment for a first time offender? Not a chance.
Im an edmonton fan and four games is insane. yeah it's an elbow and yeah raffi torres should have been suspended but eberle was OK and he leaned forward with his head down so he brought it upon himself somewhat
@ctucker31, The Oiler was an idiot for leaning so far forward. We teach the kids from their first game to protect themselves when they start hitting. Now we have moronic NHLers that lean forward and also turn their backs, and if you come in for a check then thats the opponents fault for being stupid. The Oiler should have stood up and hit not bend forward to get whacked. Idiot of the week.
@Ingram101a This is just a dumb comment, your telling me you teach kids to skate standing straight up? I call bullshit on that one. Try skating without leaning forward ( not gliding which is what players too after they skate up to speed).
@Zackarius14, you have the vision of stiff legged people skating bolt upright like the local family skate. That is not what I mean. You should never skate with your head so far ahead of your Butt. Eberle had his head so far in front of his butt that the only thing you are going to hit is the guy in the head. That means Eberle's thinking to reach for the puck knowing that someone is going to hit him is just Dumb.
@TheOILERSfan99 i agree with you completely except for the elbow. Torres had his elbow tucked and then pushes off with it, a lot of players do it (including myself). this would have been a clean shoulder to chest hit if eberle didnt reach for the puck. Torres was already commited to the hit and you cant uncommit to a hit in a split second
@pissed7off Eberle caused it? If you can call skating toward the puck 'causation'. Torres could have easily pushed Eberle off the puck by continuing his regular forward momentum, but he decided to throw himself into the hit, especially seeing the emphasis was aimed at Eberle's head.
Four games is nothing. Prior incident shouldn't mean anything toward a lighter penalization in this situation. You tried to injure the guy, you sit some games.
He caused this by reaching for the puck and making himself vulnerable. That's the only reason this situation happened, because as you can see, Torres went to play the man, which he's allowed to do. The penalty was appropriate, but "four games" for a guy who had never been suspended before is a little steep (the NHL war room has been fucking up royally recently).
@pissed7off The four games is inconsequential. The Canucks have dominated the regular season. Essentially, you're being penalized with two playoff games, and the loss of Torres won't destroy the Canucks enough to be taken in the first round.
So what? That doesn't make it fair. Maybe it will actually have an effect, you never know, we'll have to wait and see.
If the NHL wants to send a message, they should have suspended Chara, but nope, no prior suspensions, and no clear intent, just like this. They should have suspended Bertuzzi too for that elbow, if anyone, as he actually DOES have a history of headshots.
@pissed7off We can't really argue fairness. The NHL has been terrible as of late in making fair calls. Obviously, Chara should have been suspended, if for nothing more than to demand increased caution from the players.
My point was that the suspension wasn't really all that bad. I'll admit it was a poor choice for the NHL to start cracking down (if that's what they're doing), but Torres STILL threw himself into Eberle more than he should have. That's the justification.
@pissed7off For Torres, possibly. The salary deduction is ultimately more than the hit warranted. It's not a big deal for the Canucks, though. I'm pretty certain they'll do fine against Chicago or Anaheim for those two games.
I can't believe all you doorknobs complaining about this being a blind hit, when the replay shows Eberle reaching up with his right arm to protect himself. It was a good, clean, open-ice hit that was maybe a little high. Unfortunately with all the concussion hoopla going on, the NHL are forced to come down on anything that could be viewed as a head hit. 6-months ago this wouldn't even have rated a major. Would have been two minutes in the sin bin.
Eberle had his head down and he should have been more aware of players around him. Still, Raffi knew what he did was wrong but what does that say about the NHL? There will be no hitting within a few years?
BTW, I have seen Richards hit Booth the same way, was much worse, and he got away with it. The only consistency in the NHL is its inconsistency.

