  • There's that storyline again at 1.36 where Roger raped Holly. I was 19 at the time and remember how shocking it was to watch this. I think GL moved out of its "grandmother's soap" imagine after this amazing storyline. It earned a daytime emmy for best show in 1980, and because the show stayed so extraordinarily well put together pulled off another win in the best show category in 1982-- just 2 years later. GH on ABC was through the roof during that time also. Daytime was on fire back then!

  • They should have said "Daytime's First Integrated Soap" and show the alumnae that started on the show. Billy Dee Williams, Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones, Ruby Dee, Angela Basset, Sharon Leal, Taye Diggs, Kevin Mambo, and Nia Long.

  • Who's the actress/character at 1:22...the one who says, "Trust?" etc. with Peter Simon (Ed Bauer)?

  • @Joaquin1962 That was Ellen Parker (still alive, so that could be a 'is' not a 'was') who played Maureen "Mo" Reardon Bauer #2 (#1 for that character was Ellen Dolan, 1982 - 86.) That scene was the last time we would see Mo alive in January 1993, at the Bauer cabin, before she ran off and she accidentally ran her car off a cliff during an ice/snow storm. Parker won her Emmy due to those scenes, which was a real shame because Parker had been such a wonderful part of the show since 1986.

  • @sneezyize Parker did make some special appearances after Mo's death, but many GL fans considered her death to mark the beginning of the end for GL (me included) because in her death GL lost it's main tent pole character post Bert Bauer's departure in 1984 and then death in 1986 -- it certainly marked the end for the show of much of the influence of the Bauer family which had been the main family on the show since before it's television debut in 1952 -- they had been on radio since 1947.

  • Who is the cute chubby lady at 1:36?

  • @BeautifulTrainwreyck That lady isn't actually chubby. It's the outfit, blouse she was wearing, fashionable at the time the scene was shot & the way late great Michael Zaslow (Roger Thorpe) was dragging during one of most important (and for many daytime, as well as GL fans) episodes in history of the medium, March 5, 1979 martial rape scene where husband Roger Thorpe raped Holly Norris Bauer Thorpe.

  • @sneezyize Holly was played brilliantly and wonderfully by Maureen Garrett (as Holly from 1976 to 80 and then again from 1988 to 2006 and a two episode return in 2009.)

  • @sneezyize I saw that clip.....why did he rape his own wife?

  • Buzz forever!!!!!

  • I agree, a little too much Reva and Cassie; but that was how the show had gone as well. Too much Reva and Cassie that is.

  • Too much of Reva and Cassie, only one gimps of Maureen and Holly and Vanessa no Ross or Blake, Nick, Jenna or Meta. And Mallet and Marina as face of GL ? Take a look at 1992 GL tribute. That was a master piece!

  • This is good!!! If is the tribute video to top all tribute videos.

  • This is good!!!!

  • Where is Blake!!!! :(

  • @soapinterviews .. thanks for sharing this wonderful tribute. I was born in 1966 but didn't start watching GL until I was a teenager (much to the chagrin of my grandmother who hated soaps operas .. hahaha). I am sad that this wonderful show is gone. :'( I cried when I watched the final episode.

It would be great if the SOAP channel would run GL if they can get either the rights or license to do so. What do you think?

  • WONDERFUL CLIP, TRULY OUTSTANDING! You have to understand the 'powers that be", the Daytime Emmy people had WRITTEN OFF GL at that time. We, "The Fans" were lucky to get ANY KIND of clip to see at all.

    Sir, this is brillant work!

I think it's a CRIME GL, and ATWT are being taken/ have been taken off the air!

I had been a fan of GL since I was 2 years old....not gonna say my age.

I have cried alot about this, and still do.

  • @thekittycollective and now OLTL and AMC will be cancelled as well:( I agree it is a crime. And it doesn't look good for our soaps. I hope that the four remaing soaps that will be left next year, will be on air for a while. GH,DOOL,Y&R,B&B. But sadly I'm not hopeful for the moment. But I hope people realise how amazing soaps are!

  • Guiding Light was truly the best soap opera on TV. I miss it so much. There will never be another show like this one. The only soap left on TV worth watching is As The World Turns. CBS was so wrong to cancel this beloved soap with its rich powerful history.

  • I applaud you because you were given mostly crap to work with, with very little substance.

  • How do you now highlight Beverlee McKinsey's remarkable work as Alexandra Spaulding is beyond me.

  • GL Only provided me with One shot of Beverlee McKinsey and that is why you only see her once and not spotlighted. I asked and this was all they could deliver.

    Hope that answers your inquiry

  • Oh my God, this is so freakin' awesome!! Would have LOVED seeing this whole version on Emmy night! I'll even take Harley The Superhero because at least it's something of Harley and GusH. And that electric kiss is a favorite, I have to admit. I guess that episode plus the wedding were the only Gus/Harley clips available to Michael. Anyway... Brilliant! I'd love to see more beautiful GL tributes done in ways fans would absolutely love & adore. The flat-line at the end of this one is heartbreaking.

