Ive always bought planet waves because of their warranty but ive never compared them to any other i had just assumed that as they were a popular make they would be as good as anything else out there........Now im wondering ;0)
seeing the differnce is not the same as being better. People often see cables and use their parameters as indicator - the lower the better. But in fact those low capacitance cables produce sterile sound, because the ressonant frequency is too high. Proper capacitive and resistive load is a must to bring this ressonant pick to pleasant frequency, no load = sterile sound of emg pickups. It is for a reason that blues players get varitone circuits for more sound combinations. proper load + eq = must
How does cable resistance factor in considering the cable's resistance is nill compared to the pickup's 5-10k?
Also some pickups have an annoying upper mid/lower treble spike while lacking the sparkle when using higher capacitance cables.Low capacitance seems like a good idea in that case.
Also I'm curious to know what negative effect transparent sounding cables have on the bloom/attack of alnico magnets?EMG's sound "sterile" for their design as a whole.
@spentonmediocrity sure, you can skip cable's resistive load, because it is like 1 ohm per normal cable in series. - that is nothing.while comparing to paralel 670k or 1Mohm load... You measure resistive load by input impedance combined with potentiometers load. So if you have 1M input 500k pot x2 its (1*0,5*0,5)/ (1+ 0,5+0,5) = 0,125Mohm = 125kohm so it's 10x pickup's load - that's ok. If you increase load - by lowering input resistance you will decrease ressonant pick in height + kill treble
@spentonmediocrity and considering pickups - it's about coil winding and overall capacitance of the pickup. Every pickup has it's own electrical capacitance like a cable, which in fact kills treble a bit + MOVE RESONANT PEAK to the area of the mids. That's why it has a lot of mids. But a good pickup ( in terms of physics) has a resonnant pick pretty high - which enables You to play with this capacitive load - you can add a capactiro across signal and ground and emulate any frequency peak.
@spentonmediocrity when You have a poor pickup there is nothing You can do, because pickup is loaded from the beginning and You have a resonnant peak below 1-2khz - something like tone pot on. cable capacitance can do good on a properly constructed pickup. Most of guitarist choose their pickups by empirical tests - so it's random - and the best are those with some flaws in construction -like scatterwound... bigger capacitance? It's good to know that Your pickup can be sometimes adjusted a bit
OK,thanks for the info.I'm still learning about the effects of cable on tonality, looks like I'll have to look beyond the the obvious effect of capacitance and inductance as I'm learning that dynamics are affected too by things not yet understood.
i have a problem with my guitar cable , my amp has this humming buzz when i plug it in, wich gets really loud when i switch to overdrive, its a proel cable and i think the problem is because the jack head is completely metal and touches the internal solder i m not sure (before i had a fender tone master wich worked perfectly with no noise at all) but if anyone knows anything about it and how can i fix that please reply, ty.
i really appreciate when people do a comparison with products, really helps determine the differences, however i didnt notice near enough of a difference to justify the cost of the elixir cable. cables wont make a guy sound better anyways, his fingers will though, and practicing costs you nothing. but thanks for the video, very appreciated.
Thanks for doing this vid. You can certainly here the difference. I guess the cables you use DOES effect your tone a LOT! Looks like i'll be investing in a couple of these Elixir ones
It is obvious when you wait for the youtube red loading bar to complete, then you can easily switch from the first clean sound to the second. For the disto sound it is less obvious though but you can hear there is more power coming through the wire, as soon as I switch on the drive you can hear feedback.
I think the elixir cable made the sound louder and bolder. I may have to invest in these cables. Thanks for the video.

Sounds like he is playing the first cable with much lower volume than the second cable. Maybe that IS the quality of the cable, but not sure.

wow that's amazing, i just ordered one of these can't wait to try it out myself as the cable i've been using for years is really crap, shame on me

That actually is just a channel switch... not a distortion pedal.

What's that thingy down there where you were switching it to rock and normal what's that called.

how do these cables compare to monster cables? i don't wont to go and buy the inferior cable.

I would really appreciate it if you could do a test between Elixir and Monster

absolutely!! just like if he did change the tubes or like if he added an eq pedal!!

you should do the test with the same dinamics to we really compare the tonal change!!!

what are you talking about tonepatroller? There is a huge difference both in sound and volume. I think its worth the money
