1. It's clearly evident that the truck made no attempt at slowing down (at all) no wheel lock, no brake marks or tire smoke on the road.

2. Judging by the speed of the truck, time delay until impact and trajectory of road, the truck driver had sufficient reaction time, yet was still oblivious to stalled traffic ahead.

This is a display of gross negligence by the truck driver, no matter how you look at it.

The accident took place on July 28, 2006.

Miljenko Stričak (age 26, the one who caused the accident) said that he was sending a text message when he was entering the Ledenik Tunnel. He also said that the sunlight was blinding him and he couldn't see the traffic signs.

Additionaly, he violated the speed limit (60kph / 35mph) by driving at 100kph / 60mph. And he didn't even touch the brake pedal when he was approaching the traffic jam.

In September 2008, he was sentenced to 8.5 years in prison.

There are some things you just DON'T do in a car while commuting or driving in traffic. At least with cell phones, you have the option of a hands-off device that can prevent you from taking your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road, but blackberries and other text devices are an even bigger hazard. What's crazy is that some lawyers will fight laws against this!

You won't believe it: The mobile phones ARE banned in Croatia during the drive, but the law says that "driver must not USE the mobile phone without a hands-free device". Of course, many people interprete it like "I must not TALK to the phone", and the SMSs are not mentioned at all.
