It is a beautiful song....very deserving of a young Marine. I wish the best for his family. Thank you for sharing it with us. Proud 4th generation American-Irish Soldier who fights for his brothers and to uphold a long tradition. Those who understand will, the rest of you will never know.

great tribute from a great band! Semper Fi Sgt. Farrar, from a future Marine. Thank you for your service, you'll never be forgotten. And props to DKM for an amazing rendition of such a great song
awsome song, dropkicks are a great band for doing this, SRG Farra brothers a teacher at my old school, great guy. RIP. HOOYA to all our troops...SEMPER PARATUS USCG
When I think about these guys doing this, and playing at Sgt. Farrar's funeral it brings a tear to my eye. Beyond their musical talent, it is one of the reason I think these guys are one of the greatest band around.
Sgt Farrar died in an accident. When you go to war, and you get killed in combat, at least you died in action. Dying in an accident is so.... pointless, and it shouldn't have happened, army equipment should be safe for use without being electrocuted. All the worse for the ones left behind, not to mention electrocution is usually a painful death. Poor guy, Poor children, Poor wife...
@scudbunny Sgt. Andrew Farrar was a soldier who fought in Iraq. He was a major DKM fan and he told his family if he were to die in battle, he would want fields of athenry played at his funeral. so DKM wrote him a ballad version.
Andrew you are sooo soo truly missed. I hope you know how much Melissa and the boys miss you. If you know please if anyway give her comfort knowing you are ok and she will one day see you again. xo RIP always a hero to us.
BTW, this version of Fields of Athenry was written for Sgt. Farrar's funeral. DKM made three one of a kind CD's with this song included on it. One was placed in Sgt. Farrar's casket, one was given to his widow, and the third was given to his mother. Sgt. Farrar loved the DKM's, and mentioned in a letter home that he would like this song played at his funeral when he died. The DKM's were informed of this and attended his funeral to play this song.

It does not matter if you support a war, but for Gods sake support those that have to fight it! Soldiers do have a choice in the matter. I live literally next door to a USMC base, these people are our next door neighbors, co-workers, drinking buddies and friends. We have seen them leave, and seen them come home, and we we attended the memorials for those that did not make it home. These men and women a humans like the rest of us. if you cant respect that, I can't respect you. Thanks DKM!
@Joalbrito well first off the "freedom fighters" i mentioned aren't americans at all they are Iraqis and afghanis who were born there and have lived there their whole lives. and second: even if it is a fight that cannot be won, should we just puss out and call it quits because the whole world tells us to?
@13GoodRats Yes, you should. U should because every thinking person in the world knows that this war is a mistake and a crime and the only ones who win from it are the CEO's of several corporations. There is no use of this war, so the sooner the NATO forces pull out the less people will die there. The "democratic forces" caused enough harm in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they should pull out immediately.
@joalbrito Im sorry you feel that way, that the people who want to make a difference in the world arent willing to do it for free. Im pretty sure you wouldnt make your career on a volunteer basis now would you? i thought not. please respect those brave enough to die for your country
@13GoodRats I am not from the USA but unfortunately the shitty corrupted government of my country supported you in Iraq and Afghanistan. I want to ask you what difference do these killers do in the world? The only thing they did was to enable some corporate fucks to become richer, and ti do this they killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people. And there is a difference between a career, and to be a murderer and be paid for that. I will never respect some brainwashed nationalist killers!
the soldiers shouldn't even be in iraq or afghanistan.
now they come home with ptsd, and all sorts of psychological horrors..my heart goes out to them. They should not have to fight a war for the politicians. In fact if the politicians want a war they can put a tin hat on and go themselves.
i feel so sorry for the soldiers, they will never be able to live normal lives again.
@Bhouncer Our grandfathers saw worse, they did not call it ptsd, they just never ate rice again. We have lost our warrior culture. If we respected our troops and stood behind them, it would be a lot better for them. Unfortunately they are called baby killers and spit on when they get home. Also stupid hippies will not let us kick ass over there. Our boys are doing the best they can with two hands tied behind their backs. We could have been done by now if we were not worried about civis
@CjAz91 it would be naive to think that in any armed conflicts, that soldiers do not commit war crimes. It is not an ideal conflict they are fighting..they are fighting a guerilla warfare..
