I love the era of "Cafe Society"... the music... the cars... the style and elegance. Too bad someone can't figure out how to recreate a classy meeting place like Sherman Billingsley's "Stork Club"... Billy Rose's "Backstage Club"... Helen Morgan's "Chez Morgan"... Texas Guinan's "300 Club"... Jack & Charlie's "21 Club" ... et cetera. --- I could do it if I had enough money.
Inncorrect comment below that Lucille Ball and Ann Sothern were in the chorus of this picture; Ann was a BIG STAR in her own films by 1933 and Lucille Ball worked for another studio at that time.
@FarnhazenBrep - Too bad Tex drank that bad WATER ( ironic that it wasn't bad hootch! ) in late 1933. I think she would have remained a presence and influence in '30's and '40's films.
"Where they spend their semolians Just to watch those Creolians Skippin', hippin' Doin' the Uptown Lowdown You'll find laughter after midnight That's their playtime Hi-de-hi-de-hey-time What bright gay time Bankers with their Cinderella-tives Listenin' to those hot high-yaller-tives Up in Harlem Doin' the Uptown Lowdown!"
That is an amazing outfit!! That lady with the black dress and dramatic feathers, now that's a dress! You may call me crazy, but that dress is genius, that's just what I love and love looking for, those dramatic, but in my opinion, glamorous and elegantly sophisticated outfits no one could top!
Beginning in 1926, Dewey Barto and George Mann formed the comedy dance team of Barto & Mann, the comedy dancers in this clip. They were headliners throughout the late 20s and 30s, increasingly sharing the stage with motion pictures. As vaudeville wound down in the 30s, they performed in the Broadway show, Hellzapoppin from 1938 to 1942. Barto & Mann broke up as a team in December 1943.
I always wondered what Texas Guinan looked and sounded like.Wow she was exactly what I imagined. The costume, the jewels, the wisecracks.A real showstopper!
For another great clip of Francis Williams, do You Tube search for "Art Deco Telephone Operators do Jazzy number" ... wild pre-code lyrics. Part of that number was used in THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT Part 1.
Barto & Mann. Dewey Barto and George Mann, known as the laugh kings of vaudeville in the 20s and 30s. Their comedic, acrobatic dance act played on their disparities in height; Barto was 4 ft 11 in. and Mann was 6ft. 6 in.
Would have loved to hang out with Texas, George Raft, Mark Hellinger and so many others at El Fey's nightclub - the granddaddy of the speakeasies..I was meant to live in those days...
What a pleasure to hear Texas Guinan, NYC's most famous nightclub emcee - "The Queen of the Night Clubs" just a few months before her untimely death on November 5, 1933. Wonderful! Just wonderful!!
Isnt this the film Al Jolson got angry about and hit someone, due to the strong similarity between the plot and Ruby Keelers life?Do you have the "you were the girl on the scooter" number from the film?
Many thanks for this clip! Texas is a riot, Frances Williams rocks to Gordon & Revel, and scary Paul Kelly looks like someone you don't want to cross..... He just might kill you!
Paul Kelly was convicted of murder or manslaughter and served a long time and then resumed his career. I think he killed his wife's lover. He was quite tall in real life.
where can I get moe movies of the speakeasies?careygordon

Oh, yes. Thank goodness we have some of these people on film. A notorius real-life >female< speakeasy owner living life her way in the 1920s and 30s.

TEXAS GUINAN was a NY original. She had her own club in NY - her customers were "suckers". Thanks for posting.
