Nicola Porpora (1686-1768): Salve Regina In F for Alto and strings.
Countertenor: Michele Andalò. Played and recorded some years ago by Italian baroque ensemble "Cappella Teatina" conducted by the organist Saverio Villa. Actually the name of the ensemble is "Animantìca".
@hustler01 Um tell me how you suppose that when micheal jackson didn't even sing opera??? There is NO way his voice was remotely close to a castratos. not even anywhere near a similar comparison.
They have some recordings of the last castrato, Alessandro Moreschi to use, so it's not like they have nothing to go on. Granted the recordings are very old but the voice doesn't sound like anything special to me
An informative vlideo, e.g., revealing that the great Farinelli was lonely and desired love in his last years. I imagine that he would be suprised that the beginning used the voice of Genaux: her voice is the antithesis of a castrato voice, sliding and warbling. We may not know precisely the castrato sound, but there is much good evidence - written records from experts, Baroque conservatory training methods, medical/voice research, male sopranos, and the better countertenors and sopranists.
Broschi's depression is well-known and written about by many authors. And any woman's voice will be an antithesis of a true castrato as the physiology is completely different; moreso due to the changes brought on by the loss of testosterone and the training the boys were put through to develop their chest/rib cages. To get a similar idea, watch talented boys in boy choirs who are very close to puberty. They won't have the same strength/control, but tonality will be as close as possible.
Watching the film... Half way through - that countertenor in the church has a very nice but dark sound. this is nothing at all like recordings of the sistine chapel choir from 1902 and 1904 - including at least two castrati on the quartet recording.
Yuck. It is so misleading to use a countertenor to represent the castrato sound. Now imagine the people that saw this and thought- "Huh! That's what a castrato sounded like!" tsk tsk
The huge problem with the computerized, approximated results is that they started with a countertenor and a female soprano whose sound, technique, and vibrato were a far cry from written accounts of the actual castrato sound. They overlooked using the amazing countertenor Andreas Scholl and a much better soprano such as Maria Cristina Kiehr or Gundula Janowitz. The results would have been much more accurate and much more beautiful.

maybe they should have used a countertenor and a MALE soprano for the voices in the movie. I think that would have been closer.
