People have to also remember this was about the time of the beginning of NBC's lack of dominance in the ratings. NBC's weren't that bad, yet, but they weren't having the success getting the newer more urban or suburban oriented shows as CBS & ABC were starting to attract and even when they did the shows that did go to NBC were not as strong in the ratings.
@sneezyize It was a very drastic change then. Any Western, Rural or Country Bumpkin show had a target on it's back or already got canceled by then. The fantastic and fantasy shows were also in trouble, they too were dying off. Everything was going URBAN, Gritty, Cops or social commentary.
NBC made changes to The Virginian during this season, renaming it "The Men From Shiloh." I think the execs wanted to make this a Western version of "The Name Of The Game," both with that series and Bonanza.
As per this theme, I rather like it. I can see an effort might have been made to freshen the show. This episode aired 10 January 1971. The original theme song was revived for the final (1972-73) season.
I agree the orig. theme song was priceless...but as several shows hit the 1970's, execs thought it would be "groovy" to have something different. And not just Bonanza but lots of shows.
Why on Earth did they change theme songs? The original is one of the most memorable from the Golden Age of television; this is about as memorable as a mosquito buzzing in your ear.
The last this theme from David Rose was heard when The Hallmark Channel brought back as "Bonanza:The Lost Episodes",which contains the episodes of Bonanza from 1965 until 1973.

I wasn't around at the time, but if this is legitimate somebody made a monumental mistake.

You wonder what some TV execs are thinking when they make a change like this.

The revamped Bonanza theme has to be one of the worst in TV history! The original theme from seasons 1-6 was classic, the latter was dribble!
