Raquel Welch, subbing for the absent Goldie, did a sweet and sincere job with her speech--except for that mad dash to the podium!! You didn't win it personally Rocky :))
these award shoes were so cute the women with their curly hair, soft eyes, the accents and the elegant outfits and the men's smart suits - soo 70s :p and i love the opening music XD
I found out that Susannah York died just this January while watching the "In Memoriam" segment in this year's oscars. WOW, I was surprised and very sad to learn that. A very beautiful, versitile, very talented and dedicated actress. She will be missed.
Cannon and York certainly gave great performances too, as did Burns, but Goldie Hawn in "Cactus Flower" was one of the most endearing performances of all time. For those who think she "didnt deserve it", try watching the film again. The film was one of the biggest hits that year for a good reason.
So beautiful Raquel Welch, and did people notice Elizabeth Taylor in the audience with that gorgeous lavender dress, my god. Is there a video of her presenting this year??
Cannon deserved the Best Supporting Actress Oscar here NOT Goldie Hawn
Think about it, Cannon is portraying a very uptight mother/housewife whose repressions have manifested themselves into self-loathing, doubt, and paranoia regarding her husband and friends during a time when sex was becoming more open and free.
Raquel Welch is unfucking real! Oh my God! At this time (1970) there was no sexier-looking (and sexier-sounding) woman on the whole damn planet than Raquel Welch!
Just look at her in this clip. THE WOMAN IS GORGEOUS!! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!
How does any heterosexual man look at this clip and not get blue balls??!!
I sure can't! My balls ache right now as I sit here typing this message!
To be honest, I've never seen Cactus Flower, but Goldie is a class-act. However, this was a tough year as Catherine Burns was brutally visceral in her portrayal of a lonely, naive and eventually contaminated young woman in "Last Summer."
My favorite portrayal here, though, is Dyan Cannon. Her character of Alice (Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice) seemed to be the most conflicted/natural with the representation of contrasting viewpoints of the conservative housewife, to a swinging 1960s sexual mores.
Catherine Burns sort of looks like Goldie Hawn in this clip. She sort of reminds me of the way Goldie Hawn looked in Death Becomes her - when Helen introduces Ernest to Madeline. Hahahaha.
Burns and York{whomever they are} looked as though they were bored out of their minds and couldn't hide the fact that both seemed to think the whole Oscar nonsense was just that..nonsense. Burns' eyeroll was hilarious. If Burns and York did that these days they would be torn to shreds. I miss when people were real.
@loxj According to sources, it's said that Susannah York didn't like the fact that she was nominated without her consentiment :( But she was great in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" anyway ;)
I like Goldie but she was the least deserving in her category to have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 1969. Hawn's daughter, Kate Hudson, should have won the same award decades later for "Almost Famous", but she didn't. I think her mother's former win might have held a little hold over resentment for Hudson's loss.
sheliaisbuff17: Sylvia Miles starred in the Andy Warhol movie, "Heat" with Joe Dellasandro. It was not a "porno" (you must be a Republican). It was a parody of the great Billy Wilder movie, "Sunset Boulevard". It is well worth watching. She's a terrific actress, Mr. Histrionic.
It seems like back then, a lot of nominated actors or actresses never showed up for the Oscar ceremonies. They'd either be on some film location or doing a play. Today, unless someone is sick, near death or dead, anyone and everyone shows up, like the "Slumdog Millionaire" kids. Also, if you look at some of the other clips you'd see empty seats in the audience, as if people won their awards and went home. No such things as "seat occupiers", like Kramer in that one "Seinfeld" episode.
Raquel Welch strikes me as such an attention whore in all the Oscar clips. I've heard she was quite the demanding diva on film sets in those days too.
I heard that after the ceremony everyone was calling Goldie's win a "joke", especially that bitch Sylvia Miles - that's so mean of them, to mock someone as sweet as Goldie. And why exactly did no one laugh at Jennifer Hudson's win?? Now THAT is a joke!
Sylvia Miles did not say such a thing, not to mention her performance was way better than Hawn's. It was labelled "a joke" by lots of people around anyway. Stupid Oscar.
Sylvia did say in an interview a few years later, "I didn't mind losing the Oscar. But to Goldie Hawn??? Please" Actuallt Goldie was the lead in CF but it was her moment and the world fell in love. The best performance? A toss-up between Burns and York. Both were brilliant. Period.
well jennifer hudson won all the critical awards in best suporting actress in which members of the academy vote the outcome.......so which opinion should matter more? members of the academy and all the other awards shows where she unanimously won for the role of effie in dream girls...........or yours?
Even Goldie says now that she didn't deserve an Oscar for that film. She was only nominated just one other time (for "Private Benjamin") however she did give out the Best Actor Oscar the following year (to George C. Scott, who also wasn't there)
Yep, she (previous year's Best Supporting Actress) presented Best Actor whereas Maggie Smith (1969 Best Actress) presented Best Supporting Actor. That was insulting for Smith, who can act circles around Hawn.
Maggie & Goldie switched awards for 1 reason. Maggie was performing at the Ahamanson theater in Design For Living. She presented the first award before she went to the theater. The lead actor award was presented while Maggie was onstage.
Oh man, I wish Goldie had been there! I can just see her giggling her way through her speech...and think of the groovy outfit she would have probably of worn!
According to an interview by Goldie Hawn, she decided to go to London instead of attending the ceremony because she felt that she wasn't going to win anyway. She only found out that she won from a friend who called Goldie (who was asleep) in the middle of the night.
What a joke of a win, one of the least deserving ever. I'm surprised Susannah York attended the awards, after publicly blasting the Academy for having nominated her without asking.
