I love this record. It doesn't try and pretend to be anything more than what it is. A madman's insane genius ramblings transcribed by his scared shitless band.
Calling this, calling ANY of Beefheart's music "shit" is to do an immense disservice to feces. His catalog is totally without merit on any level. Noise, impenetrable, grating, utterly worthless.
@libertyhopeful18 Don't give up hope. I think most people who love this record have an initial reaction of distaste or confusion but with an idea that they will someday treasure it. Keep listening, read the lyrics, read the Mike Barnes biography and listen to the vocal-less outtakes on Grow Fins. If you want to love it, you eventually will. It's one of the most beautiful records I know.
@libertyhopeful18 To 'get' Trout Mask Replica, I think the key is to realise that it is about expression rather than technical form. As intricate as the musical patterns are (for Beefheart's music is certainly not just random noise, as it may initially sound), they in themselves are not the reason he was a genius. Listen to it when you're in an 'extreme' mood, e.g. depression, anxiety, alienation from society. His music truly starts to reach you at times like that, or at least it did for me.
@MoralNihilism i've finally got it. i listened to the bassline. that thing is holding the entire song together like super glue. its fantastic. that's the first thing i noticed. all i can picutre listening to this is a big band on the edge of a cliff. and it feels like the cliff is gonna give and everything is just gonna crash and fall apart. but that some magical force is holding that cliff up (hey one guy told me to surround myself with weirdos, this is just the fruit of that)
hey anyone love the band US maple? the closest any band has ever come to the zaniness of beefheart...imagine beefheart & his magic band on quaaludes with tuberculosis. thats what US maple sounds like
If there were 1000 bands producing this music then it would be commercial. Music you like is merely music that consists of the sounds you've heard before. This is why, for example, many commentators, Matt Goering included, speak of liking this after the first few plays despite their initial "WTF?!?" reaction.
In a sense, you are correct. However, when the word "commercial" is thrown around, it could mean one of two things. A) anything that is mainstream, status quo or B) something produced for the sole purpose of making money. If you are referring to (A), then you'd be completely right, but don't forget the second definition. This music was made just to be made. After all, words are nothing more than syllabic incarnations, we put our own meanings into them. That's how poetry works.
@TBTOCI I will not be commenting on this any further. If you plebeians wish to continue with this malarkey than so be it. I would recommend you stop and attempt to listen to the music, if that isn't lost on you.
PS - What I think about Radiohead (or anything else for that matter) is what I think, so for you to assume I'd "answer" for it is your folly.
@TBTOCI To answer your question, there is in fact nothing to get. That's the point of this kind of music, it doesn't have to mean anything. One shouldn't listen to this album because it's on a bunch of pretentious lists, nor should one listen to this because they think it's some sort of zen revelation. One should listen to this simply because they like it.
friends, why are we arguing. Who cares about Radiohead right now, this a Beefheart video, and a dam good one. Arguing about what "avant garde" means is fucking dumb, just listen to the music and everyone keep their asshole opinions to themselves
This album sounded just bad at first. But then I read the lyrics and then everything else sounded good to me. IF people can make out what hes saying then they will see the words are beautifully bizarre lyrics. Very well written.
The only way to appreciate this is to turn off the sane hal--...quarter of your brain. Mine's already a narcoleptic anyway...it's now hiding and said it's never coming back. What has it ever done for me, anyway?
Deeper and more sophisticated than anything you will hear today. This is truly creative brilliantly written and played!!! Has anybody ever done anything like this? You know it's Beefheart the second you hear it, right?
I mixed a few songs onto a cassette way back when and after Ella Guru I put Don't Worry Baby from the Beach Boys. It just seemed to work out beautifully. Beefheart to Beach Boys. A real spectral shift.
First time I heard thiis, I felt the same as others here, disgusted. However once you conquer the whole "music doesn't sound like this" phase, you start opening your mind to the abstract beauty that shines through this music. Well, that's just me.
@witchdoctor66 Who are you to decide whats art and whats not? Thats such an arrogant approach to music. Quit being conceited and leave us fans of common sense alone
@witchdoctor66 Dude, Radiohead is the epitome of music as an art. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they listed Captain Beefheart as an influence.
@witchdoctor66 You've got an unusual idea of what avant garde art is. The phrase means "keeping forward", and implies a deliberate attempt to create something original, like the first Velvet Underground record or Buckethead's re-imagining of the shred guitar technique...and of course, Captain Beefheart's approach to the Blues. Your description sounds like that of "outsider art", like Daniel Johnston playing an organ and banging on something to keep time because that's all that's available.
@witchdoctor66 Arrgghh I knew you'd shoot down Buckethead (listen to "Somewhere over the Slaughterhouse"). What about the rest of my last comment, though? Seriously, "Keeping forward" is the literal translation. It has nothing to do with it being unintentional. And what the hell is this "hipster appeal" thing you're talking about? Do you really think Radiohead went into the studio and said "Let's make music that appeals to hipsters"? That, my friend, is sheer delusion.
@Hexachloraphine Just did. That was, um, painful, but what are saying? That sting instruments made to sound like malicious screaming space ghosts is so advanced that it renders all discussion of music null and void?
@witchdoctor66 Radiohead is a pop band, they aren't trying to be experimental. The fans are ones who credit it as being something avant-garde. At the same time you can't dismiss them just because they aren't avant-garde, it's just as ridiculous as dimissing something that does break the norm and is avant-garde.
@witchdoctor66 you obviously dont know anything about music if you think the beatles are mediocre/overrated. their music had incredible depth, composition wise, and lyric wise. paul mccartney is a music theory beast.
@witchdoctor66 artistic illiteracy is failing to see past the context of this "banal teen pop group" and see real depth and meaning to the work. but whatever, it's your loss.
@witchdoctor66 thats also a pretty shjtty reply for when youre bested in an argument. if you consider "shut the fuck up" a piece of advice, then i suggest you take your own advice
@otherside65 what depth is there in the Beatles music. It's shallow as fuck, the Beatles did nothing different from what every other pop band, but get praised as if they changed the way people hear music
@fat8622 it was unique in its compositon, not to mention more complicated than the average rock band. the genius in it is that it was polished enough into a rock pop context to be likeable to the average listener. polished, of course , in the beatles taste. Listen to "michelle" listen to the chords and how they progress
@fat8622 ignore my argument. i saw your "beatles suck" video. youre just biased against them because of their popularity. ill give you that some people overrate them, but many others underrate them as well
@otherside65 I have no problem with a band's popularity if I feel they deserved it. I don't think the Beatles deserved, it was the Kinks who deserved all that lavish praise. Ray Daveis was a genius, far greater than any of the Beatles could have ever hoped to be (especially fucking Ringo)
@witchdoctor66 Let me get this straight. According to you, those who don't get it should go listen to Radiohead, because in your opinion RH is nothing but "faux avant-garde" Brit pop which sucks balls. But yet when this opinion of yours is challenged, you defend yourself by saying "Meaning is subjective, meaning there are no "right" or "wrong" choices." So which is it? Either you are right and all the actually intelligent people hate RH, or you're just another pretentious asshole.
@KarnivorousKreecher Listen, all I was saying was if you don't like this album and are going to come here and bash it then save yourself the time and effort and just listen to whatever you normally enjoy. I didn't assume (which is my own shortcoming) that people would be so incapable of understanding a comical comment that a giant retarded argument would begin. Meaning is subjective, and if you like Radiohead that's fine. I personally don't which is why I used them as an example, that's all.
@rsl84416 I'd really like to get it, but don't. And I'm a musician. To me, it's along the lines of Zappa. So deep, that it's disjointed. Without offending anyone, to each his own.

