There was a club in a suburb south of Seattle Wa., named the Spanish Castle Club. Jimi frequented this club in his teen years. I don't know the actual details of why Jimi wrote the song, but you can bet the club was the inspiration for this song. =)

And before I saw your comment about jimicolors, I was just about to say that you have very similar looking fingers on your "freting hand" as jimicolors. I wonder if that's just a coincidence or the player's hands shape up physically like that depending on the style of holding the notes (ie Jimi style w/ thumb over chords etc.)

With players like jimicolors and me, the long fingers cause us to fret the strings at an angle. It's as if we need a fatter necks.

Anyway, Jimi used his thumb often. Two things happen...you can do additional note inflections with the free'd up fingers, and you don't need to "reach around" as far to make a barre chord.

I learned them all by ear, bro. As a result, I do not play the solos as well as I would like to, but I feel pretty good about the rhythm sections.

GuitarPlayer magazine put out a DVD last summer, where Andy Aledort teaches every song on the album "Bold as Love". This song is on it. Check eBay for one. Good luck!

Sadly, it is no longer listed.

The good news is, you can set the balance to drop out the guitar channel on most tunes on Jimi's early recordings (ie: Are You Experienced -and- Axis:Bold as Love)