One important aspect of the problem is that, why the heck, are the brave warriors over there and making the world pissed of at America once again? I mean, the USA is one of the best countries on this earth but you don't have to make more people upset, instead just watch your borders n do nothing at all, then the world will have to coop with the problems instead of sending thousands of young Americans over there, btw, Im not American but I love the country anyhow, so dont judge me please
@CjAz91 WTF? bro, did you say no one from nam has PTSD? HALF of the fucking soldiers came back were totally fucked. Suicide rate was through the roof for them. seriously, learn some damn history.
What this song was about is beyond reproach it's the Murphy's doing the only thing a person can do. Mour the loss of a friend and fan. Please don't lose sight of that.
I was there with him he was a great Marine and I can only say sorry to his widow and children. He actually died on his birthday. Such a sad day that will forever be burned into my memory. For all of you commenting we shouldn't be over there and so on, Andrew would boot stomp your unpatriotic throats. For anyone asking where they can buy the CD it was a tribute where all proceeds went to his children. I don't think the website is still up, but I believe you may be able to find it on their website
its no longer available, it was a limited availability in order to raise money for the Farrar family. Though the CD is no longer available, I believe that they still have the website for donating money to the family but I'm not 100% sure on that.
@Whipplets Lemme tell you somthing about those marines. They are over in the middle east because they want to be there. there is no draft going on, people arent being forced to war. These marines are volunteers, willing to serve they're country. instead of bitching about it, support our troops
@TheJottDynasty Those marines do not want to be there. Most have joined the forces because they were either poor and couldn't afford education and the army gives them hope for a better future, or because they wanted to protect their counrty. definately not because they wanted to go fight impossible and illegal (Iraq) wars far away that have nothing to do with the USA, just with oil, power and the war against Islam that Geogre "crusader" Bush fought.
@1991Tijmen1991 I joined the Marines not because of poverty, not because I am uneducated, not because I wanted a better future, but because this country has given me, and everyone else so much. If I have to go and fight a senseless, "illegal" war, and get killed then I promise you kid that I will do it with a smile on my face. Dont make assumptions sitting there at a mighty 18 years old on something you couldn't understand in the least. BTW there is a difference between Marines and the Army.
@marquitoness Dude, I know that lots of soldiers/marines/other defense staff joined out of patriotism, family etc, but I also know for a fact that the army and navy recruit poor people and give them hope for the future by luring them into the militairy. My age has nothing to do with my knowledge, since I am probably more aware of world matters than most older people. This is due to the fact that I read newspapers on a daily basis, and do my own research on interesting matters like this.
@1991Tijmen1991 reading news papers doesn't mean you know a damn thing man.
the military, any branch can give you a huge leg up in life. and its something you can be proud of. it gives people who have messed up in life, a equal shot as those who haven't. Everyone is equal in the military, it's one of the few places where thats true.
everyone who joins a branch of service knows what they are getting into.
I have the right to my opinion. Since I have lost two brothers and four friends in these wars. I want our men back. I don't want to lose one more marine or any other member of the armed forces. I have earned the right to say I want to see them home. I have four other members of my family in the forces. You should have read the post for what it was. Not for what you thought it was.
I would never join the military, I don't believe in politics or fighting for a country that won't fight for you, but i do commend the people that do, you don't have to respect the government, respect the war, but at least respect the soilders, but that's just how I look at it...
Thank you Sgt. Farrar and all other brave Americans who put there well being aside for the rest of our great nation. You and your sacrifice will never be forgotten. God bless you and your families.
I'm so bummed I can't join the Lads overseas with the U.N in Chad and Haiti. I've been tryin to enlist to Collins Barracks in Co. Cork for the last 4 months now and I've had feck all luck so far but I wont give till I'm servin Eire with the Lads overseas.
