He probably hates the New Year and Valentine's Day because of the fact that people act like such idiots in the course of "observing" them. For example, New Year is a thinly veiled excuse to get smashed, and V-Day is a thinly veiled excuse to snog (with other acts of "affection") your significant other in very public places. I don't blame his frustration.
