You can create 3D models much faster like that, but it will still only produce a flat texture of video. you would still require to put in eyes, mouth and teeth in order to script it better.
@BassPounderX Because GPUs are specialist hardware. They're meant to do certain types of operations--the ones needed in graphics processing--very quickly, but they're not general purpose. You can't just run arbitrary programs on them. In particular, they CAN have thousands of (relatively weak) cores because each operation can be done without talking to another core (ie, a core handles a single pixel)... with most programs you don't have that luxury.
@imorriso1 but what m saying is why dont they include some sort of instrucion set that can efficiently run within the gpu or work on a cpu with a high amount of cores that can be bought by consumers for a fair price
@BassPounderX It's already possible--if you're clever--to use the GPU for non-graphics tasks, if that's what you're asking. An OS, however, is not involved with the sort of operations that benefit from that. After a certain point, more cores can actually slow down your programs.
@imorriso1 Yes they are general purpose.. One need think very differently to program for them though. You program them with C++ CUDA, OpenACC, opencl, ..ext there are many function programmers got used to that are not available though.
perf per watt and perf per $ can't be ignored.
The next big thing will be the fusion of serial and parallel in asymmetrical processors. Nvidia and Microsoft are working in that direction, and with AMD's new graphics core + fusion.
can't see any application for this except for in larger devices such as in, for example, TVs. It will never be possible to shrink it down and incorporate it into a phone though, because the cameras have to be so far apart for this to work (as they need to see the sides of your face). In fact, you'd even need an exeptionally large TV for it to be possible. So at the moment, I don't see how this can be used smoothly. Great advance though, can't wait to see where it leads!
@goomee3d Well, like Dr. Michio Kaku, I am a futurist and would fancy awesome technology, but I have a feeling you are the typical nerd, there is a world currently outside of Star Wars, and Japan, I am not sure if you have noticed, that's all :)
Thank you Japan for contributing to the Big Brother problem. I thought USA was the biggest incarceration country but with this jump in facial recognition tech all countries can now have their citizens afraid to go outside.
@sen3d People in England can't go outside with out being videotaped. people in China can't have a conversation on the net with out their info being handed over to their goverment. To a much lesser extent there roads I don't travel on any more because of photo enforcement. and this is just another tool that's going to be used against it's citizens.
@VladCPP It's a lot easier for a computer to tell people apart when it can understand the actual 3D shape of a person's face. A 2D image works sometimes, but this provides more useful information.
there is a missing layer of software(Object learning)... Making a high resolution composite of the many frames of data. With the high data set you could interpolate more detail and fill in holes.
This system will work in bright daylight and is less twitchy then kinect, but other then that? Kinect is also missing the same software.

@MustNotRead not to sound racist but it is kind of true.. its because white people are the most creative/inventive race and asains brains are more mathematically based, white people usually come up with the ideas asains perfect them
well, they are indeed "good at" practical mathematics (ie: 2+2 = 4) and carrying out predetermined sequences of operations. but they are not good at all areas of mathematics. there are many areas of math which require creativity - purely theoretical mathematics.
they basically are very good at copying what we define for them.
@MustNotRead which is why all the great mathematically based experimental physics leaps are mainly made by white people lol, hard to not sound racist but its like one of the things thats kinda true for race.. like black people will always own at basketball... they just do
@MustNotRead your evidence is ratially biased as science has been used to define bigotry for many years, see nazi's (and any scientist who claims superiority is somehow genetically based) and for someone like me who has a degree in neuroscience from the university of washington, who is a leader in the field, that both you and chuck norris haven't the faintest clue how the human brain functions biologically and are horribly confusing sociology's worst errors with basic science
No, my evidence is based on the names and people who have _invented_ the technology. I do not see names such as "Ying" and "Yang" credited in _any_ field of science.
And, btw, I have a degree too. A degree in CS and I have studied a fair amount of neuro-science, human behaviour and rational logic due to my professional interest in Artificial Intelligence. Degrees are not "special" here in the West, they're commonplace.
Japan is a country of Science and Innovation ..... But for some reason even though they are really good at this stuff, yet they are not anywhere near rich....If they were.....We might be living in space colonies right now haaha
@SlowRkers Shockingly Japan has very few things to say in the information industry.Inside a toyota, a PS3 or even the Asimo is an IBM central processing unit. The same IBM it's inside the chevrolet, bmw, xbox, to save costs. The market decides how smart you are, where you live, not the japanese. What you see here, voxels, gpgpu and nvidia hardware were all developed outside Japan. The japanese will play the game if it brings revenue wich is the really smart way to play.
@bighands69 I suggest you to get informed: WIPO patents difference between the US and Japan (which country is far from which?). And I also suggest you to research about your military technology in the US, another surprise is coming.
@Festivejelly Thats not true :T Japan is one of the most populated places on earth per square kilometer, the richest countries are The Netherlands, and Norwich
@psychoscout1 The Netherlands is a tiny country and while it has a high GDP per capita. Its total GDP is a drop in the Ocean compared to Japan. The Netherlands doesnt even break a trillion dollars, where as Japan surpasses 5. So where as per person the Netherlands is "richer" this is usually due to inconsitancy because it has such a small population. Excluding people earning more than 1 million dollars Japans average wage is higher.
Japan, is known for improving European and American products, we allow Japanese to commercialize our inventions, the TV is not Japanese, The Mobile Phone is not Japanese, the GPU is not Japanese the CAR is not Japanese the Engines not Japanese, etc
the only reason people don't like Chinese because they mass produce faulty products that break down, while the Japanese like the Chinese mass produce western products but more towards our standards.

You could use like a Time of flight to optimize this reducing some of the calculations.
