What made Origins great wasn't just the focus on an epic story, but presenting the story in a fantastic way - from the soundtrack, to the stormy overcast, to the battle itself. Dragon Age 2 didn't bring that, it was just one bloodbath combat scene followed by another.
@WineDineand69 my problem with 2 is that you didn't have customization your armor, weapons, race, hell your choices you make didnt even matter that much since there wasn't any major effect to bite you in the ass later. As for the story like varric said I tired about hearing about the templars and the mages all the bloody time, I get it anders so STFU. And on a final note other than varric I hated all your allies you had they had almost no personality and were annoying as hell.
God this scene is so epic. This is part of what made Origins so memorable. For me, DA2 was completely forgettable. Bioware should have stuck with what made the franchise such a success in the first place. And I totally agree that they butchered the darkspawn; they're now depicted as these kind of gangly, mindless drones... not threatening or intimidating in the slightest. Given Mike Laidlaw's prominent and visible position at Bioware, I think he should take the blame for the recent failings
Never noticed before, but just after Cailan shouts "For Ferelden!" and the next shot shows all the soldiers startrunning at the darkspawn, you can just make out Cailan and Duncan in the background above them, with Cailan waving his sword forward!
You could make a painting of this battle and show how the human army is fighting the dark souls of themselves. Also please put in the option to clip carver on the side of his head.
@jamanduloli2 i never intended to be funny ;)) i got fed up with all the arrow in the knee jokes so i wrote one myself as a mocking tribute to that stupid joke
I made a clan called the Grey Wardens in tribute for all the Wardens that have died if you want to join send a message via text or voice message to MiddlingShark. I'm always on my Xbox360 when not babysitting but we need more people
I hate how DA2 made the darkspawn look like some sort of crappy orc rehash. In my opinion, the game designers totally shot their franchise in the foot by deforming one of the most potent thematic elements of the game; Instead of being this gruesome, unrelenting, perverse force, the darkspawn we're portrayed as these shitty mindless drones. IMO, one of the most sinister features about the darkspawn, is that they seem to be conscious of the atrocities they commit. They evoke pure human corruption.
thumbs up if you did not spare Logain's life near the end. that back stabbing chicken shitstain. of course though, that betrayal made the story sooo damn interesting. i will give him credit for that
This cutscene is 10 billion times more epic than the entire second game. AND IT HAPPENS WITHIN THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF THE SODDING GAME!!! WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!
@imagnome123 Yeah you know... you're definately right. Dragon Age Origins was a journey, with an excellent plot, great characters, and a wonderfully gritty/dark atmosphere. DragonAge 2 was basically a shittier (if thats possible) "State of Emergency" from the PS2 era.
And here we see Cailain displaying the hallmakrs of Theriin men, serial infidelity, rogueish charm, and complete lack of understanding of military tactics.
They should make Duncan come back is DA3 with vengance and hate as something supernatural. If I was him I would be pretty fucking upset to be abandon like that. Plus you never find his body...
Some people hate Ostagar, but it's probably one of my favorite parts of the game. The atmosphere before the battle, as you go around the wilds is grave and foreboding, and when the storm starts during the battle and you're out viewing it as it goes on, it's so freaking cool. I only wish you could participate in it.
No game I've ever played had such an amazing soundtrack. When Cailan screams FOR FERELDEN and that music starts... impossible to describe. And when Duncan looks up and see the tower in flames and an incredible music starts again... perfect, just perfect
@frewd100 That's the thing: he was played up as a treacherous usurper, but Logain believed (and probably correctly) that even if he *had* attacked as planned, the darkspawn would have overwhelmed them and crushed Ferelden unopposed.
