They don't have more variety on their shots, just slugging out each other from the baseline and hitting power shots one after the other. That's why it's fun to watch these girls match up with Stosur & Justine.

@GrimmsterINC LOL.Not all professional tennis players has variety. Not having a variety means players that has one-dimensional game. One dimensional means the shots are basically has the same pace and most are from the baseline. If you would noticed Henin, Stosur, Federer, Mauresmo, HIngis, Murray these pro could come to the net to finished points. They vary their shots top-spin or flat. They have sound volley and different shot selection. I'm not just judging. It's a fact.

Fact is the WS don't need more variety in their game. Not to say they don't have variety, you will not see players like these two that try to finish the points at the net. They are perfectly fine hitting opponents off the court. Stosur on the other hand has a non existant backhand that is why she runs around it and prefers her forehand

@donlyjeronimo I'm not saying they need variety. They have their own game style. If you're saying they don't need it, that's your opinion. But I disagree that Stosur's backhand is non-existent. In fact, Stosur's backhand slice would break Serena's pace at the 2011 US Open finals if you would notice it. And not only Stosur has a fine effective slice, she can also hit a two handed backhand flat & with great power. That's an example of variety.

shame the crowd seems so subdued...i would have loved to have been there! the williams sisters are such an asset to the game. i remember getting interested in women's tennis during their rise, it was so infectious watching their game and following their successes.

serena was playing some ridiculous tennis..this was not her 2002 level..this is more..serena has a hell of a lot more court intelligence..she knows when to hit flat..topspin..slice..even though shes heavier than 2002..her footing is exceptional

The crowd is so dead here. If this match were anywhere else, the stadium would have been rocking! I think this match along with their Wimbledon final in '08 are two of the highest quality matches they have played against each other. As they have gotten older, it's all business now. They can go out there and let it all hang - the matches keep getting better and better!

Venus has all the physical abilities that Serena has except serena's serve doesn't break down.

Now what separates them the most is their mental toughness, Serena knows that she can and will win even if she faces match points that is why she doesn't lose to others that don't outplay her. Venus on the other hand is up and down with her mentality, that is why her serve breaks down. Sometimes I wish she would get fired up like her sister does.

@donlyjeronimo I disagree. I think Serena is just faster, more coordinated, stronger. She just doesn't try her hardest often enough. When she does, she's unbeatable. But when she doesn't she gets lazy, impatient, etc.  Serena has all bigger weapons than Venus, other than approach shots IMO.

Wow you know Venus isn't fucking around when you hear no grunting. Am i the only one who thinks Venus at her very best is better than Serena at her best. Because Venus closes the net, hits the lines, and Volleys you off the court. Serena will just hit you off with ground strokes

It seems downright unfair for somebody to lose in a match of this quality! Even though Venus lost here she seemed to be moving and striking the ball better than she had done the whole 2009 season and playing better than she has done so far in 2010.

Terrific match, Venus almost got Serena.

The main theference in this match was Serena's ability to play a much more incisive

cross court forehand than venus. Not the serve (Venus was actually serving huge), not the backhand, but the Forehand.

I know Venus has done inmense progress with both, her forehand and her second serve. And while in her second serve she has found the way to add a lot of kick to it, she defenitely lacks the ability to produce the great angled cross-court forehand.

And like this..they are the number 1 and 2 in the world..no Clijsters, Henin and certainly not the Sharapova, Wozniacki, Jankovic generation could touch them! The Williams, Davenport, Capriati era was so good..

@CountygeneralER Actually, Henin was a part of that same era! She made a wimby final (in 2001), and FO. But I agree. I miss the Williams/Davenport/Seles/Capri­ati/Pierce/Hingis/and Henin era. So many good matches.