Ella Guru - Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band [Glendale, California] - 1970 - "AMG Pick. One of his more 'accessible' songs with 3-cord Garage Rock guitar riffs and notable vocals. It almost has a Jazzy feeling at times." - Trout Mask Replica (Reprise)-1989.
@superkulmedkniv25 Well maybe you are right but I do not live in the most musically cognizant town and we have no local record store just big corporations like F.Y.E. and Walmart. ANd unfortunately Itunes doesn't carry it.
@Nugugerube well, i live in Norway, and i found it in the largest record-corporation of the country. I go to the record store just about every week to listen to music, and normally they don't have much Beefheart. One day they suddenly had the record though. In all the record-stores i know of, theres also the option of having the store order the record for you. This may not be the case for you, but theres always online stores and ebay etc. Well, good luck anyway.

@addylewis lol, oasis are gay, only ugly people who deserve to be murdered like them. Wonderwall should be called diarheawall, because it's diarhea not wonder. Well, some of the stuff from Be Here Know was alright, but everything else is EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL. Fuck Oasis

Je ne l'avais plus écouté dpuis des années, mais il a été l'un de mes modèles musicaux au début des années 70. Quel grand artiste!!!

Where can one individual buy such an album as this?
Nugugerube 1 year ago
@Nugugerube I found it in a normal record store. This album is highly acknowleged you know.
superkulmedkniv25 1 year ago
@superkulmedkniv25 Well maybe you are right but I do not live in the most musically cognizant town and we have no local record store just big corporations like F.Y.E. and Walmart. ANd unfortunately Itunes doesn't carry it.
Nugugerube 1 year ago
@Nugugerube well, i live in Norway, and i found it in the largest record-corporation of the country. I go to the record store just about every week to listen to music, and normally they don't have much Beefheart. One day they suddenly had the record though. In all the record-stores i know of, theres also the option of having the store order the record for you. This may not be the case for you, but theres always online stores and ebay etc. Well, good luck anyway.

@drsloan Yeah, he looks like Admiral Ackbar, the fish-like Rebel commander who leads the attack against the second Death Star in "Return Of The Jedi". "It's a trap!"
RIP Captain Beefheart
