  • Love 'em both.

  • What it doesnt end with them crashing into the sign BOOOOOOoooooooo

  • Futurama is one of the best shows ever.

But personally I much prefer Red Dwarf!! ^^

  • nioce job!

  • God this video feels sooooo good right now.

  • Well that was just fucking awesome!

  • Nice

  • It's a montage. However both are sci fi related shows which is probably why it's familiar with the shots. I wouldn't mind seeing more intro sequences that go well with that music though for comparison if there are any.

  • Nice video, but I'd like to see you try and make opening credits for Red Dwarf using the Futurama theme... might be more of a challenge.

  • 0:20 Leela has a hand in her cleavage.

  • Red Dwarf is miles better.

  • Writing an entire paragraph on the lack of similarities between two shows based on a throw away comment in the description is stupid, Why is it only the people with bullshit to say spell properly?

  • @theflowerpotpeople

I agree, and mite I ad your spelling is impekible.

  • @AshtonPhoto

Well TreBlaine put forward an argument that I felt I couldnt top that, but at the same time I couldnt see how someone attacking this vid got so many votes up when a quick look down the comments would suggest that majority of people agree with the video and the similarities between the two shows, admittedly Red Dwarf WAS a shameless rip off of most british sitcoms, its a classic 'odd couple' pairing, set against a 'lost in space' backdrop. And as for spelling, fkuc it!

  • @theflowerpotpeople I'll have you know I can actually spell, and I put actual thought into my comments. You're just jealous because I give it more thought than you do and learn from my mistakes. One thing I've learned is not to read snarky responses, so I won't be reading yours.

  • @Shockwave474 What part of your comment constitutes "more thought" than mine? and if you had read my comment (which you claim not to, though your writing a response based on the comment so the only conclusion to draw there is, you read it..and you claim to put thought into these..tut tut...) as for jealousy, having re read both my comments and yours i still conclude my arguments are superior so why would I be jealous of inferior, angry responses lacking thought and coherency?

  • I really honestly thing Matt Groening or however you spell it got futurama from watching Red Dwarf...

  • Hahaha i forgot about Red Dwarf! Nicee.

  • there are even tha same episodes, like that about when time jumps

  • no, Futurama took a good few episodes from Red Dwarf- Prof farnsworth creates a triploscope (Red Dwarf-Demons and angels),Also Body swap is used as the basis of an entire episode when they keep changing eachothers bodies in thier sleep. Wivout doubt Matt groening is a Red dwarf fan ( although in reference to his surname...Groening is german and is spelt groning wiv an umlaut over the O, obviously he dropped it to erase its german roots...not too well either!!)

  • @rudibongo No, he lost the umlaut because it would have been too hard to explain to the dumb Americans.

  • oddly enough this vid actually FELT like a Red Dwarf intro...

  • hahahaha i fucking lvoe this! it cross's two of my loves! futurama red dwarf :D

  • brilliant

  • Yes because Red Dwarf was well known for having a cyclops as one of it's stars and a talking lobster for a supporting character.

Seriously, apart from the fact that they both go through space in a ship there's NO similarities.

It's like saying Star Trek and Lord Of The Rings have similarities just because they have obnoxious people with pointy ears in them.

  • @fieryfather oo someones all madddd :P

  • @fieryfather

    Captain Obvious is confused!

  • @fieryfather Yes because the intention of this video was to compare the two and not to combine them to make a slightly amusing video.

  • @fieryfather Moron! There are a-many similarities trope-wise. In fact LOTR vs Star Trek/Wars and Red Dwarf vs Futurama are fucking good examples you moron!!!!!

  • @dinosaurssayni THe 'heroic space-bum' for example.....

  • Comment removed

  • @Treblaine i think you've got lister and rimmer mixed up here...

  • @abrindley123 oh shit

  • @Treblaine referring to characters by surname is a sci-fi staple, most movies and TV shows do the same (Alien & Inception are two that spring to mind). And of course there would be "absurdist speculation of scientific principals", they are both sci-fi comedy shows. The characters are standard protagonists for any show. Also, Red Dwarf didn't have a regular female character in it until about the 6th series. And there isn't an elderly professor.

  • @svivian

I guess you're right. Also Star Trek (we NEVER learn Spock's first name). AH HA! No elderly professor! Though though they DO both have a deadpan bald guy who is there largely for exposition (Farnsworth/Holly).

And of course lovable-idiot space-bum frozen and implausibly inept yet near indestructible robot who is a friend and equal, rather than just a servant (Kryten/Bender). There ARE Kochanski/Leela similarities though.

They shows aren't identical, but they aren't totally dissimilar.

  • @Treblaine How did you mix up Lister and Rimmer??!

  • @roadjam I'll put it down to 4am on a caffeine high.

I did correct this but the corrected version got down-voted :(

  • @roadjam yeah???? how???? dumbass!!!

  • @fieryfather if you watched both you must see similarities. There is even same episode, about time jumps. You dont see similarity about Lister and Fry? They are the same persons,..

  • @fieryfather Really? both shows:

-Protagonist is a slovenly young man frozen and revived after a long time, he is stupid but kind (Fry/Lister) his best friend is a robot who doesn't understand humans (Bender/Kryten) they butt heads with snarky and anal mid-manager (Hermes/Rimmer)

-Also a disliked non-human crew member who mirrors a very human stereotype (Zoidberg/Cat)

-Everyone is refereed to by their Surname or title

-Adventures based on absurdist speculation of real scientific principals

  • @Treblaine Groening stole egregiouly from Red Dwarf, as did Joss Wheeden and that firefly nonsense. Good call, fellow Red Dwarfer

  • @Treblaine lol think fieryfather should STFU now lol :D

  • @Treblaine That's the basis for many sitcoms...

