i grew up a huge cliff fan...but as I've gotten better and i opened my mind to different styles of music and bassist i now see how overrated he really was...its just fact his bass lines were nothing great he used nothing but simple triads in his solos and his bass lines were all root fifth octave...amateur

Not really. Go listen to the master bass tracks of Fade to Black and Master of Puppets, not to mention Orion. The bass only versions are all over YouTube, and he was much more than that. Granted, sometimes people think he's the greatest because of his distortion, and it can be a bit overrated, but in general he was extremely good as a musician let alone a bassist. Look up his Anesthesia solo live in '83, that really shows his technique and potential.
