These two are great blues players.Neil Schon turned down Derrick & the Domino's to play for Carlos Santana at age 17. Gregg Rollie is the voice of Black Magic Woman. Then in some bizarre mutiny, Schon tried to take Carlos' band away from him, Schon was fired. He & Rollie stuck together. When Gregg left, Journey's sound changed a lot.
clothes aside...these guys were amazing..too bad most people only know them by 3 or 4 songs that came later..the early stuff greg rolie on keys was the shit.
Ok Stevie...fess up ...@ 4:46 - 4:48 That smirk of his turns into a full blown (yea I remember what you did last nite ) laugh that he cant contain ...as he's looking specifically off to his side. Thats one of them lovers smirks...Great to see Stevie was having fun...

I love this song, but the beginning jazz improvisation by Perry makes me want to puke. Another reason I wasn't a follower of Journey. I do like them regardless...they had some great songs in the early 80's.
I loved hearing Steve do call and response with Neal's guitar - wonderful! Reminds me of Ella Fitzgerald doing the same thing with the horn players in her bands. So nice. . . .
Call it what ever you want but it is a fantastic show of Steves ability to do anything he had wanted to in his prime and I just wish he had done more things like this bluesy one or some R&B covers I'd listen to him do Oklahoma or Phantom of the Opera even now! Heck I'd pay him to sing the ABC song to me! LOL
I agree. This is not true blues but it is a rock song with a blues feel. I love Journey and their integration of other musical styles. Journey rarely played pure rock, pure pop, or pure blues. They mixed and match styles, creating their own diverse sound that was Journey. :) That's the sign of a true musician - the ability to play multiple genres and the music still sound great.
So what? And why can't a "rock" band play a blues song? Why can't a "pop" or "metal" band play reggae, rock, blues, whatever?
Also, rock is influenced heavily by blues and rock is in some cases a logical progression following blues. So yeah, this is a blues song. And it's freakin awesome.
Well he refers to his bandmates as two of the best blues players in the world, arguably of course, but no one is claiming that Journey's a blues band... meh. Music is music.
You should have kepts your mouth shut. Well, fingers off the keyboard...I don't know. You shouldn't have said anything about that. Because, yes, this song is a bluesy rock song. Journey may not be classified as a blues band but they are all very talented and versitile...Just like Led Zepp isn't a reggae band but have you heard their song Dyer Maker? So...yeah...just....don't even go there.
Where has all the talent gone in music?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Journey fan but this is not the Blues. It may be written with a blues progression but the blues? No.
Blues = John Lee Hooker, BB King, Robert Cray, Stevie Ray Vaughn

Point taken.
Yes, it is a great song, played by absolutely awsome musicians, and it definitely has a nice blues feel.
But, when you're looking to play some blues would you reach for a Journey album, or for the afore metioned artist in my previous post?
Hey, I appreciate the banter.
Take care.
