  • Do you always drop the fourth position strand? What happens when you get to less than 10 plait? Your vids are very helpfull. dropping strands is currently my biggest problem. Once I get that down I think I'll be doing pretty good.

  • hey do you have ratios for the lengths of cord? I'm looking for length ratios so that i can experiment with a couple of whips. could you give me ratios for the bellies, 8. 12 ,16, and 20 strand plaits for over all length of the whip lie lengths for 8 ft whips and so on, PM my channel if you can,

    thanks

  • @bowow0807 by ratios, do you mean how long you need to cut strands? if so it is 1.5 times the length

    of the whip.

If you mean by how long to make each belly, here's what I do....

first 8 plait belly , 1/2 the length of the whip...

second belly, 12 plait, entire length of the whip.

    overlay covering this.

Of course there is some kind of core, be it weighted or not,

and strands are dropped to make no bumps in the bellies ending and what not.

If you mean something else I'll try an answer.

  • @1914Sephiroth thanks you answered my question exactly what i need, and also the overlay its made like a 20 plait over the 12 plait belly?

  • @bowow0807 your typical nylon overlay will be 16 strands, The whip will be comprised of an 8 plait belly over

    a core, a 12 plait belly, then a 16 plait overlay, however, some people make them with 3 belly's, 8 , 12 , 16, and

20, I haven't done this, but I would think you would need to use a thinner handle foundation ( not 3/8" nail,

probably something like 1/4" spring steel ) and you would also make the belly's shorter.

    I'd do 8 plait - ( for an 8' whip ) 2-3 ft. , 12 plait 5 ft. and 16-8ft

  • @1914Sephiroth thanks because i found i whip making tutorial on instructables and it shows to plait the 8 strands over the whole length of the whip

    instructables . com /id/Paracord-Bullwhip

  • @bowow0807 That's actually the tutorial i first started making whips on. I wouldn't suggest you use it. It has

not so good techniques, plus it tells how to plait 6 plait incorrectly, and everything came out bad, also he didn't

tell you to remove the inner strands to make it flat.

  • @1914Sephiroth well i think he revised it because it clearly says to remove the inner strands but i think he didn't in the pictures because just to make a proof of concept and in not sure about the 6 plait so i'll look around for a 6 plait tutorial

  • @bowow0807 6 plait is actually simple. What he says to do is on both sides, u1 o2. What you actually do is

u1 o 2 on one side, and u2 o1 on the other. Which side it is doesn't matter however.

But also the way he does the internal construction is not good. Look at EM Brand whips website. Then click

Inside bullwhip. You won't need to do as many layers but you get the general idea. Also plait counts will be

    different.

  • @1914Sephiroth alright thanks, and could you recommend a website/forum/book/ebook to get me started?

  • @bowow0807 go to the club obi wan forum's. Be it leather or nylon, we can help you. Also if you go the Rhett's

whips, he has a dvd showing how he makes his cow whips. It can be adapted to bullwhips.

  • @bowow0807 also, if you want to get into leather, you should get David Morgan's Braiding Fine Leather,

and also Ron Edwards books, I have braiding fine leather, it has the basics of preparing leather for plaiting.

I still don't have Ron Edwards books but they come highly recommended :)

  • @1914Sephiroth Ron Edward's books are a great learning tool for whip making and leather braiding in general.

On a side note, you guys would get a lot more accomplished if you exchanged email addresses or phone numbers instead of carrying on a conversation in the comments section of a YouTube video ;)

  • @steph818181 That's why I recommended to him the Club Obi Wan Forums :)

  • @1914Sephiroth that's some great advice ! tons of good info on there. I would also recommend checking out whip-basics(dot)com Tons of great info on there, and it covers all styles of whips, not as much focus on the Indy related stuff.

  • @steph818181 Since I make mostly indy leather whips, it's great for me. But even though it is "for" indy stuff,

most of the people on their are just regular whip makers, not just indy whip makers.

  • Great video !!

  • thanks for the video! awesome plaiting!

  • just curious, about how many feet of cord do you use for a single whip?

  • @JRocker921 it really depends on how long the whip is, how many bellies, how fast/slow a taper is put on the whip. There's at least a few hundred feet in most any of the whips I make
