Jim stays the best , i'm 52 and i 've seen a lot of their concerts all around Europa , my best remember was Torhout festival in Belgium and Bercy in 84
They played at the Roskilde Festival 1983 in Denmark, and i remembered that they went on stage saturday morning to do a soundchek, and people came from everywere to listen. droppede their breakfast a went towards the Orange Stage,Charles Burchill the guitarist played some riffs that sounded out of this world. That night they went on stage and turned the hole festival arround and it is still one of the best concert ever to be performed on Roskilde Festival. 27 years gone by but I was there
September 13th 1982 NGD was released.....nearly 30 years later the lyrics, "she is your friend until the bitter end" and "when you dream dreaming the dream with me" still get my emotions flowing like no other lyrics ever had....timeless. Listen to Kerrs voice on the dvd audio version of NGD, it will blow you away.
I can remember the first time I heard this song and I was 25 and it"s very rare for me to love a song the first time I hear it I have The albumn and cd because I could never get sick of it.I feel its a song I will never tire from listening to it.The only other song that had effect on me was Stairway to heaven.
Empire and Dance, Sons and Fascination & New Gold Dream...three classics. After that they went downhill yet got famous! Thats how U2 made it ahead of S.M. & Echo & The Bunnymen...people have CRAP taste!
I can't believe this riff was created way back when. I loved Usura's open your mind till I heard this yesterday...now I can't even listen to any other version.

find ich super das so junge Menschen wie Du solche Musik auch mögen..heut wird ja gecastet wat das zeug hält..aber das ist nicht von dauer...die besten kommen nun mal von der Insel...U2..Depeche mode etc.
A great album...I grew up listening to this album have owned it about three times on vinyl format.....twice on CD....I love the production....Forbes Bass is amazing...its just before Gaynor's insidious thumping drowned out Forbes great work. (Sparkle in The Rain)....They should never have let him into the band!!! Seriously...this album was a great record.
@bluewolfe96 Sorry..with the greatest of respect....disagree completely!! The song was from their best period...by 1986 there was no finese to their songs and they had sold to the yanks....even had a soul singer as their backing singer......and yet 1982...they were fashionable.......trendy...young and full of class....what a tragedy!
Know what you mean its just that i personally like the city of light version because it brings back certain memories of that era.The problem is that most bands sell out when they become popular look at U2, used to love them but after the Joshua tree album they became very mainstream and not as raw as the albums before Joshua. Its a real shame REAL bands dont get the chance to make it in the music industry any more because of the manufactured crap that seems to ooze like a bad puss.

Simple Minds had a sound so big I can only describe it as " cathedral" almost like mid-period Soundgarden tried to achieve. Up on the catwalk is staggering.
i also remember this song,,,i haven't heard it for at least 22 plus years,,then the other day it was on the radio,,,,as soon i heard it i felt back in high school!!

i recall a niteclub called Raw Power ~3 miles North of the Alamo back in '83 - '84. An amazing DJ, "Scox," ,danced to songs he was spinning, like Simple Minds and other enlightened music of the day ... whilst fulfilling his DJ duties. Scott, aka "Scox" was a huge 6'6" ox with avante garde garb' and a flock of new wave artistic types. They breathed life into that dive. I wonder if anyone else recalls those days?
never have a band come from such genius to such a sorry end. were these guys lobotomised in the mid 80's , i dont know. they went from my favorite band to the worst shite on the face of the earth in the space of 3 years !.

every time i come in to work i put this on, it brings back so many good memories, stationed in gibraltar in the 80s simple minds and the chameleons were the bands for me, plus 2and half yrs on the lash oh yes,
New Gold Dream (the Album) is brilliant, I bought it the day it was released way back in the early 80s.. saw them supporting u2 in phoenix park in Dublin in 1983 alongside Big Country and the Eurythmics.. LOL @ Julian TempleHe turned out to become an expert on staniding stones...and fruity to match lol. God, am rambling now.....lol
@mysterywhylay I think Julian Temple is a film director......he smells of damp cabbage, as we all do post 40.....still,could be worse....everyone over 60 smells of Indonesian roadkill.....so something to look forward to....he he......
i remeber listening to this album continually travelling from scotland to devon on a train, this track reminds me of the train on the way to the holiday destination..
every time i come in to work i put this on, it brings back so many good memories, stationed in gibraltar in the 80s simple minds and the chameleons were the bands for me, plus 2and half yrs on the lash and dirty barmaids oh yes,
Spent a few months listening to this album over and over...drinking cheap $7.00 pink wine and getting it on with a horny 17 year old Catholic girl, over and over...more wine...more music...
TO ALL OF YOU WHO LOVE THIS SONG AND HAVEN'T HEARD OF IT BEFORE - GO AND BUY SIMPLE MINDS' DOUBLE ALBUM 'SONS & FASCINATION'. IT WAS, WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BEST ALBUM TO COME OUT OF THE '80S BY A MILE.... YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED - I PROMISE!
I was 7 when I last heard this...I'm 21 now, and heard it today on the radio for the first time in 14 years. The intro hit me like a ton of bricks...the memories of dancing about our front room without a care in the world, the sun shining, my older brother pretending to be too cool to like it :D Happy times... but then how things can change :( this track made me cry like a kid as I realised how precious music like this is; able to freeze perfect moments in musical form forever :') Magic
This album was released in 1982, the same year the first CD player was commercialized. So that will be 30 years ago next year. I still remember it as if it was yesterday. I bought it on vinyl, I played it over and over and over again, it was so beautiful. I might still have that album somewhere up my attic. The amazing thing is, that today after almost 30 years, it still is as beautiful as it was back then.
It is a beautifully produced/conceived/executed album.
It wasn't just the music either, it had something to do with how all the members of the band looked like beautiful young hairless boys. Is that an appropriate appraisal?
Dreamy, bright, no doubt upper middle-class.
Confident. Latest technology at their beck and call.
@spunkets jackiedk- They were actually working class boys brought up in the gritty poor housing estates of Glasgow. There is nothng remotely middle class about these boys.
awesome.

@Sascopa Lovely comment and know exactly what you mean.
I have the same vision back in the 80s when the album came out.
I would have been 11 i think when my brother bought it.
Beautiful track from a legendry album.

@vermeml spot on and well said, the only album that is better by 1% is Dare by the Human League, but this is equal best album of all time

30 Years ago - in all this time i ask myself: were Simple Minds inspired by the Soundtrack of "Catpeople" or Girogio Moroder in the ohter way...

Its beautiful.
spunkets 7 months ago
@spunkets jackiedk- They were actually working class boys brought up in the gritty poor housing estates of Glasgow. There is nothng remotely middle class about these boys.
