Is there lots of business for bike messengers in Vancouver as I live in Van. and see a few but just wondering if its popular? Also whats a good fixie to ride around town with as I only have my Downhill bike for Whistler and its horrible to ride downtown.
@swisscosmo if you like alu: Dolan Pre Cursa. If you like steel: Fuji Track or Classic. If you don't like track geometry then any old road/citybike with horizontal dropouts can be converted into a fixie. You just need a fixed rear wheel with a hub width that matches the frame.
@fixedtrix1 That isn't very nice...and I am fairly sure that you are the one being "dumb" here. Or in other words...one of us is missing something. I said a 56 to 58cm bike would be better for someone 5 foot 10 in. than a 54cm bike and you got something confused.
Wow this guy is good. I've had my bike for four days now and I can do pretty good trackstands (1:30). I need to work on the first out of the box thing he does.
Great bike control :D already working on tricks like these, but 3 weeks on a fixie do not really allow "tricking around". A trackstand longer than 15 seconds is already hard. But the time will come :)
@Xormithan nevertheless they completed the first tour de france races on fixies. I agree it's not practical or efficient but it can be done. In a flat city the inability to coast will not work against you. You learn to pseudo coast and relax your legs in other ways.
nice skills man! I'd like to see you dancing with your fixie (for exemplle like in video "Awesome Senegalese bike tricks! " you can see on youtube) - it will be sick!!!
hey im 5 ft 3 and im supposed to be 5 10 in like 2 yrs if i follow in my bros path, (im supposed to be taller) what cm bike and can anyone suggest one for me? oh and how much do wheels cost?
@Flarg96 um this might bee late but im 5ft 3 and i ride a 48 or 18" inch i believe but its small for me i am planing on on getting a 54 and yes it does fit me with ex room
@Flarg96 If you grow 7 inches you will have to get a new bike...period. There isn't a size that will be comfortable at both ends of that spectrum. Get one that is a little big and sell it when you grow out of it.....if ya do. Just cause your bro is 5'10'' doesn't mean you will be. You might stay 5'3'' or be 6'3''. I guess what I am saying is don't buy a bike that is sized for a height that you think you might be because genetics are pretty complicated.
@Flarg96 for now you should get a 52 cm frame youll grow out of it in two years just by a new frame like a 56 if u are 5 10 or 54 and also there are alot of different wheels u can buy and the rage varies
@Flarg96 think you should get a 56 or 57cm frame raise up the saddle should be OK...you can find average wheelsets on ebay for cheap..about 130 most of 700c type
@Flarg96 ok so if youre planning on growing, 54cm, even if you get something thatll fit you slightly smaller when you get that height, you can always upgrade on components, like a stem, or headset, that makes that fitting of the bike perfect for you.. there are many suggestions on how to measure yourself for a bike, but in the end youre the ONLY person who can say what fits better, you can always trade if you grow out of your frame, or simply get tired of it! good luck! (E)quality...
@Flarg96 uuuh 50 or so would be ok for u maybe a 52 tops, depending on what wheels you want you could be looking at 200 each for a really nice hub and rim like a velocity i have was 200 fir th back, but i got a lockring with it id check out bikes direct.com they have really great deals on singlespeeds i got my DAWES sst al there for like 400 and it came with some nice alex rims. just learn more about sizing somewhere else on teh interwebz random people on youtube may not be bike geniuses
Fully brakeless is for the track. When you're on the road, you run a brake. When you buy that blazingly fast sports car, it also comes with top of the line brakes. You can go faster when you know you can brake faster.
Yes, a front brake. Read Sheldon Brown's articles and you'll learn that the front brake is the best one to stop with, and read NYC Bike Snob to learn that the best fixie riders use a brake. Brakeless is for the track, brakes are for the road. Learn it, live it.
i know how much more effective the front brake is. the only reason i ride a fixie over a normal road bike though is for the rush, there is no sense of danger if you have complete confidence that you can stop quiickly whenever you want.
@333JIMB0333 .... play russian roulette then - sounds like your sort of game ... most people I know who ride brakless can stop just as quickly, partly 'cos they ride a lot less aggressivley than I do and partly 'cos they push a much smaller gear... but I don't know any couriers who ride brakless and say they do it 'cos they love the rush of knowing the may not be able to stop in time !!
i garuntee that not having brakes does not make me ride less agressivley, you learn to rely more on turning than stopping. as for a low gear...im running 48/16 (54/16 on my old bike)
@333JIMB0333 What you say makes sense, and getting a rush is all find and good, but only as long as you're not putting others in danger (either risking harming them or risking them harming you, as hurting someone accidentally can be quite traumatizing in and of itself).
thanks for siding with me, but why is everyone so soft? im not gonna hurt anyone on a bike, they will hurt me...i have had a collision with a car that cost $1700. i have also had my leg run over by a suv that led to a 6 month recovery. "Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today." live by that and you'll find life a lot more interesting.
@333JIMB0333 I've seen a brakeless fixie plow into pedestrians and cause far more damage to those impacted than himself. Regardless of who was at a fault, a brake could have saved the day.
