godsrightarm, that rule is when there are two or three third tones in a row. in that case, the first 3rd tone (and second, if there are 3 third tones in a row) changes to second. ni3hao3= ni2hao3. if there are 4 third tones in a row, the tones change to 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd.
Your stuff is really good. Thank you for going to all this trouble. Just one thing. Make your bed, for God's sake! What is your poor mother going to think when she sees that mess?
In English, the tonal changes change the *implication* of the word, but not the meaning, like "yes" or "yes?" [The first is a falling tone (4) and the last is a rising tone (2).] Does the tonal change in putonghua actually make it a *different word* altogether?
In other words, do I have to be *very* careful with the tones, or will native speakers generally understand what I'm saying, even if I use English-like tones?
To add to this, remember the first tone which is flat, is also always high! In your high register voice. The second rises from mid to high, the third dips to low and back up to around the middle register, then the fourth starts up around the high level and drops down sharp to low.
dude. you're too uptight. that puts her one step closer to being the perfect girl. it shows she's relaxed, and that there are other more important things to do.
Woa! This was the best explanation I ever got in chinese tones!
I'm so grateful, because I'm starting my mandarin lessons next month and I'm trying to learn some things on the internet, but found the tones so difficult to understand until I saw your vid!
Your profile says you've been born and raised in Shanghai... so you've never lived in the States? Wow! I was convinced you were American. lol. Your English is amazing. Thanks for these great videos. I particularly enjoyed the one about the teenager-isms. 我的女朋友-她也是户妹-主在六年纽约,你的英语她比更好!嘻嘻,你真的很可爱。谢谢。
Xie xie nin Diana laoshi! You have done very well with your explanation on pinyin. For English-speaking people like me, pinyin would come as a big relief trying to learn to speak Mandarin Chinese. Keep up with the excellent work! I could sense your commitment in your videos. By the way, are a teacher? Warmest regards, Lee KS
Hi, Thank you for this. Hope to have more lessons on Pin Yin, your explanations and examples are easy to understand. Where do you live, actually; US or chinese speaking country? Regards

I thought if two identical tones followed each other, as in ni hao, the first was dropped? As in, ni hao3 instead of ni3 hao3.

I learned that "ni" is spoken with an up tone (ní), when it comes before "hao".
Flimmerjung 4 years ago
I agree, it can certain sound that way. I was never taught that in school but I definitely see your point. ;-)
carpediem4utube 4 years ago
@Flimmerjung my chinese teacher taught me that this year! she said it was because two 3rd tones sound weird together or something xD
