@732lover Up until 2005, the Hilux (and Tacoma) were both classed "Compact Pickups". In 2005 the Hilux and Tacoma (like the new one in the vid) were both enlarged to move in into the mid-sized class.
@theninjaswerehere, whos gona talk about US who cares about US, lol, we r talking about the whole world, and top gear is very popular in the whole world ,,
Whether they knew or not, I bet they were legally barred from mentioning Top Gear by name. Using likeness without permission, or copyright infringement, something like that.
Jeremy, are you COMPLETELY SURE you didn't put ANY spare parts in this pickup truck. Except the windscreen. Because it would have killed you when you drove through the Top Gear Production Office. Rofl
The really funny part is that they don't show the really crazy parts - it was lit on fire, drowned in the Channel, and dropped 24 stories in a building demolition...and it still ran. A love tap from a wrecking ball seems minor by comparison.
They have to put the disclaimers so someone stupid doesn't attempt anything. Is it likely someone will? No. But if someone does, Toyota won't be liable. But yeah, that's totally stupid of Americans to do. And at h3ll0b0b, in the US we call small pickups "compacts". Do I say fail because you called it a "ute"? No, it's colloquialism.
Fail! Did you notice that the bloke said "some automotive experts in Europe" and yet in the disclaimer it said "the vechicle depicted in this ad is a Toyota Hilux, a compact sold in the UK" (even though it was a ute [pickup], not a compact) Seriously, that disclaimer made me laugh, "Damaging your vehicle in this fashion is not safe" What a joke! XD
Don't get your point. Are you trying to say the UK isn't in Europe? And are you trying to say the Hilux isn't a compact truck? I don't know what you call them in the UK but here in the States it doesn't get any smaller than that for trucks.
Toyota Hilux's half the size of that are going around everywhere here in Australia, that hilux in my books is a mid sized 4WD ute, not a compact. Not to get to nit picky with Geography (as it's not my strong point) I was always under the immpression that the UK was Great Britian, not Europe. I mean how hard would it have been for the advertiser to say "some auto experts from England'?
Yeah, I see what you're saying. Here in the states our trucks don't get any smaller than that. Actually you can't even find trucks that small anymore.... the smallest available is the Ranger now, and that's considered compact. the full size tacoma/hilux/frontier, while mid-size, is often called "small". But, I wouldn't say that's a good thing for us since IMO our trucks have gotten ridiculously large. A full size truck 5-8 years ago would be mid-size now. Kind of sad.
But as for the Euro/UK thing. Technically the British isles are a part of the European continent, and the UK is in the EU too..... But given you're in Australia you probably get a lot of british television (I'm thinking) and the British seem to have this mind set that they're somehow completely separate from Europe, and I don't know where they get this idea, perhaps wishful thinking, but it comes across blatantly in their programming. For Americans, whom the commercial was aimed, we don't care.
Yeah fair enough, your preety correct with the UK thing. The way the TV shows are presented, they like to think of themselves as still their own Continent. Thats why it had me weirded out as to why they said Europe instead of UK. With the size of the trucks, put in google "Toyota Hilux Workmate" and you'll see just how small our trucks can get, almost matchbox size. When I think of a compact i think of someting like a Mazda 2 or Toyota Yaris, Not a "big" truck like a Hilux :)
I love the disclaimer: 'Damaging your vehicle in this fashion is not safe' really? You don't say.
And 'Automotive experts from Europe?' It's Top Gear lol. They didn't show Jeremy drowning it in the sea though... or James putting it on top of the building before it was demolished.
they talked shit about all the delays and the million dollar driving watch, not o mention when they said everything was finished exept for the handling and the brakes? remember, when clarkson said hammond would have to go drive it because he didnt want to drive a car with 1000 hp and handling and brakes finished at the last minute.
There's another version of this wear they use the clip of the building demolition, and pretty much the same words, and I had to watch it more than once to see if I heard it correctly, and bust out laughing. "Automotive experts." LMAO. I love em, but I don't think even they would claim that, ...well, maybe Jeremy.
But then, why would you sell it?

"Vehicle depicted in this ad is a Toyota Hilux, a compact-" It's compacted after what Top Gear did to it. Plus since when is a Hilux a compact? o_O
Also, "Damaging your vehicle in this fashion is not safe."
Thank you health and safety.

They're not automotive experts, they made a car that burned down the car wash and tried to re-attach a door with duct tape!

The car in the commercial has a permanent place of honor in the Top Gear Studio it's that pickup mounted tilted style you see when they pan in.

@wybo2 the tires are not a Toyota product so how would that compromise the test of the TOYOTA truck

@wybo2 They are testing the truck not the tires.

reasons why the tachoma wouldent stand a chance against the top gear hilux...
engine management + sea water = fail (that lux had no ECU)
CV joints + sand = fail (boots dont last forever)
tree = airbags go off and crumple zone squashes up and prevents engine turning over
fire would melt 80% of it LOL

That truck is older than 13 years old. And I don't like how Toyota doesn't acknowledge that they sold the same truck in the US...

Those European automotive experts were Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, aka Top Gear!
huppypuppy 2 years ago 8
Yes, in the United States we would, in fact, try this at home. We're kind of stupid like that, as shows like "Jackass" prove.
For me, the hilarity lies instead with the awful voiceover guy of this commercial. Sweet lord.
And "Automotive Experts in Europe". I guess "Guys from an admittedly awesome but not-so-educational talk show in Britain" wouldn't cut it.
