This is just a theory, but the doctor said that there is only ONE time he would ever tell someone his name. Obviously it couldn't have been his wedding day because River told Amy that wasn't what he had whispered. So, the only other time would be his death. Therefore she must of said sorry because by her knowing his name it means he dies, and must have told River his name while he was dying.
I just thought of a theory what if River was never here what if river dies before the library in a plot to confuse people and the doctor takes the tesselecta and goes to the library dressed as river reenacting what he remembers knowing that he going to meet her later and keep the timeline in check THAT WOULD BE CRAZY

New theory I just made up on the spot: River's screwdriver is a rebuilt version of 10's, after 11 broke it in The Eleventh Hour. If I recall, he burnt it out, but didn't loose it, meaning it's probably sitting in a junk drawer somewhere in the TARDIS.

She could have visited Gallifrey before the war, and watched him grow up, knew him. She could have been told by The Master in another time stream. Tennant could have gone to the future and met her and had a real wedding, etc. It's all up to the writers.
But, I fell in love with this character in this episode!
@redmatrix I did too and knowing what we know now...that makes this episode seem so tragic. Although it's nice that you can spot little clues that wouldn't have made sense up until now. I think we will see more of river since her story has been planned for ages.

With the recent season finale, THIS part has me wondering. If the doctor didn't tell her his name, what is she telling him now?! Then again it still leaves the door open for a potential show where she /does/ learn his name but I fear that particular episode will be a show in which the doctor dies and tells River the big secret he's never told anyone. Maybe she learns his name in another situation that hasn't happened yet... there is the first question after all which is pretty much "what is the doctors real name" so maybe she learns it later, or maybe he told her his name too who knows.
don't get me wrong! She came across as a very sweet woman. I don't wish that sweet old lady any harm. But as Dr Phil gently tried to point out to her, this behavior isn't normal. and its often used as a means to hide fears of growing old and dying.
My point isn't that river is afraid of dying. My point is that just because someone's "nice" doesn't mean that they don't look like a complete and total fool.

@MssWiggly because the doctor's name has been a secret since the beginning of the series in 1963, none of his companions, friends, or enemy's know it (except possible other time lords, but there all dead now). Their must be some reason why he hasn't told them, and apparently its not a good one.

Anoher possibility is the Doctor doesn't know is real name in the sense he can't recall it from memory. He may recognize it when he hears it but can't specifically remember it. Perhaps a safety mechanism.

She could have visited Gallifrey before the war, and watched him grow up, knew him. She could have been told by The Master in another time stream. Tennant could have gone to the future and met her and had a real wedding, etc. It's all up to the writers.
But, I fell in love with this character in this episode!

@redmatrix I did too and knowing what we know now...that makes this episode seem so tragic. Although it's nice that you can spot little clues that wouldn't have made sense up until now. I think we will see more of river since her story has been planned for ages.

@amirizar2012 IT is amazing, huh? I think she was Davies' idea, and Moffatt has not gone astray. There was no River Song in the old series, but imagine if she would show up in a time displacement with a previous doctor?

With the recent season finale, THIS part has me wondering. If the doctor didn't tell her his name, what is she telling him now?! Then again it still leaves the door open for a potential show where she /does/ learn his name but I fear that particular episode will be a show in which the doctor dies and tells River the big secret he's never told anyone. Or perhaps he'll just regenerate. AH POSSIBILITIES!!!

@izzieismadeofwin yeah I wondered that too. Because "look in my eyes" or whatever out of context like it would be here would mean nothing to the doctor now. Maybe she learns his name in another situation that hasn't happened yet... there is the first question after all which is pretty much "what is the doctors real name" so maybe she learns it later, or maybe he told her his name too who knows.

don't get me wrong! She came across as a very sweet woman. I don't wish that sweet old lady any harm. But as Dr Phil gently tried to point out to her, this behavior isn't normal. and its often used as a means to hide fears of growing old and dying.
My point isn't that river is afraid of dying. My point is that just because someone's "nice" doesn't mean that they don't look like a complete and total fool.

fantastic together! Now she (the actress not the character she played) would have made a good river song. Alex is just too old to be believable.
and people can stfu with the ageist crap. its called reality. no one wants to see 2 people together who look like mother and son. I was just watching an old Dr Phil show yesterday from 2006. This 62 grandmother had all sorts of plastic surgery to look young she dresses in mini-skirts and leopard print gloves and she looks like a complete fool.

disagreeing obvious will never work for a casting agency. you need to have good taste and a good eye to match up two actors. There are good-looking MARRIED actors who look like crap on screen.

@MssWiggly because the doctor's name has been a secret since the beginning of the series in 1963, none of his companions, friends, or enemy's know it (except possible other time lords, but there all dead now). Their must be some reason why he hasn't told them, and apparently its not a good one.

@xxmizzcrazyxx I'm thinkin he never tells anyone his real name because it's Gallifreyian, it doesn't translate, and nobody would understand it anyway. Only time he could tell anyone his name and have it make sense is if the person he's speaking to, speaks Gallifreyian. They had me going for a while thinking River was the Rani because she left a message for him in that language and really, what human ever bothers to learn that language?

Anoher possibility is the Doctor doesn't know is real name in the sense he can't recall it from memory. He may recognize it when he hears it but can't specifically remember it. Perhaps a safety mechanism.