At most, and its still a stretch, its a 2 min penalty. Torres make a play on the puck (by playing it) then runs into a leaned over and out-stretched Eberly. Point of contact is high shoulder low neck/head area due to Eberly extending further right as Torres hits with a clean shoulder. I don't disagree with the ref making a call for a hit to the head because of the speed of the play and positioning, but by no means was this blind side as it was from in front of him, in the direction of the puck.
Is this the National hockey league or the European hockey league. When are guys going to realize that this is the fucken NHL and you have to be accountable for your actions KEEP YOUR HEAD UP whats he gonna do let Eberle chip the puck past him for an easy clear. This was clean as clean if you dont want your head taken off stand up keep your head up and play this game the way it was meant to be played
@fwayndo1 your a dumbass. you probably never make it to AA. these kind of hits can kill a players career. faster players, bigger shoulder pads, goons that do thses kind of hits. BLIND SIDE HIT. 4 games? too light of a suspension. to make a point the nhl should have given him the remainder of the season plus the playoffs. but winning teams always get a little slap on the hand.
you neanderfucks: Torres is a dirty piece of shit and it was a BLIND side hit. Implying BLIND=cannot see therefore cannot PROTECT himself. Have any of you mouthbreathers made it to highschool yet???? Until your backwards thinking is erased this game is going to remain in the toilet ... go watch some MMA
@pidjify it's clearly visible that eberle puts his arm up to protect himself, i'm not saying it's a clean hit, but i am saying eberle saw him coming and it shouldn't be a 4 game suspension
@pidjify what do you mean this game will remain in the toilet? This is the best sport on earth, i doubt you can get any real canadian to say otherwise! This is how we have loved our sport for almost 100 years and how we grew up playing it. He put himself in that position, Rule #1 keep you head up and dont reach for the puck. First thing every kid is taught in hockey.
@pidjify Blind? Why does Eberle raise his arm just before contact then? Because he was trying to PROTECT himself! Maybe you're the one who's blind?
I understand your frustration though. It sucks that beating the Canucks two in a row doesn't change the fact that the Oilers are last in the standings and you live in a shithole like Edmonton, hey?
I don't like Raffi Torres, but this hit was clean. Eberle had his head down and was bending down. Where is Torres supposed to put his arm. His arm was where god put it, on his side. There was no elbow. I can't believe the NHL would deal a suspension on a hit like this and not Chara's hit. Ribeiro threw a huge elbow on Handzus earlier this week and there was no suspension on that hit either.
It's an NHL call, not a hockey call. Elbow came out a bit, Eberle saw it last second and backed off enough so that he didn't get injured.... suspension in today's game. Not in yesterday's game. Dumb play by Torres knowing that his team will need him in the playoffs, and there are so few games left. Just play the puck, the game means fuck all.
It looks to me like it was when Eberle crouched down at the last second that caused this to become an elbow to the head. I think the area of the ice where the hit occurs ought to be a factor. Chara's hit, and also Matt Cooke's elbow, were both hits in the neutral zone, whereas this hit was in the corner and in the offensive zone, and every hockey player knows that you're taking your life in your hands when you put your head down in that situation.
Rather surprised by the four game suspension but the GMs have all called for stiffer penalties rather than those 1 or 2 game suspensions so I guess it isn't too crazy. In the end, it was a hit to the head and that's all that matters. I wish some blame would be put on the players getting hit as many of them could easily prevent it by keeping their head up and facing up to contact, rather than turning your back to it. Oh well, guess that's the new ways of the NHL.
The NHL never ceases to amaze me. Chara nearly kills someone, 0 games because they thought he didn't "mean" it. Raffi levels Eberle (and doesn't injure him) in a legal hit, gets 4 games. It's like they hate Canadian teams or something.
@alexn726 A "rubout" which just so happened to happen at such angle that nearly snapped Pac's neck and killed him. Why don't you try having someone 70 pounds heavier than you force your head into a stanchion in a perpendicular position at a high speed and after you've gone to the hospital tell everyone you were just "rubbed in".
wow everyone wants to turn hockey into fucking curling, good hit.

