Huge Vic Damone fan, always was as we listened to plenty of him as a child. I agree with Miltsar. With the proper arrangements and management, he could have been bigger than any of them. As far as sheer talent, far better than most. True on the Sinatra comments, which proves my point...if you have a good promoter, you can go far.
Damone never achieved the super star status he deserved. His voice, by far, is the most beautiful of that period. Even Sinatra thought so. I think the problem was that the"big musical ' period was ending and too many of his recordings were saddled with bad arrangements. Plus the Beatles came along and everything changed. But no doubt about it he had and continues to have the most beautiful & expressive voice. Listen to his album "Closer Than A Kiss '...nothing else like it for sheer beauty
Garland's voice fell into the mezzo range. Her range was not limited; she sang in the "sweet" range of just under two octaves, where she could use her chest register well. At her best, which is unparralled popular singing, Garland's voice was a wonder of soaring top notes, unique phrasing and a variety of tone colors in merely one beat of her famous vibrato. Her voice was an instrument that could be used to devestating effect throughout her over 40 years of singing.
Two magnificent voices coming together in rare form...listen & feel for this greatness will never happen again! Judy & Vic clearly are peak & what incredible quality they both exhibit...tones, power, rhythmic ability, they had it all and were a match made in musical heaven...thank you for posting this amazing work of art...
This medley was put together by Judy's new boyfriend Bobby Cole, whom Judy hired to give him employment while they were together, and also to rub in the face of Mel Torme, a fine talent in his own right, but an egotistical annoyance. To me, this medley, and Judy's rendition of "As Long As He Needs Me" are Judy's finest singing on TV, period. There are those, including Mickey Rooney, who said Judy was better unrehearsed or under-rehearsed, but I think this medley proves otherwise.
You'll never see or hear the like of this again; treasure it; don't try to explain its greatness or even remotely critique it; you'll do yourself an injustice.
Nelson Riddle and his Orchestra......maybe......NR generally did Judy's TV shows/albums/concerts. NR never recorded an album w/Vic. Too bad. Great singer. Sinatra said "he had the best pipes in the biz". Nice wife too! Ms. Carroll is a class act.
My fav duet from the CBS shows -thanks very much for the upload. I love this arrangement and the powerful delivery. Glad to have this added to the YouTube collection of GGMs- Great Garland Moments. Interesting liner notes story of Damone "disappearing" to prep alone for this show before they rehearsed together. This Kismet duet and "Stormy Weather" for me define her great talent. "Too good - too good to last" to borrow a phase.
I`ve always heard this that ver vocal range was limited ... can somebody tell me what was her vocal range actually? and if you can have a more powerful voice and still not have a big vocal range?
I don't know much about her vocal range, but I've heard that as well. You can have a really powerful voice with not much range though, just watch any videos of Carol Burnett singing.
@Indy7888 her vocal range was insane. not limited at all. she could belt in chest voice in a register far lower than they let her, and same goes for those registers higher... as she aged the combo of drinking/smoking cigs/drugs limited her range.
Yes, her range was limited. I believe she could go down to a contralto's low F (or E), but she seldom did, as notes that low were merely sounds, devoid of her characteristic rich timbre. She sometimes had trouble with high Bs and Cs, and these were an octave below a sopranos high Bs and Cs. But this is because Judy's singing was unadorned; she never resorted to using head voice, so her tessitura remained limited in her chest range. Big vocal range and vocal power are unrelated to one another.
@less01 I believe she was a contralto which is the lowest female singing range..theres 3 different types and believe that she is a mixture of lyric and dramatic contralto but dont quote me on that..I only know that b/c i'm also a contralto ( i can sing Frank Sinatra with no problem and I'm a girl) and i'm such a big Judy fan =D
@less01 Judy did not have a great range, but she had a magnificent and unusual voice. Actuaslly, in her youth, she had a better range--exquiste high tones, but she lost those as her voice matured and damage occurred.
I agree with 'luftloft'...wonderful chemistry, and you can see the look of respect & admiration that she has for her guest, these songs really suited Judy too...Thanks for your recent posts.
Impossibly handsome Vic and ludicrously talented Judy.....

@waif55 then where did her power lie? is there a difference about being loud and having a high range?

Judy, even though her vocal range is limited, still handled this difficult music beautifully!
