I bet even those baby sharks pack a real punch if you get bit by one. I bet their razor teeth hurt just as bad as the granddaddy ones out there. lol As of the early 2000's, i've been wearing blue jeans in the ocean. I went to Carolina Beach yesterday & when i go in the water, i wear jeans. I got stung by a jellyfish in 1990, that's why. But a shark could still bite through 'em probably, though, depending on how tough the jeans are made, it could slow down their teeth from reaching my legs.
@bhsbball10 I was using a 4 inch live mullet hooked in the back, with a 30 pound steel double drop rig/ leader 3 ounce sinker. It's illegal to shark fish from the beach in most cities. Check local laws The fishing is best during the late summer and fall seasons
@bhsbball10 No 24 hours a day you will want to set up a 1/4 mile south of the pier to avoid the people. Unless you fish early in the morning and at night. also bring a cast net for bait. Let me know when you are here I may come visit with you.
Nice work on the surf fishing, and the video. I have fond memories of Surfside, cast netting for mullet, and trapping for blue crab, thanks for sharing your fishing memories. :)
Nice shark! My family and I were in Myrtle for the past 3 weeks and we caught 4 of these guys between 42" and 46"!
On question ... why the dusky shark ID? It looks just like the ones that we caught, and I am (or at least was) pretty sure they were Atlantic Sharpnose. Is there a reason for identifying as a dusky shark? Just wondering, since I'm pretty sure we caught the same species (fins and all look identical).
Way to go! We had it easy ... using much heavier tackle!
@SoloTSi97 It may be a Sharpnose the tail fin was really long for its size so that was one factor in calling it a dusky. did you fish from shore what was your bait ?
@Cathooker2 Gotcha. I'm no expert, just wondered. Yeah, I was fishing from the beach. Caught all of them in the morning (7a-9a) on mullet (not finger mullet, ~8" mullet).
I use a "fishfinder" style rig made with 90lb. 7-strand cable and 7/0 circle hooks. The bait is either just a cut chunk on a single 7/0 circle hook or a whole mullet rigged with cable & 7/0 circle hooks. I caught 2 of 'em each way.
@cjsjake I was using a 4 inch live mullet hooked in the back. with a 30 pound steel double drop rig leader. 25 dollar walmart rod & reel with 14 pound test :) I was lucky to even see it. much less catch it.
@Cathooker2 Maybe in Myrtle Beach it is - I wouldn't be surprised. But it's entirely legal in Beaufort, which is farther south towards Savannah. There is no statewide rule that I'm aware of that bans shark fishing from the surf (partly because sharks will often take the same bait that bull drum will).
Is there are a reason people don't eat sharks like they do other fish? Don't they have much meat on them? Or is it some kinda superstition or somthng :-P ?
@sourdiesal thanks for the info, you may be right. I really dont know for sure. the tail fin was very long so I thought dusky or thresher shark . I looked at some black nose pictures and I may change the name of the video.
Yeah, black nose are real common in the surf but its sometimes easy to miss the smudge on the snout. Nice video though, great that you released it. Cheers
hey man nice video. I am going to our condo this fall at myrtle beach and want to go fishing. I dont have any supplies so i was wondering everything i should get to go on my line, such as weights, hooks, etc. thanks!
Late summer early fall are the best times. use live bait like finger mullet or mud minnows, Where on the strand are you fishing at ? black drum blues spanish mackeral flounder spots rays sharks you never know whats going to hit.
i dont know what part ill be at, but id love to catch another shark, i caught a 4 and a half foot hammerhead shark about 50 lbs off of cherry grove pier last year, and my family had a good dinner lol, but i LOVE to fish
Cool video - but the soundtrack was a little hard to take! :^) Looks a little weird when you pull it in because who wants to wade into the water with a shark! Good release, though. Congrats.
i went fishing a few times but never caught anything i saw this one guy with a massive catfish hanging from his shoulder easily weighing upto 30 pounds
You are so right about the 12 pound test.LOL All you can do is hold on and hope to see it at least once. :)
It was a two foot steel 30# leader with a three ounce weight. I had already lost one fish on a lighter mono leader before I switched to steel. The hook was 1 and a half inchs long with a 3/4 inch gap.
Sounds like the 4ft bull shark I caught at Assateague last summer. I've got about 500 yards of 50lb braid and he peeled about half of it off immediately after being hooked. It took me about 15 min after that to reel him in-I tightened the drag and power cranked him in(as best I could-truth be told he was the more powerful of us-he absolutely tired me out) I would rather have played him to tire him out but I was too afraid he would run me out of line. Yeah definitely by the tail for releasing.
As for legality, I'm unsure what the laws are in the Carolinas as I fish mostly Florida waters, gulfside. In any case, duskies are a more rare that others, so KUDOS to you again for a fine catch and release!
Nice catch! Good to see you released it too. Just one word of advice: you can do really harm (sometimes fatally) a shark by lifting it up into the air. Their internal organs are suprisingly fragile. Best thing to do when relesing a shark, is simply to drag it by it's tail into the surf.
What I learned from watching this is how potentially dangerous a shark could be when you are in final stages of catch or release. You have to be in deep enough water for him to swim (at least during release), and the water is his element. Pretty easy for him to turn and bite.
I see. So there are different kinds of sharks. What is the average size of duskies in the Carolinas' area? It was neat seeing release him after the fight you did to capture him.
maybe it wanted to live

Last year I caught an enormous 5 1/2 foot long shovelnose shark at Marcus Beach (Sunshine Coast, QLD) with a rod that was no bigger than yours..
took about 40 minutes.. alot of patience and two people to swap the rod with every 10 minutes or so cause of the muscle strain.
by god.. probably the peak moment of my life where i wish i had a camera!
a beautiful beach marcus beach is.. but we attracted a large crowd.. and nobody could believe it.. and i certainly wasn't going swimming!