  • wow this was awesome...except for superhero harley

  • My late mother, born in 1927, remembered her mother and grandmother listening to this on the radio when it came out in 1937, and it annoyed her so! She never liked soaps, but I did. While I never watched GL (I used to watch "Days"), I sat down for the final show in memory of my mother, and immediately felt regret that I hadn't followed it all these years. I could see that the quality of the acting, the sets, the writing, everything, was far superior to DOOL, which has deteriorated horrifically.

  • I can"t believe it's over...On Friday I sat in the lounge area at my work crying like a baby...sad for my loss of my favorite soap for over 30 years and for happiness to see my favorite couple rejoined (Reva & Josh) I didn't even care that they left Jeffrey hanging in the wind as far as I was concerned it was, and alway be Reva & Josh "Always!"

  • I'm so broken hearted. This was not only my soap, it was my moms, grandmas, and mother in laws. They're gone now and I feel like i'm losing another family member.

  • That was fantastic! Ahh what moments...The CW tribute was good (love Betty) but this is better by the extreme. Thank you posting and thank you for creating.

  • The Guiding Light Tribute should have been even longer than this. Also I would have liked to see the 'Bold and The Beautiful' winning speech at the end. Instead there were too many Vanessa Williams singing numbers, which were plain ridiculous and no good for entertainment nor for displaying Miss Williams 'talents'.

  • Thanks for this tribute video of so many memories. I am a 2nd generation fan and CBS is really losing out on a new generation of GL fans. I think Nielsen got it wrong as I know many people who watch that werent polled or join the fan clubs etc... I wont be watching CBS anymore.

  • Talk about disrespect! The Daytime Emmys: Basically it was a colossal waste of tv time. They may as well have sent everybody through on a conveyor belt and just thrown their awards at them as they passed by. They could have cut Vanessa Williams' second showing. To GL in particular: What they did (or didn't do) with the "tribute" to this historic show is just reprehensible. It is one of television's LONGEST EVER continuous running tv series. It deserved better treatment. BOOOO to CBS/CW!

  • 3:04 - 3:15 is the reason why daytime network execs & TV execs themself need to stop & think about killing off the art form of the soaps or daytime dramas (yes, GL included). (But I'm unsure how we stop it, because we don't seem to have the producers & headwriters of old that might be able to stop the continuing hemoraging of ratings). The amount of actors & actresses who started on soaps or honed their craft on them is absolutely amazing (& this clip only showed a few from GL's past) .

  • I can't believe Vanessa Williams got a second singing segment and the GL 4 minute tribute was cut down. I think we could have lived without her singing again...her intro was good enough.

  • I'm glad this clip will live on the Internet and YouTube forever. I'll miss the Grand old Lady (GL).

  • So long Springfield. :(

  • The emmys was a joke this year cuz it was on the cw and I hate the cw. But if the emmys was on cbs or abc then the tribute would have been more longer. And everything would have been better.

  • I am not sure about that. CBS did not want to air it. Neither did any other major network. The CW picked it up. The CW is also owned by CBS.

    CBS really doesn't care.

  • I forgot to ask this, but does anyone know who Jimmy Smits played on GL? I've been trying to figure it out, but I can't remember.

  • Wow. I'm going to miss this show SO much. I was a 3rd generation viewer of this great soap and I'm so sad that it's ending. There have just been so many great characters, storylines, and actors on this show and it will be sorley missed. :(

  • I also am 3rd gen.fan... am extremely perturbed that the powers that be couldn't figure out how to save it, or have someone else pick it up... there probably won't be another show to last 72 years

  • Can't help tearing up there. I watched this show for over 20 years with my grandma and it hurts to see it go. Loved seeing Josh and Reva from the beginning and all the great characters that came and went along the way. I can't believe that the Emmy's snubbed them like they did. This show paved the way for daytime television and it deserved its tribute. Even this is not nearly half of what they could have included. Anyway this show will always have a place in my heart.

  • wow look at that wedding . They don't have weddings like that anymore. I wish more of the old characters were included like Marah and Sandy were included.

  • That flatline sound at the end really twists the knife!

  • Does anyone know the name of the song playing towards the end of the montage? I think it's Bon Jovi???

  • yep, its Make a Memory by Bon Jovi

  • Thanks! I was wondering the same thing.

  • That was beautiful job! I can't believe I'm a 44 year old man and Im actually tearing up over the loss of the show that has been apart of life for year. That was a great and beautiful tribute! Thank you so much!!!!

  • I am a 47 yr. old man and I teared up as well! One sad thing though, this video was originally 4 minutes long and was what the video's producer, Michael Faerman wanted to air, but the powers that be only allowed a 90 sec. tribute!

So sad the disrespect to something that was on the network for 70 years.

    Shame on CBS!