@electricbayonet2 that's true, though he was a little mentally unstable because of his experiences with the Orlesian occupation of Fereldan and it made him more afraid of an invasion by them instead of darkspawn
@rnewton182 Agreed, the Darkspawn in two weren't scary or threatening at all, the Darkspawn in this would make me shit myself if I met them in real life.
@mina319 Yes, there is some definite Lord of the Rings elements in this game. The Deep Roads in Orzammar is similar to the Mines of Moria in The Fellowship of the Ring, as is the elvish forest Brecillian is to Lothlorien.
If bioware can make cutscens that everybody loves just in a game and combine it with some of the greatest songs for i game i ever heard they can make a lot of money if they tried to make an anime movie about something in the past maybe about how the magisters got into the golden city came to be darkspawn, have the first blight and then the birth of the grey wardens and them defeating the blight
This part is just as good as some of the huge battles in the LOTR films....Bioware really needs to start a new division of the company that make CGI films...Imagine a scene like this on a movie screen.
I feel worse for Cailan. You can't really fault him for having dreams of being a hero. He grew up in his father's shadow with no real hope of making a name for himself. um why not stay in ostagar and shut the gates cus the only thing that could bring down that door would be an ogre and they only had 1 plus thats the only special thing they brought
@Leonidas19981 Yes... Then the Darkspawn horde regroups and sends even MORE troops up through the Tower of Ishal, in addition to the inevitable siege, thus trapping the Wardens and Caelin's men in between the two. Plus, y'know, the fact that Ostagar is only completely safe on that one side, and the Darkspawn eventually find their way in anyway.
Dragon Age 2 is piece of shit!! This game is best every and it deserves 20 more DLC, i want big battle for Ostagar again but Grey Wardens WIN,that is my end
@RadiioPigeon i agree you with mate i have played DA2 which i must say i like the game even though many people think it wasnt that good but i will always return to the epic story of Origins and it will never get boring it is absolutely amazing i remember when i first Duncan and Cailan died i was so shocked :( and i was like how could they kill such awesome charactars so early on but they defenitely answered my question. Finally FOR FERELDAN! FOR THE GREY WARDENS AND FOR OUR MENTOR DUNCAN RIP!
@TheJeffman1985 You people realize that he didn't do this because he was cruel or just power-mad or anything, he thought that Cailan was going to ruin the kingdom that Loghain, along with Cailan's father, had fought hard to liberate from the Orlesians (whom Cailan was trying to negotiate an alliance with). When you duel with Loghain at the end, he's quick to admit your character's superiority to him in rescuing the kingdom.
@morgannin03 And yet, still a bit of a douche-bag. Game Informer Magazine rated him #9 out of 30 characters who shaped a decade of gaming. This is because he was a sympathetic villain with layers to his character. He wasn't power hungry or insane. He wasn't opening a portal to hell for shits and giggles. He betrayed his son-in-law and his king, and an ENTIRE order sworn to protect his people, in a deluded attempt to defend them himself. He was insane and paranoid... and douchey.
@catiecat101 Yeah, there is a douche side to him, but you can't condemn him for his sins because he had the nation's best interests at heart, though he was heartlessly willing to sacrifice just about anyone he thought he needed to if it helped him save it. He was deluded, overconfident, and bitter, but not truly evil.
@TheJeffman1985 Please, read The Stolen Throne and you'll change your mind... and you'll even scream at your screen asking him "Why, why!!? How can you do this to Maric son, Loghain, how can you!?"
Loghain was a damned bastard. He should have been set on fire while being hanged from the tower at Ostagar by his intestines. A death befitting of a cruel son of a bitch.
I think when Duncan looked at the tower, he knew both Alistair and The Warden were still alive and could stop the Blight. Just a little thought of hope to give :P