  • @Scarperguy name another one

  • @Treblaine A Bingo Ate the Above Guy's Dingo!

  • @Treblaine I agree that Fry is kinda like Lister and Leela and Kochansky have similar roles, but Bender has a lot more personality than Kryten, and Hermes and Rimmer have similar standards but completely different personalities. Also, Cat is a lot cleaner (and also more self-centered) than Zoidberg.

  • @Shockwave474 @Treblaine yeah if anything i'd say that Fry is Lister, Leela is actually Rimmer (think about it, she gets more annoyed at his stupidity than anyone else.) Bender is Cat (has an ego and thinks humans are below him), and Kryten is a tough one to pin on these guys, but i'd say closest to the Professor (he knows plenty but can also be very dumb at the same time) or Zoidberg (tries to be more human but fails)

  • @Rawrgoaway Is Hermes Holly, then?

  • @Shockwave474 Nah, thinking about it, i'd say Professor is Holly. Huge intellect, but massively stupid.

  • @Rawrgoaway In what way is Holly stupid? I find him quite clever, the way he sometimes teases people.

  • @Shockwave474 Series 3, Episode 2, Marooned. Thought smudges on the scanner were Black Holes. I think thats a good example. The writers even stated he suffers from "Computer Senility" and the Professor is definitely senile

  • @Rawrgoaway Yeah, I'll admit that I haven't seen most of it in a while and forgot that episode. But an example of his cleverness is the way he forces Rimmer to apologize in S1E3 (Balance of Power) when Rimmer demands his arm back and calls Holly ugly.

  • @Shockwave474 Yeah but you can't define that as cleverness really. Its more like stubbornness. Though i'm not saying Holly has never been clever, just that he's pretty dumb at times as well. The professor created amazing inventions, but some of them are pointless or useless, just how Holly has created many amazing things, but they're still pointless or useless. They're quite a match in terms of personality.

  • @Rawrgoaway Yeah, I thought of a better example but then I forgot it. Oh, now I've got one. It's in S1E4 (Waiting for God) where a garbage pod comes to the ship but Holly thinks it's funny to let Rimmer think it's an alien craft. Turns out Lister thinks it's funny too. And you say Holly has smart moments, AND dumb moments? Makes him sound pretty normal, actually.

  • @Shockwave474 I don't get what you're trying to point out?

  • @Rawrgoaway I'm pointing out that sometimes, as in the case where Holly thinks that those smudges are black holes, Holly is the misinformed one, whereas sometimes, as in the case of the garbage pod, it's someone else who is misinformed.

  • @Shockwave474 So, basically what you're saying is that if someone has the capacity to pull a prank, that makes them very smart? I'll get right on setting up my six year old brother's application to Harvard then. Better send a letter to Yale too, just in case.

  • @hyperactivehyena Dude, that's just one example—Holly has done other things too. And in my mind, what he does doesn't really count as a prank. Or at least not the kind six-year-olds probably play.

  • @Treblaine Well if you put it like that then Red Dwarf is a rip-off of the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You're using broad terms to generate similarities between the cast members. The same could be done with THHGTTG and RD

  • @aksquash Neither are rip-offs of anything and I never said that, you just assumed. They just have similarities that I think are cute and 40 other people think so as well.

Tropes are a GOOD thing ins sci-fi and ALL fiction, and VERY distinct from plagiarism.

  • @Treblaine Ma bad bro.

  • @Treblaine EVERYBODY LOVES CAT.

  • @rachelisinsane EVERYBODY LOVES ZOIDBERG

  • @Treblaine Cat is way too cool to be a zoidberg.

  • @Treblaine brilliant assessment, that.

also: they are both highly satirical of culture and damned funny in pursuing that satire/

  • @Treblaine nice comparison, but Cat is my favorite ):

  • @Treblaine You forgot the well-meaning but senile and somewhat questionably reliable superior (Holly/Professor Farnsworth) :)

  • @fieryfather Spock is not obnoxious just really smart

  • @fieryfather Well, there is the fact that the main character [a dim-witted slob with a minimum wage occupation] arrives in a future he doesn't understand by way of stasis sleep [Fry and Lister], has a best friend with an unwarranted but epic sense of self-importance [Cat and Bender], and an eager-to-please twit no one respects [Kryten and Zoidberg]. It's subtle, but there are similarities. Honestly, when I discovered Red Dwarf, I wondered if there was any minor influence.

  • @fieryfather you're a stupid fucktard. If red dwarf is not similar to startrek then why did Patrick Stewart felt he had to sue the show?? if you don't believe me watch the dvd special features of red dwarf

he only didn't sue is because he found out it was more of a parody

2nd of all its just a joke you shit head, its not the first time someones took one thing and put it into another. Eg. stargate SG-1 with macguyver theme and those two things are REALLY unrelated.

  • i enjoyed that

  • 0:18 hand on leela's boob! o.o

  • Especially in the time period where it was Lister, Kryten, Cat and Kochanski. Slob, Robot, non-human who's biology is the butt of many jokes, and chick who kicks ass but stays girly. Nailed it dude!

  • @legiontriplesix How can you forget Rimmer and Holly? :O

  • @96SmegHead Rimmer = Hermes (stuffy rule-abiding type stuck in a crappy position). Holly = Amy (The ditz). And Farnsworth can be Captain Hollister.

  • Best crossover since watch?v=apk3-pULxDY&feature=related

  • Ain't the opening, but good luck.

  • yes all the time, I used to watch Red Dwarf a lot

  • epic
