I had this on record back in 1987. I remember it had the words to the songs & heaps of pics of Jonathan. hehe. Bring back real music like this please!!!
@terbynn You're so right, I thought I was the only one who caught on :) Timeless classic and I certainly hope Beyonce and co acknowledged this outstanding man's talent. They'll probably deny it but those of us who are old enough know better!
Mr Butler a legened in the eyes of Many Capetonians and South Africans alike.... This song was released the year I was born and was raised to his music....Sooooooo cant wait to see him live in February!!!!!!!! Gonna be one awesome night
It sounds a bit like Love On Top, because LOT is an homage to all these 8o's style songs. Its in the same mould, as with stevie wonder, Whitney and such legends.
@terbynn. Yes I made the same comment on Bs single as well. Lols 1st time i heard it, It reminded me of this song. Although, i thought it was from the 90s. Didnt realise it was from the late 80s. Awesome song, very soul filled.
Clearly this and Love On Top sound familiar but after all the samples Ive heard in my life this one clearly wasnt used for Love On Top...they are similar but not enough. Some elements are similar but we could find similar elements in millions of works..
Sounds like you haven't seen Shakira ( Beonce's twin sister ) . they have a similar body type and Shakira also copied white people's hair and regularly copies black people's songs and claim as hers . A place in the sun based on meritocracy NOT !
Clearly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This does not soud like Love On Top like wth!!! Oh and Beyonce didnt write Love on Top, so how could she be "stealing?" And shout out to the hopeless and lonely Beyonce "hater" who stayed up until midnight looking for something to say that she copied...BRAVO!!!!
Remember Cassingles? I bet I played this song 1,000 times in my 1987 Nissan Sentra...LOL! Does anyone remember the B-Side of the cassette single to this song? All I remember is that it was an instrumental that showed of his classical jazz guitar...simply amazing!
@MrSamckone I actually purchased the album on cassette back in the day. Problem was with most cassettes that played over 40mins had less wear as the reel with the most tape would usually jam resulting in an emergency cellotape repair of cutting a fews secs of music. Those were the days.... lmao
@terbynn I agree with you. I mention this song to my friend's and they look at me like I am nuts. As they have no idea about Mr. Jonathan Butler. They don't know good music. I was 8 when this came out and it's still one of my all time favorite songs!!!!
@terbynn omg!!! when i heard it, in the back of my head, im like "humm this reminds me of lies" lol....wonder if its just the style....both are bad ass!!! xoxo
if i hear another justin bieber diss im gonna scream....im not a fan of his...but lil white dude can sing....can we just enjoy old school like this and just leave it here without comparing whats out now....there was a bunch of crap out back then too.....rememeber all the prince copy cats ?
I am from Edenvale,Johannesburg i used to follow his music for those who remember at the New York club in Brixton,Jhb back in the early 80`s what a new wave those days were.Music saw us through back then...L.O.V.E.done it bro..
@scbaileySA Not a Reply but a question.... He and Sade are both from Africa The young back up singer in the yellow jacket looks alot like Sade, Just wondering if it her.
amazing. i remember seeing him at hammersmith odeon i think about 1985 ish, and if i remember courtney pine was the support act. great night, quaility music.
They really had some good music back in that time. I hope and pray that next year we get some music like this on the radio again, and doing WELL at that. Because clearly this current years' music is just an extension of the last decade...
Over 20 years ago, with an anticipation, expectation and fear of starting a new life as a college student in the US, I watched MTV in a cheap motel room in Rochester, NY. and this was playing. Later when I went back to Japan for a short time, I caught him live in Tokyo. He was much smaller man than I thought, but with full of music. After 20 years since then, the weird this is that I understand the lyrics!