@neilladriaansen ME2 is as good or better than ME1. ME1 had too many bugs and bad game mechanics, ME2 has a lot less RPG elements which is a shame but it definitely makes up for it with the improved graphics, cinematics and fluent controls during combat
@liamdudeeee Oh but I love ME2. It truly is a great game, but it's not the kind of sequel I expected for ME1. I could go on about this for hours but I think you already understand that Bioware took a strange turn when making the story for ME2.
@liamdudeeee True, when it comes to gameplay and graphics ME2 is superior. But when it comes to the story Bioware did a poor job. I mean, everyone hates me for working with Cerberus... I dont even want to work with them!! I am loyal to the Alliance and Bioware MADE US betray them. But the worst thing is: NOBODY BELIEVES ME!?!? (except cerberus). A reaper was attacking the heart of the galaxy, How ignorant can a goverment possibly be?
That's my opinion btw, I'm sure lots of people like the story.
@neilladriaansen yeah but if you were a citadel councilor and a massive ship that looked just like a geth design attacked the citadel and a handful of people claimed that it could talk and that it said that it created the mass relays and the citadel, who are you going to believe LOL?
@liamdudeeee Well, since the geth do not have the technology to create a dreadnought that can wipe out the entire citadel fleet and it does NOT look like a get ship it's obvious it is not a geth ship. Also the sensor readings and mass effect fields a reaper emits are far different from a normal geth ship. They even found lots of reaper debris in the citadel. A simple examination will indicate that the large ship was made from a different aloy, and thus is not a geth ship.
@liamdudeeee Uh no, Geth ships are pink/purple and Sovereign is black. I just took a look at some screenshots and designs of both ships and yes the curves are similair, but that's about it.
@HunterDT Its not all that bad man.. yeh its production was a disgrace in terms of the re used environments and the fact that you cant really interact with your party. It's a solid story with a more than epic ending. Nothing will ever beat DA:O though. Nothing.
Origins is so much better Story-wise. DA2 has fun combat but that was the only improvement. I want a Dragon Age game with the same epic scope as this.
funny how everyone blames loghain for the death of cailan but he would have died with or without loghain's help even cailan realised that the darkspawn horde was to large to fight and that they would have lost anyway
Why the fuck did Logain do this? I mean, the plan was perfect, they outnumbered the blighters and they were going to sandwich them perfectly! The creators could have made up a better reason for his betraial! Nott cool!
@Zanator1 I'm guessing because there was a sea of darkspawn between Loghain's rearguard and the king, because of the darkspawn attack on the tower which delayed it to being light they were overwhelmed and surrounded on both sides.
@Dimensionaluk First of all, the whole idea of the plan was haveing the darkspawn sea between the kings and logains forces. Second, did you sea the sea of torches behind logain and his men? His force didnt resume only to the few men in front, but to the sea of men with torches behid the trees, and thirdly, they could not have been surrounded becouse the fortress had only one entrance. Therefore, the idiot didnt have anny reason to run!
@Zanator1 Actually, it was confirmed by Gaider that the Darkspawn were much more numberous than Cailan, Loghain and Duncan previously tought. You can see during gameplay that there's an undending number of Darkspawn still coming from the hills. So, had Loghain followed the plan, they would have been caugth between the Darkspawn that were figthing the King's forces and the ones still coming from the Wilds.
So, while I do no agree with what he did, tactically it was a sound decision.
@AntiXaldin How can it be a tactically sound decision when Loghain had no idea what the actual numbers of the darkspawn were? With the intelligence available to them, the agreed upon battle plan was their best option at the moment. Loghains decision had no tactical validity except to throw the whole country into chaos, it was just a fathers overprotectiveness, and a traumatized mans paranoia (considering the Orlesians and their reinforcements). Only in retrospect was it a better move.
what's the sound that plays on the second part of the battle, at Loghain's betrayal?

