there's a slight difference between kicking a ball backwards and putting one foot in front of the other to generate motion...
if you could pass forwards in rugby you could launch the ball to your teammate on the try line, which you used to be able to do in soccer until they introduced your offside rule. its not THAT different

apart from that you can't pass ahead of you.
in football you can pass anywhere ahead of you, unless the 2nd last defender is further towards the halfway than the player you are kicking too.
what i'm saying is that it takes a lot more skill to run and pass tactically in football, as there is another dimension: depth.
rugby is an advanced "piggy in the middle" when it comes to passing.

So is it accurate to assume that football/soccer/futbol is played mainly by poorer black south africans and rugby is played mainly by wealthier whites and wealthier black south africans?

Well, its got more to do with culture, where black people have found love for soccer, the white people have found love for rugby, and because of different dynamics. The wealthier black children tend to play football and the poor whites also tend to play rugby.
