wow, i grew up in the 80's and never heard of them---damn I could have used them back them I did a lot of drugs and drank more booze than WC fields. Hmmm I guess thats why I guess I never heard of them or remember anything between 83 and 88.
Used to be a program on (what was then called) Rocket 107.5 in Houston in the late hour called "Dave's Closet". I learned alot of my basics there ( ThePixies, SonicYouth, PeterSchilling, etc.) and this was the first song I had ever heard from TheChurch. Was instantly hooked, next day I found the Starfish album in a pawn shop for 2 bucks. Still in my CD book today.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."

@noelshao That is so cool that in addition to being an accomplished musician he is also a good guy. I "just liked" this song when it was current but now think it is one of the best songs ever.
@CJARCHIVES not just steve. All of members in Church are unbelievable nice.I got all of their's signatures and photos except Tim,cuz Tim is kinda of mystic and I have no chance to meet them. When I asked them to sign for me, they even asked my Chinese name. Steve recognised me in Milton and call me "my friend from homebake". Man, I feel so flattered. I'm so lucky that I saw them 3 times before I back to China, that's my best gig memory!
This is one of those songs that just infects me. I always have to start it over after a minute or so because I feel like I'm not giving it the attention it demands. Love that riff.
Special band is right! These guys are absolutely amazing, kind of like a hidden jewel. I've seen them 4 times over the years in Philadelphia, every time they were simply amazing. Every Album has special memorable tracks on it. Love this band so much!
It's easy to figure out who dislikes this. 39 reptiles that were dumped by the lead singer in the 80's. :) I dare say this song is ... perfect. My dad always use to play this in the house, along with some other great music. I was lucky he didn't like disco.
i still got the "tape" at home somewhere...wore it out on this song i reckon,..an now i've discovered it "again" i cant stop friggin playing it..fkn love this..(i will be finding the tabs or learning it by ear..cant wait to unveil this weapon on an unsuspecting audience)lol
I always loved the guitars in this song! This is my fav Church album out of so many that are great ! I saw these guys in Cleveland around the time this came out and they were so good. tight, energetic, trippy. I remember being dissapointed that they didn't play Metropolis for some reason that night.
@davidleegoth Yeah they kind of peaked out with radio play with Under the Milky Way from this LP. I think it was the end of the original twin guitar setup with Copes and Wilson-Piper. They are still around in one form or another.
Desde la decada del setenta que vengo escuchando rock y metal y como puede ser que me haya perdido esta banda!!!! Excelente!!!! que buena musica, sin tanta opulencia o tecnisismo, eso es tambien talento!!!!
ah...The church at their "pinup" best....I notice Peter still has same guitar but I'm sure Marty and Steve are probably kicking themselves about some of their "lost" guitars....and ploogy looking all sweet and innocent driving just ahead of the beat as he was always famous for. This song still stands the test of time!
this is what 80's music is about, not this bullshit Rap ass music they play today... great vest with button downs and long hair....... saw them in Newport Beach California
It is known that some of the best riffs of all time are extremely simple and I always thought this one just stands out as a thing of beauty! Sticks in your head and you can't get it out!

Loved this song when I was younger and much more innocent...I have a deeper appreciation for it after being in relationship like this song. Wow! The power of music and the lyrics behind them - It moves me still and has a more profound impact now.
@mkmont697 I couldn't agree with you more! I remember hearing this when i was 17 at clubs. Now the song is still beautiful but even has a deeper routed meaning to me.

@mingledust They have a devout audienece world-wide, albeit smaller now. All bands popularity waxes & wanes. Look at R.E.M. "Losing My Religion" brought on millions of new fans who can't give a rat's ass about them now. Their new album might sell a million if they are lucky. Aborigines. Hopi, Cherokee all knew about what Christians believe to be the damned or fallen angels. It doesn't lose meaning really. It's all how you read into it. None of these are ignorant folklores but just the way they were told so intelligence by nature but to people who lead simple lives could understand. Much of it is literal but much of it were spoken in parables. Translation: We truly are not alone. If you think this is about a woman and sex guess again. read their other song titles
@BettinaBalser There is a lot of amazing 80's music and this is a sharp kick in the ass of bad "80's" music collections of insipid pop. The 80s were by no means as insipid as the present.
One of the most insane nights of my life was spent outside the ANU (Australian National University) bar listening to these guys. We were that poor that we couldn't afford to get in like all of the other poor students could, but we could hear these great songs thrumming through the walls of the place as we sat at the outside tables. One of our number (not me) was absolutely tripping off his head, and we were just laughing at the place he was in at that moment. And didn't those melodies just soar.
there are maybe a handful of bands in the last 30 years which could have created this song. And the only one which jumps out at the moment, is Radiohead. I know there are others, but the list is wonderfully short.
Brilliant song, fookin' brilliant. Possibly the most underrated under-appreciated band ever.
Lol i was watching the 2010 ARIA hall of fame when the church got inducted they were brilliant and their speech was hilarious..i reckon steve kilbey should host the ARIAs next year...
I found this video about 2 weeks after it was uploaded onto YouTube, and I think I must have played it hundreds of times since then. This song is so excellent, I just can't get enough of it. Thank you for the awesome video!

I think these guys knew "Starfish" would be
their first and last successful album
in the way they raised their standards
way up too high to make anything better
in their style of music, so they gave their best
with songs like "Under the Milky Way", "Blood Money",
"North South East and West" and "Reptile"...
the whole album is a precious gem in rock music
and definitely a rare collectors item...

Much of it is literal but much of it were spoken in parables. Translation: We truly are not alone. If you think this is about a woman and sex guess again. read their other song titles

Starfish is one of the best albums of the 80s, if not THE best album of the 80s. So underrated, it's not even funny.

@trapper439 What a great venue the ANU refactory was in the late 1970s / early 1980s.

my favourite Church song. 80s were awful for clothes and hair.. but for Aussie music there will never be a better decade

there are maybe a handful of bands in the last 30 years which could have created this song. And the only one which jumps out at the moment, is Radiohead. I know there are others, but the list is wonderfully short.
Brilliant song, fookin' brilliant. Possibly the most underrated under-appreciated band ever.

I found this video about 2 weeks after it was uploaded onto YouTube, and I think I must have played it hundreds of times since then. This song is so excellent, I just can't get enough of it. Thank you for the awesome video!