@RadiioPigeon i agree you with mate i have played DA2 which i must say i like the game even though many people think it wasnt that good but i will always return to the epic story of Origins and it will never get boring it is absolutely amazing i remember when i first Duncan and Cailan died i was so shocked :( and i was like how could they kill such awesome charactars so early on but they defenitely answered my question. Finally FOR FERELDAN! FOR THE GREY WARDENS AND FOR OUR MENTOR DUNCAN RIP!
LoklithixJJ 10 months ago
Why did the archer only have 1 arrow each? they could have killed many more darkspawn with 4 salves.

This why Dragon Origins beats WOW everytime

Loghain Mac Tir is a douche.......
TheJeffman1985 11 months ago
@TheJeffman1985 You people realize that he didn't do this because he was cruel or just power-mad or anything, he thought that Cailan was going to ruin the kingdom that Loghain, along with Cailan's father, had fought hard to liberate from the Orlesians (whom Cailan was trying to negotiate an alliance with). When you duel with Loghain at the end, he's quick to admit your character's superiority to him in rescuing the kingdom.
morgannin03 10 months ago
@morgannin03 And yet, still a bit of a douche-bag. Game Informer Magazine rated him #9 out of 30 characters who shaped a decade of gaming. This is because he was a sympathetic villain with layers to his character. He wasn't power hungry or insane. He wasn't opening a portal to hell for shits and giggles. He betrayed his son-in-law and his king, and an ENTIRE order sworn to protect his people, in a deluded attempt to defend them himself. He was insane and paranoid... and douchey.
catiecat101 10 months ago
@catiecat101 Yeah, there is a douche side to him, but you can't condemn him for his sins because he had the nation's best interests at heart, though he was heartlessly willing to sacrifice just about anyone he thought he needed to if it helped him save it. He was deluded, overconfident, and bitter, but not truly evil.
morgannin03 10 months ago
@morgannin03
except he was planning to marry the Orlesian Empress, and unify the countries.
But in DA2, i must say that if the Mages rebel, won't the Divine's massive armies destroy everywhere "in the name of peace"?
Religion is such a bad way to fight wars...
WolfytheWolf5667 8 months ago
@catiecat101 The same can't be said for Arl Rendon Howe I think. Especially if you're playing the Human Noble scenario.

@TheJeffman1985 Please, read The Stolen Throne and you'll change your mind... and you'll even scream at your screen asking him "Why, why!!? How can you do this to Maric son, Loghain, how can you!?"
ariznabarreta 10 months ago
Loghain was a damned bastard. He should have been set on fire while being hanged from the tower at Ostagar by his intestines. A death befitting of a cruel son of a bitch.

I think when Duncan looked at the tower, he knew both Alistair and The Warden were still alive and could stop the Blight. Just a little thought of hope to give :P

DA2 was an absolute fucking disaster for Dragon Age's name!
How the fuck can it ever hope to compete with something as epic as this?!!
It wasn't event remotely related to Origins!
For fucks sake, it was a goddamn spinoff...awakening was worthier!
Bioware better make DA3 like Origins
Eragon537744 11 months ago 13
@Eragon537744 DA2 is a great game, but i do prefer Origins..
52210442088401616 11 months ago 3
@Eragon537744 Dragon Age is about the world of Thedas. However I think DA2 done a piss poor job at this.
Purpleisawesome93 5 months ago
@Eragon537744 Bioware always seems to fail when it comes to the first sequel of a series. They made the same error with ME2.
neilladriaansen 5 months ago
@neilladriaansen ME2 is as good or better than ME1. ME1 had too many bugs and bad game mechanics, ME2 has a lot less RPG elements which is a shame but it definitely makes up for it with the improved graphics, cinematics and fluent controls during combat
liamdudeeee 5 months ago
@liamdudeeee Oh but I love ME2. It truly is a great game, but it's not the kind of sequel I expected for ME1. I could go on about this for hours but I think you already understand that Bioware took a strange turn when making the story for ME2.
neilladriaansen 5 months ago
@liamdudeeee True, when it comes to gameplay and graphics ME2 is superior. But when it comes to the story Bioware did a poor job. I mean, everyone hates me for working with Cerberus... I dont even want to work with them!! I am loyal to the Alliance and Bioware MADE US betray them. But the worst thing is: NOBODY BELIEVES ME!?!? (except cerberus). A reaper was attacking the heart of the galaxy, How ignorant can a goverment possibly be?
That's my opinion btw, I'm sure lots of people like the story.
neilladriaansen 4 months ago
@neilladriaansen yeah but if you were a citadel councilor and a massive ship that looked just like a geth design attacked the citadel and a handful of people claimed that it could talk and that it said that it created the mass relays and the citadel, who are you going to believe LOL?
liamdudeeee 4 months ago
@liamdudeeee Well, since the geth do not have the technology to create a dreadnought that can wipe out the entire citadel fleet and it does NOT look like a get ship it's obvious it is not a geth ship. Also the sensor readings and mass effect fields a reaper emits are far different from a normal geth ship. They even found lots of reaper debris in the citadel. A simple examination will indicate that the large ship was made from a different aloy, and thus is not a geth ship.
neilladriaansen 4 months ago
@liamdudeeee Also, a geth ship has no tentacles.
neilladriaansen 4 months ago
@neilladriaansen yeah but the colours of geth ships and soverign is identical and overall design is similar. how the hull is curved and thin.
liamdudeeee 4 months ago
@liamdudeeee Uh no, Geth ships are pink/purple and Sovereign is black. I just took a look at some screenshots and designs of both ships and yes the curves are similair, but that's about it.

