My personal favorite graphics for any of the news channels are CNN's graphics. I like the News ticker. My favorite MSNBC graphics were the graphics in 2003 when the logo was in the bottom right over top a ticker. I love these though.
Having spent a little more time with the new look, I think you're right. Switching from grey to black text and slowing down the pace just a little would make a huge difference.
They weren't in HD yet, were they? I don't quite recall...

Great new look. Love the new audio package, also. All around, I think this is the classiest news channel presentation in N. America.
