How awesome would a BBC Question Time format be in America, had Hitchens been in the chair? (Oh that's right - the gaping chasm between elected and electorate means no one would get to host that programme.)
I'm sure you already know this but it bears worth repeating : Hitch thought very little of Diana and the surrounding fanaticism. (Of course, the fact that he finds Maggie Thatcher "sexy" should make us question HIS tastes as well.)
@TheConciseStatement- I know exactly how he feels about Diana. But do I have to agree 100% with all of his beliefs in order to admire or support him? I'm more appalled by his support of the Iraq War than his nastiness towards Diana. He says JFK shouldn't be considered a hero because JFK led us into Vietnam, and yet one of his personal heroes is Jefferson, who had hundreds of slaves.
Yep, Iraq is the big blot on the record. Wrong time, wrong justification, wrong administration - his intentions are noble but he got into bed with a very bad crowd. He's also a bit pro-life too, which is a little disappointing for a 'bleeding heart liberal' such as myself.
The best & perhaps only way to help poor people is to give them the opportunity to get a good education & job training so they can get a good job that can support them self & their family. Another way is to create jobs & keep taxes down so people & business's have the resources to hire people. Helping poor people or any person shouldn't be judged on how much money Government spends on it but how many people it helped & how many of those people made it to the Middle Class.
@FrsBigeasy - The first thing we need to do is give EVERYONE a better education than what they have at the moment. With such an education, this question wouldn't need to be asked: "Helping poor people or any person shouldn't be judged on how much money Government spends on it but how many people it helped & how many of those people made it to the Middle Class."
There wasn't a real middle class in America before 60 years ago AND it was created mainly via government programs.. to continue..
1. GI bill for poor young men to go to university and start businesses
2. Housing bills/loans/programs to build housing in the suburbs
3. Highway infrastructure to make living outside of the city feasible
4. Public education
Let's get real. The middle class has forgotten that it was poor without government intervention and it (forgetting) has created the downfall of the middle class.
great left wing rant by Hitch at 4:50 trust, my favourite bolshevik

Class warfare against division of labor diversity is just a criminal tactic to attempt to legitimize criminal mob coercion.

CH tries to give them a genuine devils advocate but they're so unuse to any intellectual push back that they don't know how to respond.