tibianus123 11 months ago
@HunterDT Its not all that bad man.. yeh its production was a disgrace in terms of the re used environments and the fact that you cant really interact with your party. It's a solid story with a more than epic ending. Nothing will ever beat DA:O though. Nothing.

i love the part were the two armies are running towards eachother.

where the bloody hell did you find that hat?

Why do the dramatic moments in this game last not so long as they should? The music barely chimes in when Duncan gets killed
thiefac 11 months ago
Origins is so much better Story-wise. DA2 has fun combat but that was the only improvement. I want a Dragon Age game with the same epic scope as this.
Andothul 11 months ago
funny how everyone blames loghain for the death of cailan but he would have died with or without loghain's help even cailan realised that the darkspawn horde was to large to fight and that they would have lost anyway

Dragon Age 2 is so disappointing after Origins. Hawke is a badass but the poor story and gameplay of a ruched product shows.

Why the fuck did Logain do this? I mean, the plan was perfect, they outnumbered the blighters and they were going to sandwich them perfectly! The creators could have made up a better reason for his betraial! Nott cool!
Zanator1 1 year ago
@Zanator1 I'm guessing because there was a sea of darkspawn between Loghain's rearguard and the king, because of the darkspawn attack on the tower which delayed it to being light they were overwhelmed and surrounded on both sides.
Dimensionaluk 1 year ago
@Dimensionaluk First of all, the whole idea of the plan was haveing the darkspawn sea between the kings and logains forces. Second, did you sea the sea of torches behind logain and his men? His force didnt resume only to the few men in front, but to the sea of men with torches behid the trees, and thirdly, they could not have been surrounded becouse the fortress had only one entrance. Therefore, the idiot didnt have anny reason to run!
Zanator1 1 year ago
@Zanator1 Actually, it was confirmed by Gaider that the Darkspawn were much more numberous than Cailan, Loghain and Duncan previously tought. You can see during gameplay that there's an undending number of Darkspawn still coming from the hills. So, had Loghain followed the plan, they would have been caugth between the Darkspawn that were figthing the King's forces and the ones still coming from the Wilds.
So, while I do no agree with what he did, tactically it was a sound decision.
AntiXaldin 1 year ago
@AntiXaldin How can it be a tactically sound decision when Loghain had no idea what the actual numbers of the darkspawn were? With the intelligence available to them, the agreed upon battle plan was their best option at the moment. Loghains decision had no tactical validity except to throw the whole country into chaos, it was just a fathers overprotectiveness, and a traumatized mans paranoia (considering the Orlesians and their reinforcements). Only in retrospect was it a better move.
