  • 6) (optional) once water runs clean cycle water supply on & off to see if you get new sediment; do this until water run clean. 6) once clean, shut drain valve 7) turn on water supply to water heater ensuring that hot water tap is open to bleed air. 8) shut hot water tap when water runs free of air. 9) Turn on burner or electric 10) observe test 11) You are done. I just did mine on a four year old oil fired heater, water was very clean almost no sediment.

  • Oh if anyone is interested: 1) shutoff burner or electric (IMPORTANT!) 2) shut water supply valve to water heater 3) place garden hose on drain valve and run to nearest area you can discharge the water (out the door, a sump, sink, basin etc...) 4) open hot water tap to allow for venting 5) open drain valve on water heater & observe discharge.

  • Just for "kicks" I called Mr. plumber to ask a question. A simple question asking if the water supply should be on or off when draining, should i drain the entire tank? Their answer, I can send a technician out for a service call... A service call to drain and fill a tank...LOL! They would not answer ANY questions... Their just your good o'l family business.
