  • Sagenhaft !

  • German and Austrian music is impossible without German words, which define thoughts, intonations, feelings, and sense. The greatest Fisher-Dieskau is my God of German chamber music. Hampson in Mahler songs is giant! I highly appreciate all his magnificent skills making it. Hampson ’ soul lives in Mahler music with its depth and height, tenderness and tragic element. The Great music and the great performance! Yes, you are correct with appearance this theme in his symphony.

  • I am not a Hampson Fan, but this is outstanding

  • I simply love it. I use to whistle it almost every time I'm on my way to work. Mahler is one of my favorite Composers. I also like the fact that it appears in his first symphony 3rd movement as well. ;)

  • Lovely singing! TY alissoncfr for posting. No black eyes from me brother. lol

  • Fischer-Dieskau ist der beste Interpret dieser Lieder.

  • I love when people quiet down at 0:32. And this is a great performance.

But in this case words are very important.

But in this case words are very important.

  • Achingly beautiful; one of the most moving pieces of music I've ever heard.

  • Thanks for this video . This version is absolutely fantastic . Hampson is perfect . Schmerz ohne Pathos . And Bernstein and the orchester , too , of course .

My favourite one was by Vera Soukupova ( LP Supraphon) . In a way , it's not so different from Hampson's . She lives this song ( and the other Lieder eines f. Gesellen) But there is something fresher (tragic , though ) ,which makes think to youth , and Mahler composed this music as he was still young .It's impossible to find the CD .

  • are you kidding? this is high level music making, the great Mahler, great orchestra, conductor and singer. Bernstein lived this music as did Hampton and the orchestra. The walls of the hall have the notes of 100's of years. This is a fantastic video, thank you.

  • As good as this in so many ways, if you have lived these songs, one can hear there is a disconnect with the emotional content of this text. These are very challenging songs to present and I enjoyed this performance as it was very well presented.

  • two people clicked the dislike button on accident and someone will click it just because I posted this!!! lol

  • Slechte dag gehad

  • I was transfixed. Mahler just reaches me at the deepest level. And to have these two artists and this orchestra performing! It's total sensory overload!

And thanks for letting us participate in the applause and film credits.

  • sometimes words no not matter, instinct tells you this is a beautiful song sung from the heart.

  • so thank you dreamerpictures for this hard work! it'll be very helpful for polish people!

  • maybe not so hard work, but 2 month ago I was hopeful..

now I think that not always text is not so importance,,

music is the most impotrance and your feeling..

    thank you diekar000 so much!

  • this translation is good for people, who do not understand these german words. for listening these 4 songs from mahler it is important to understand the text, because it have a "wort-ton-verhältnis". listening the 4 songs from "fahrenden gesellen" without knowing the text, is not so clever...

  • Ciekawe komu sie nie podobal moj komentarz?przeciez to nie byl nawet komentarz,ale tlumaczenie na j.polski;

  • um, I think only native German can sing mahler proper... I can clearly hear Hampton is not. But great performance, anyway!

  • To be honest... no. I am German, but he does a real good job ;)

  • Hampson is one of those rare things: a singer with brains and voice. Need more of those.

  • His lips look really weird when he sings, but he's FANTASTIC!

  • sentiti allevi e gigi d'alessio allora

  • Ma cosa dici?

  • One of the main reasons I keep singing is this man's voice. If someone believes that Thomas Hampson does a bad job, that person is an idiot. Jump on stage and do a better job.

  • Darüber hab ich heute eine LK KLausur geschrieben. -.-

  • Klingt interessant. Was war die Fragestellung?

  • Wir mussten diesen Stück mit einem Ausschnitt von Mahlers drittem Satz aus der ersten Sinfonie vergleichen.Ist ja so ziemlich Deckungsgleich ;)

  • Musikvereinsaal, Wien - Wiener Philharmoioniker. Leitung von Leonard Bernstein

  • The video is C 1991 Musikvereinsaal, Wien - Wiener Philharmoniker. Leitung von Leonard Bernstein

  • please can someone tell me when this performance was?

  • Hampson has such a great voice and Lenny´s interpretation is heartbreaking.

  • da muss ich abschied nemen, von allen liebsten platz...oh, very melting...I used to own the laser disc, great memory...tears

  • Very good.

  • Beautiful voice, GREAT PERFORMANCE, Bravo Thomas "Handsome"

  • Wonderful....Hampson is such a sensitive interpreter of Mahler.