Torres is a beast!! One of my fav Canucks! :)
KoffieFrats 10 months ago
@KoffieFrats Please tell me you're kidding...Raffi Torres is a worthless shit and a waste of life. He has little skill, and all he does in his limited ice time is look for opportunities to take cheap shots in order to make himself look tough. While i can appreciate the goon role in hockey, a goon is a tough player who makes legal big hits or gets into fights. Torres is nothing more than a little rat. Players like Raffi Torres are a disgrace to the game of hockey, and have no place in the NHL.
hockeyboy997 9 months ago
@hockeyboy997 Yeah, so hows your team doing in the play-offs? By the way our "worthless piece of shit" knows how to finish checks *and* score... enjoy being a butthurt little bitch.
DJPhysch 9 months ago
Damn I HATE Edmonton and I think that was a bullshit cheapshot! I can't believe an Edmonton fan (TheOILERSfan99's post) would say he brought that hit on himself! Anything to the head is a pussy cheap shot and the NHL should adopt the same no head contact policy that USA hockey rules have.
icepenguin66 10 months ago
What the announcer was saying was retarded, they're trying to take away unsuspecting hits? So long as you just look backwards while skating the puck up the ice your good to go.
Zackarius14 10 months ago
My biggest issue with this nonsense is that so long as I drop my head intentionally I can draw a penalty and get someone suspended? Hitting from behind...sure. Hockey is a rough game. If you can't take the hits then your in the wrong sport.
RichiRicheh 10 months ago 9
@RichiRicheh So Paul Kariya and Savard, pacierty, crosby, Horton all aren't NHL material? you gotta be joking.
tagerung90 5 months ago
@tagerung90 From a purely technical standpoint they are (let's not be ridiculous). From a Genetics perspective clearly not. It is not a bad thing. This is the Darwinian theory at work. The strongest will always survive. Crosby is a prime example of an incredible talent on the ice but clearly his genetics/ body type do not allow him to absorb hits well. I'm getting rather sick of this new human condition to cater to the lowest common denominator.
RichiRicheh 5 months ago
@RichiRicheh Torres knew he was guilty. I'm super happy he got canned, as soon as he dumped seabrook, black hawks annihilated the canucks right up till OT game 7 right from that point on, that series should have been done in 4 the way the hawks played. The hit happened and the Canucks knew they were in for a rough ride.
tagerung90 1 week ago
@tagerung90 So I just want to be clear on where you stand. If any player turns their head away from ANY player approaching them then that is considered a blind hit/ headshot and the hitter deserves a penalty as well as suspension. If a player drops their head or is skating with their head down then they too are also 'off limits' for a check regardless of location or puck possession.
At some point the fans need to stop rewarding poor play and recognize that they're watching a contact sport.
RichiRicheh 1 week ago
I understand you shouldn't be skating around leaning towards a puck with your head down but there's no respect in this hit. Torres didn't aim for the head but he didn't try to avoid it either. He saw Eberle with his head down and used it to his advantage, not saying it's fair either. No matter how hard Eberle would have been hit he would have fallen, that's just unnecessary force on Torres' part. And this isn't the first time we've seen Torres' do this, I've lost all respect for him. End of rant

jordanmatechuk 10 months ago
This is what pisses me off about this. A player sees an opponent coming and he still bends over knowing he is going to get it. Stand up and hit. You are suppose to protect yourself so do not lean way forward for the puck. This was not an elbow it was because a hockey player who should know better was bent to far forward. What an idiot.
Ingram101a 10 months ago
"It deffinitely wasn't an elbow but it was a high hit" So everyone that wants a head shot call, you know what to do: crouch at the last second, the good news is you don't have to act like a bitch ala mike ribeiro
skydome29 10 months ago
I'm getting really pissed off with the NHL and the commentators around the continent. Seriously, Eberle was skating with his head sticking out in front of him. How is Torres supposed to hit him 'cleanly'. At least he didn't get suspended for the recent one. too many people are pussies on this subject.

MMA6049 10 months ago
In the video you can tell Eberle sees him at the last second. Torres goes in with the intention of laying a clean hit, not expecting Eberle to bend over the second he gets there. Back when I played hockey it was part of the game to keep your head up. Big hits kept the other team on their toes and had them making mistakes. I totally agree that cheap head shots should not be condoned, but guys like Torres don't run around throwing elbows. They play hard to keep their spot on the team.

