We have had 2 GL's (450 & 550). They have both been terrific and super dependable and amazingly comfortable. Also, note that they are unibody design not frame on body which provides a much better sense of stability and rigidity. The GL has received great reviews from the motoring press. I have no hesitation recommending this vehicle to anyone looking for an outstanding and capable but pricey SUV.

Yes, the gas mileage is nothing to write home about but this is a large, heavy vehicle with a 382 hp v8. A little v6 4runner from 10 years ago only got 15-18 mpg with 183 hp.

That's $4,000 less than a Platinum Edtion Cadillac Escalade! As much as I love the 'Slade, I'm goin after the GL. When my Mom had a Denali, it got 13/17 MPG (14.4 average. Mom drove smoothly too), had 57 less horses and is 2 inches smaller. It must be because of less weight and the fact that the GL has 3 more gears.

Don't get me wrong, now! The exterior of this truck is very nice...but, the interior control panel DEFINITELY need some work! As far as, American vehicles being inferior to Euro. vehicles? Merc.-Benz makes spectacular cars but, their VERY unreliable and, they need to workout their technology gliches. I would consider a BMW, though. ;-)

No it does not. It shares the RR platform that's modifed from the Ram 03-08 truck. The GL is based on the W100 Series platform. The Dodge platform is full frame. The MB is unibody.

Styling is a subjective thing, not a flaw or a good thing.

Don't get me wrong now. German brands are VERY nice...but, American brands have a lot of good features to them also that, some people fail to discover. Most American luxury vehicles have the same luxury features that, foreign vehicles have(if not more)! The GL is a very nice luxury truck with a smooth ride but, it can't be trusted on rugged terrain like, GM's Escalade or, Linc's. Navi. can. With those two SUVS..., you get both(luxury and, the off-road performance).

MB GL500 is overall more comfortable but has a little more body roll. Lexus are very comfortable coming close. They are as quiet as the Merc but are a bit less compensating

how does it compare with the Range Rover?

The MB is bigger, it seats 7 vs 5 for the Range Rover. It has more power/torque than the RR, and weighs less, the RR Super Charged has slightly more than the MB but again it is in the same body, and it is still slower. I feel RR has always had a suspect reliability history(British), better when BMW took ownership, now suspect again with Ford ownership. Drive them both and see which one fits you better.

The R Class is the entry into the crossover market. The GL is just a straight SUV. Do they read the script before they say it on cam?
