I have since child hood. If you press slightly on you eyeballs with your fingers when this is happening, all sorts of shapes come to life, but it gets to be painful after a while. I never thought of them as fractals though. It feels that way because these images have to travel down your optic nerve. The stimuli occurs on the retina but the brain makes whatever he wants out of each signal that comes down that axon you know...