The look on Eberle's face when he gets up suggests to me that he realizes he just got caught and will keep his head up next time, more embarrassed about getting leveled than anything else.
canuck4life81 10 months ago
So if you're crouching down, the body can't be layed on you eh? Whatever happened to being aware of those around you. If we saw Eberle destroy a Russian or American with an identical hit in the World Junior Championships, then his stock would have gone through the roof and we'd applaud him for being a hard hitting Canadian.
canuck4life81 10 months ago
The arm was tucked in so no elbow and a small forward like eberle was poking for the puck obviously torres is going to somehow make contact with a part of his head.... people in the NHL need to go back to school and learn how things happen

kleinknighlj 10 months ago
Look at his head when Eberle gets hit.. It's at the same height as the boards which sits below the elbow for most NHL'ers on skates! If you're going to reach for a puck instead of skating hard you give up the hit instead of give out the hit. It's not rocket science its fucking hockey!! NHL needs to figure that out asap and discourage putting yourself in a vulnerable position to get rocked on your ass!!
blue44blink182 10 months ago
@blue44blink182 the fact of the matter is you have to make some play on the puck, torres made no attempt at all which the nhl is now cracking down on for the right reason
kleinknighlj 10 months ago
@kleinknighlj actually you dont have to make a play on the puck, when a defensemen clears the puck around the boards and gets hit after, the hitting player isnt making a play for the puck so you clearly dont know what your talking about
kage0612 10 months ago
@kage0612 actually you do have to make a play on the puck, you obv have never played hockey. you can hit a defenseman shortly after the puck is passed, if the ref deems that it was too long after then that's also interference.
kleinknighlj 10 months ago
if his head is that low, where and how are you supposed to hit him?
Bt3am 10 months ago
@Bt3am you don't....this play was very unnessasary to make a hit. He had a chance to grab the puck and instead went for the cheapshot.
Kartracer6 10 months ago
Has anybody looked at how low Eberle is to the ice? What is the player supposed to do, crawl over and make a hit, Eberle was low and reaching, it's called putting yourself in a vulnerable position, other players are moving to fast to adjust their heights to make a clean hit, thats why sometimes the checker gets the worst of a hit. 5 yrs ago this is probably a non call, 10yrs ago its a good hit. The game is changing faster than the players can. Don't really like Torres but I have seen way worse.

I think his post game comments are why he got 4 games. He pretty much admitted it was intentional. He says he going to play the puck, then he says Eberle was vulnerable and that he was finishing a check. So he saw Eberle vulnerable, and forget about the puck to deliver a headshot.
OilSenz 11 months ago 10
@OilSenz So if I am a forward given this new rule why would I ever look up for more than a second. I can draw a penalty with every single hit so long as I angle myself properly to my opponent. A hit from behind is one thing (that deserves a suspension) these "Head shots" really need to be thought through a lot more prior to implementing rules which overly favour poor playing style. My pee Wee coach told me to skate with my head up. These guys are supposed to be pros!?!
RichiRicheh 5 months ago
I think that what did Torres in (in terms of the 4-gamer)....was the fact that the puck was there for him to take....and instead he took the hit on a player trying to beat him to the puck and vulnerable.

ctucker31 10 months ago
@ctucker31, The Oiler was an idiot for leaning so far forward. We teach the kids from their first game to protect themselves when they start hitting. Now we have moronic NHLers that lean forward and also turn their backs, and if you come in for a check then thats the opponents fault for being stupid. The Oiler should have stood up and hit not bend forward to get whacked. Idiot of the week.
Ingram101a 10 months ago
@Ingram101a This is just a dumb comment, your telling me you teach kids to skate standing straight up? I call bullshit on that one. Try skating without leaning forward ( not gliding which is what players too after they skate up to speed).
Zackarius14 10 months ago
@Zackarius14, you have the vision of stiff legged people skating bolt upright like the local family skate. That is not what I mean. You should never skate with your head so far ahead of your Butt. Eberle had his head so far in front of his butt that the only thing you are going to hit is the guy in the head. That means Eberle's thinking to reach for the puck knowing that someone is going to hit him is just Dumb.
Ingram101a 10 months ago
@TheOILERSfan99 respect my man i couldn't agree with you more.
let88it88be 10 months ago
@TheOILERSfan99 i agree with you completely except for the elbow. Torres had his elbow tucked and then pushes off with it, a lot of players do it (including myself). this would have been a clean shoulder to chest hit if eberle didnt reach for the puck. Torres was already commited to the hit and you cant uncommit to a hit in a split second

