Your question contains a fundamental fallacy. At the time of the Vietnam war there were North Vietnamese and South Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese wanted to unify Vietnam on their own terms, and the Southern Vietnamese wanted to maintain the South a separate and independent political entity. The US fought against the North Vietnamese in an attempt to support the South Vietnamese. The North Vietnamese didn't defeat the US.

What they did manage to do is to raise the cost of defending the South of Vietnam to a point where, combined with the other problems of South Vietnam (corrupt government, weak army, etc), it was no longer in the interest of the US to continue support of the South. The US stopped fighting to defend the South in 1972, and South Vietnam was overtaken by the North Vietnamese army in 1975.

The South Vietnamese who fled before the fall of the South, as well as those who fled even 20 years after the fall of the South -- people who were tortured, had relatives killed, lost land and property, denied education and employment, and had escaped to all the corners of the world to avoid life under the Communists, are the remnants of the South Vietnamese culture that was destroyed by the North, and which the US had tried to protect.