  • Yes Shame on CBS! I can't even watch the last remaining episodes...but I will watch the last episode....

  • Don't blame CBS for the non-airing of the 4 minute tribute, blame the producers of the Daytime Emmys this year from that stupid CW (if people say from that network they are interested in creating a daytime lineup -- don't believe them).

Really having Vanessa Williams getting a second singing segment over letting a much longer tribute to the longest running daytime drama I think shows how much all of the networks don't have any faith in them anymore.

  • @Dirkpowers69 It was on the network for 57 years - not 70. People really shouldn't combine the 15 radio years and the 57 television years as they were really 2 different shows, and the radio show and the TV show actually continued to run at the same time with different storylines as well as differentr characters. They just weren't the same shows -- they just happen to have the same title.

  • This video is much better than the 1:30 video they showed. For the longest running drama and the reason why soaps have made it this far, they deserved a much better send off on TV. And Memories by Bon Jovi was a much better song choice than Rhianna's song. Anyways GL will be missed.

  • BRAVO!! Wish this would've shown on t.v., but I do love it!! Will miss Guiding Light forever!

  • This is what definately should have been shown on Emmy night. The producers of the Emmy Telecast should be ashamed of themselves!!!!!

  • it really really REALLY sucks that this wonderful soap is going off air.

    goodbye GL :(

  • Very Nice

  • that was a great tribute and the cast deserved better than what they got on emmy night.

  • 1:10 mark Save the Cheerleader! Save the World!

  • absolutely insane that they get rid of this for a game show. RIP GL

  • WOW!

  • Thank you for posting - THIS IS what should have been shown!

  • THIS is what should have been shown.

  • Particularly with the first minute, i was astounded. I jumped on the Otalia bandwagon, i've been watching for 6 months, but the way that this tribute was put together gave me goosebumps and brought me to tears at the same time. I may not have the history of watching the show that so many have but because of this tribute i feel i do know how the loss feels in a small way, as well as how it feels to have witnessed something so special. Stunning.

  • Man that was much better than the heavily edited Emmy night version! Very sad! Loved Beth's voice-over in the end!

  • Thank you for posting this. Goodbye GL - I will miss you everyday.

  • Thank you Michael for this bit of what we've been avid fans for over the decades. I really loved that opening and though I liked the new one this one tells the story of what it's all about, love and family however that works out. I'm bereft that after the 18 of this month Guiding Light will be gone. To quote Babaramdas as a farewell, "gone, gone hail the goer."

I will so miss Guiding Light and I will never ever buy P&G products again! I'll hunt down anythijng else to take their place.

  • I never watched GL till recently and I am ashamed to know that for all my life there was suck an amazing show out there that I have only recently been able to enjoy...

Great tribute though and I hope that some other network has a mind set to grab this and never let go. Even Passions got to go to DirectTV for a while this one should not be able to die like this.

  • Thank you for posting this Michael. The Emmys should be ashamed for cutting the GL tribute. That was so much more stunning. It was more of what our beloved show and 72 year old broadcasting icon deserved. Shame on the Emmys. Shame on CBS for canceling GL.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this video. I so appreciate it! They really sliced it down for the Emmy telecast - darn them!!!

  • The Emmy's should be ashamed of themselves could not even give them 4 mins

  • Oh yeah, that had me in tears... I just doesn't seem fair. <3 I kinda wish we could have seen Tony and more of the Santos, and more Ross, but they did cover a lot of the major, most remembered moments scenes. <3 Geez I'm going to miss this show.

  • Meh, this one is only a little better. Could have been tightened up. And starting with the much-hated "dirty hands" open shows the producer knows nothing about what the fans like.

  • Thank you for sharing this.

  • Great tribute.

  • You would think after GL gave us 72 wonderful years they could have been given a full four minutes for this plus time for the cast to wave goodbye. So many parts of the Emmy's were cut though ... sad all around.

Awesome job though thank you for posting!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I really wanted to see it.

  • Thanks for posting this. I am so disappointed that Guiding Light is almost over. I watch it every day and will miss it a lot. It's a shame another network didn't pick it up.

  • Thank you for posting on You Tube...I rely on You Tube these days as I no longer record anything anymore....Great video...Was that Ross Marler with Sherry Stringfield's Blake? If so, that was the only clip of Ross.......

  • Thanks for posting. Video never did show up for me on his site.

  • thanks!

  • thanks so much for posting this! I thought the short tribute was awesome, but this is the kind of tribute that we needed!! i'm in tears here, GL truly is amazing!

  • THANK YOU for posting the full version, so sad this was not shown fully, a major let down to all those who have loved GL for so many, many years!

  • thank you Michael Fairman for this. *clap clap clap*

  • Really good job Michael did of putting that together. The edited one was not fair to the fans who have loved GL for so long. But there was definitely alot of iconic moments in the 4 minute clip.

  • This is beautiful. I'm so sorry they didn't air it in its entirety on the Emmy's broadcast.