Damn right it's too much, considering he had no prior suspensions from the NHL, and that Eberle was fine (and caused the incident)
pissed7off 11 months ago
@pissed7off Eberle caused it? If you can call skating toward the puck 'causation'. Torres could have easily pushed Eberle off the puck by continuing his regular forward momentum, but he decided to throw himself into the hit, especially seeing the emphasis was aimed at Eberle's head.
Four games is nothing. Prior incident shouldn't mean anything toward a lighter penalization in this situation. You tried to injure the guy, you sit some games.
Psyshimmer 11 months ago
@Psyshimmer
He caused this by reaching for the puck and making himself vulnerable. That's the only reason this situation happened, because as you can see, Torres went to play the man, which he's allowed to do. The penalty was appropriate, but "four games" for a guy who had never been suspended before is a little steep (the NHL war room has been fucking up royally recently).
pissed7off 11 months ago
@pissed7off The four games is inconsequential. The Canucks have dominated the regular season. Essentially, you're being penalized with two playoff games, and the loss of Torres won't destroy the Canucks enough to be taken in the first round.
Psyshimmer 11 months ago
@Psyshimmer
So what? That doesn't make it fair. Maybe it will actually have an effect, you never know, we'll have to wait and see.
If the NHL wants to send a message, they should have suspended Chara, but nope, no prior suspensions, and no clear intent, just like this. They should have suspended Bertuzzi too for that elbow, if anyone, as he actually DOES have a history of headshots.
pissed7off 11 months ago
@pissed7off We can't really argue fairness. The NHL has been terrible as of late in making fair calls. Obviously, Chara should have been suspended, if for nothing more than to demand increased caution from the players.
My point was that the suspension wasn't really all that bad. I'll admit it was a poor choice for the NHL to start cracking down (if that's what they're doing), but Torres STILL threw himself into Eberle more than he should have. That's the justification.
Psyshimmer 11 months ago
@Psyshimmer
I was expecting 2 games, tbh, but 4 is just stupid.
pissed7off 11 months ago
@pissed7off For Torres, possibly. The salary deduction is ultimately more than the hit warranted. It's not a big deal for the Canucks, though. I'm pretty certain they'll do fine against Chicago or Anaheim for those two games.
Psyshimmer 11 months ago
I can't believe all you doorknobs complaining about this being a blind hit, when the replay shows Eberle reaching up with his right arm to protect himself. It was a good, clean, open-ice hit that was maybe a little high. Unfortunately with all the concussion hoopla going on, the NHL are forced to come down on anything that could be viewed as a head hit. 6-months ago this wouldn't even have rated a major. Would have been two minutes in the sin bin.
BigMig5 11 months ago
Eberle had his head down and he should have been more aware of players around him. Still, Raffi knew what he did was wrong but what does that say about the NHL? There will be no hitting within a few years?
BTW, I have seen Richards hit Booth the same way, was much worse, and he got away with it. The only consistency in the NHL is its inconsistency.

Compare this hit to the one earlier this week in LA... /watch?v=VpQOe34OWQg
Not even a second look by the league for that in comparison to 4 games for Torres?
With of them being borderline clean hits this exposes some serious inconsistencies in the league right now
jamessaunders25 11 months ago
At most, and its still a stretch, its a 2 min penalty. Torres make a play on the puck (by playing it) then runs into a leaned over and out-stretched Eberly. Point of contact is high shoulder low neck/head area due to Eberly extending further right as Torres hits with a clean shoulder. I don't disagree with the ref making a call for a hit to the head because of the speed of the play and positioning, but by no means was this blind side as it was from in front of him, in the direction of the puck.
jtstahr 11 months ago
@jtstahr Where exactly do you see Torres "making a play on the puck", he shows complete disregard for
the puck itself, and Eberle though he was about to,never quite reaches it, not from any video angle we've seen,
the puck slides just past the edge of his stickblade. If Torres had said, "I have to have more respect for
a player in a vulnerable position, and more focus on reaching the puck": I bet he would've gotten 2 games
at the most. It was 2 for the hit, 2 more for "not getting it".

