The "new hip hop" (in fact the new R&B) is an assault on the minds of our children. The lyrics and implications are insidious. Those holding unprecedented wealth are allowed this in exchange for their willingness to help to maintain the status quo of White priviledge and Black subservience. We all need to learn more about how the subconscious mind collects and stores info and how the info creates perceptions about the world & how we fit in.
Possible solution? destroy every music channel that broadcasts on TV.... let only the music (sound) survive.... lets see who fares well with the public without the visuals !
Because of QTip it's hard to listen to any other hiphop, with exception of a handful. His economy of words, the art of his writing, he is a great genius, who makes beautiful hiphop. It's not so much what he says, or how he says it, but the way each verse and song works as a whole, the way the words fit together, the perspective and attitude behind the words, he makes me happy, he talks to you, not at you, his rhymes are like an arm around your shoulder, a nudge in the back to help you move 4ward
As an irreparable B-Boy,I definitely feel lucky to have grown up in the late 80's--early 90's era;hip hop still has a ton of potential, but right now, shit just ain't the same.
i didnt grow up in the 80's i was born in 93 but i like old shitlike a tribe called quest slick rick KRS 1 because it is better than most of the bullshit on the radio now
He's absolutely right. What he says about hip hop is like what Thom Yorke has said of "Rock Music."
Q is one of a few musicians out there that still really cares about what he does: he raps about life as opposed to desires (cars, clothes, shit we don't need.)
I've grown very selective when I listento hip hop, but when I do, It's always Tribe or De La Soul.
@technologic21 I know the hip hop scene seems desperate right now, but there are still SOME good groups. I mean have you missed The Roots or Nappy Roots? If only bands like that could break into mainstream.
so true. the music industry is goin downhill. There is little substance in so much of what we hear. the artists are manufactured products of a marketing machine. they are told how to look how to sound what to say. there is so little creativity. so much of it is pure fiction.
i love that Q tip is still himseld n hasnt fallen vistim to the commercial brainless cash machine hype. Respect, honour n staying true will c u thru, selling out is copping out x

Etymology: probably from 1swag + -er (as in chatter)
Date: circa 1596 intransitive verb 1: to conduct oneself in an arrogant or superciliously pompous manner ; especially : to walk with an air of overbearing self-confidence
Tip's my boy but he makes these comments in the face of his own forray into commercialism with "vibrant Thing." Tip's is still a legend that nobody can mess wit'. More love.
there is a pretty big difference with having fun and selling out. i think thats why so many people dissed amplified album so much. i honestly wouldn't do something like that if i were him but thats qtip. he was having fun. but another REAL important thing is alot of people never checked that entire album. or they checked it later and said "yeah! j dilla at his finest etc" please...
i think i was the few people back then who was a ie hard ATTQ fan who liked amplified album itself.
The hell with your cars, gold, groupies, swagger, all that mess. It really means nothing when it comes to music. Those are visual things.....how about some audible?
Exactly!..... Image IS music today!...... since when did creativity take the back burner?.....It's sad but Q's mind is what willl make him outlast the rest of them.....
No one can deny good music. No one can deny any art that's incredible, but many times it might not be appreciated financially early on. All Tribe's albums are masterpieces. So they should just concentrate on making good art and forget hating on business people and swagger -- just make good music. Focus on that. I'm just rambling.
i wanna shake q-tip's hand and maybe even make a beat with him, its gonna be hard but its possible!

A function of collective mental anatomy
You cats got it backwards, you say real is wack
And the fake shit, that's GOOD!
Well, keep on fakin (we'll just keep makin)