UweTODdid 11 months ago

pidjify 11 months ago
@pidjify it's clearly visible that eberle puts his arm up to protect himself, i'm not saying it's a clean hit, but i am saying eberle saw him coming and it shouldn't be a 4 game suspension

@pidjify what do you mean this game will remain in the toilet? This is the best sport on earth, i doubt you can get any real canadian to say otherwise! First thing every kid is taught in hockey.
highflyer4 11 months ago
@pidjify Blind? Why does Eberle raise his arm just before contact then? Because he was trying to PROTECT himself! Maybe you're the one who's blind?
I understand your frustration though. It sucks that beating the Canucks two in a row doesn't change the fact that the Oilers are last in the standings and you live in a shithole like Edmonton, hey?
BigMig5 11 months ago
@pidjify
Are YOU blind or did you NOT see Eberle raise his arm to protect his head?
pissed7off 11 months ago
@pidjify
Notice the hand coming up to protect the head. This negates your theory of a "blind side hit".
Know that this is Torres' first suspension in his NHL career.
pissed7off 11 months ago
I don't like Raffi Torres, but this hit was clean. Eberle had his head down and was bending down. Where is Torres supposed to put his arm. His arm was where god put it, on his side. There was no elbow. I can't believe the NHL would deal a suspension on a hit like this and not Chara's hit. Ribeiro threw a huge elbow on Handzus earlier this week and there was no suspension on that hit either.
gr8foppa21 11 months ago
If he put his arms around him, he would've been called for a clutch and grab
lloydos19 11 months ago
Good hit, bad call and the NHL is really in trouble. They just don't know what to do anymore.
lloydos19 11 months ago
Pause at 1:14. Torres' elbow is on Eberle's shoulder. Eberle has his head down, where was Torres' elbow supposed to go?
thatGrammarNazi 11 months ago
@thatGrammarNazi exactly, Torres had his arm where god put it, on his side. BAD CALL!!!
gr8foppa21 11 months ago
It's an NHL call, not a hockey call. Elbow came out a bit, Eberle saw it last second and backed off enough so that he didn't get injured.... suspension in today's game. Not in yesterday's game. Dumb play by Torres knowing that his team will need him in the playoffs, and there are so few games left. Just play the puck, the game means fuck all.
MrBrillare 11 months ago
It looks to me like it was when Eberle crouched down at the last second that caused this to become an elbow to the head. I think the area of the ice where the hit occurs ought to be a factor. Chara's hit, and also Matt Cooke's elbow, were both hits in the neutral zone, whereas this hit was in the corner and in the offensive zone, and every hockey player knows that you're taking your life in your hands when you put your head down in that situation.
Leatherskin78 11 months ago
Rather surprised by the four game suspension but the GMs have all called for stiffer penalties rather than those 1 or 2 game suspensions so I guess it isn't too crazy. In the end, it was a hit to the head and that's all that matters. I wish some blame would be put on the players getting hit as many of them could easily prevent it by keeping their head up and facing up to contact, rather than turning your back to it. Oh well, guess that's the new ways of the NHL.
alexn726 11 months ago
The NHL never ceases to amaze me. Chara nearly kills someone, 0 games because they thought he didn't "mean" it. Raffi levels Eberle (and doesn't injure him) in a legal hit, gets 4 games. It's like they hate Canadian teams or something.
mtgowns1 11 months ago
@mtgowns1 Or perhaps it is because this was a hit to the head and Chara's hit was a rubout. Get a clue dude.
alexn726 11 months ago
@alexn726 A "rubout" which just so happened to happen at such angle that nearly snapped Pac's neck and killed him. Why don't you try having someone 70 pounds heavier than you force your head into a stanchion in a perpendicular position at a high speed and after you've gone to the hospital tell everyone you were just "rubbed in".
mtgowns1 11 months ago