@gabba1gabba1hey A lot of innocent people died in Iraq and Afghanistan. And to be part of this war which was a crime against humanity makes every soldier a criminal. I wonder how is it possible no one to be imprisoned for the crimes of the US and NATO forces. In nazi Germany the soldiers were forced to serve their government-it was not their fault. Here-it's different. These soldiers were not forced to join the army..they chose to kill and die for their government on their own. They are criminals
@gabba1gabba1hey I don't support or like the taliban but... it makes no sense to believe in the US deffinition of terrorism, and to believe that the US brings democracy to Afghanistan. The evil forces of the world are on Wallstreet, in the banks,in the multinational corporations,in the CIA,in the white house, not in the Middle East.I dont like religious people but if some people defend themselves against the imperialist forces of NATO and kill some american or european soldiers it's not a tragedy
@joalbrito most afghanistani/Iraqi freedom fighters believe that if America pulls out, there will be a slaughter campaign, and millions of innocent civilians will be killed. even if America isn't completely eradicating the terrorist forces, they are at least keeping them in their holes at most, and preventing the worst of the massacres. I say that is better than nothing
@13GoodRats I don't think that freedom fighters is the appropriate name for these murderers. They shouldn't have attacked Iraq and Afghan. in the first place, but even now there is no use of staying there any longer. the war that the iraqi and afghan people are leading is a partisan war, and every person who is familiar with history and war strategies will tell you that this type of war cannot be won. Even if they stay there 100 years there would still be a lot of resistance.
@joalbrito the war is not a good thing, war rarely is but those soldiers out their who are protecting your ass so you dont have to go out there and get shot at all day and worry about just sleeping at night because you could be bombed, those men should be respected more than any president or any congressmen because it it wasnt for them your sorry ass would be holding a gun you dont know how to use and have you picturing the guy you killed that day just so he didnt kill you...god bless our troops
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@hiddenhawk13 Protecting me?! Maybe protecting the interests of the CEOs and the bankers but not me. Iraq has not attacked the USA or my country, so u can't say that the NATO forces are protecting something, except the corporate agenda, of course. Iraq didn't have WMDs, and they wouldn't attack the western world. That was a lie. So the troops didn't defend anything... they went there to murder for money, they are killers and should not be respected!
@13GoodRats Each day the "freedom fighters" (actually they fight against freedom) stay in Iraq means several more innocent people dead. And the NATO forces are not preventing the worst of the massacres - they caused them. Also the term "terrorists" is completely inappropriate when referring to people who just want to protect their freedom and independence from America as well as their families.
@13GoodRats And how can u explain to me that there is no one from the white house in prison for this "mistake"? How is it possible that there is no soldier of army officer in prison for the atrocities in the iraqi prisons? I call these people monsters and freaks.. and I don't see why I should support or respect them.
@joalbrito Go do some research num nuts, WE have officers and non coms in prison as well as mercenary forces. If you payed attention to the news over the last few years you would have noticed. Unless you were to young and didn't care before. As for being murderers? Its called WAR and people try to kill you. Makes people a little more edgy when the enemy fights gorilla style b/c you never know who will blow up next. At least WE don't intentionally kill peaceful civilians or children. Unlike some.
@MrDCBarnes You do not have any major officer in prison and you should. Also the people from the CIA responsible for this were not punished, and when in Canada protesters wanted Bush to be imprisoned (after Obama's election) some of them were arrested for... disturbing the peace. And what other choice do the iraqi people have if they want independence from the western fascist corporatocracy other than fighting gorilla style. And YOU intentionally joined an immoral war for profit,so its YOUR fault
@joalbrito In my country we don't (generally) join the military for profit. To be honest I took a large pay cut to join when I did. And corruption levels are a lot lower then you might think coming from Bulgaria. The corruption comes from politicians.
I didn't say the style of warfare they are engaged in was a bad thing. In there position I would do the same. Instead of attacking people who follow orders, if you disagree then do something about it (peacefully). Maybe you should join the UN.
@MrDCBarnes But the UN is designed to serve corporate interests from its very beginning. The truth is that if you want to end this shit in some european country or in America, there is no chance that you will get the power to do this from some elections or such things. Thanks to the mass media propaganda machine, no one who wants positive change will ever get power by democratic means.I attack those people not because I hate them but because the only way to stop war is if no one joins the military
@joalbrito Yes the UN was set up with certain rules in place to allow the US to basically ignore it whenever it wanted or maneuver it how they saw fit, but that is slowly changing for the better. And the more people who join and want to make difference the better its chances. Media is a joke. But military's are not the reasons for war. Pride, desire, jealousy, not being able to work thing out verbally, greed and intolerant religious beliefs are just to name a few. War won't stop. Ever.
@MrDCBarnes War won't stop until there are oppressive institutions such as corporations, governments, military, CIA, KGB, and police ;) But my point was that I don't hate people in the military (at least the regular soldiers). They are just confused. However, I attack them because I believe that right now the only way to prevent this from happening again is to: 1. convince people not to join the military 2. convince people not to pay their taxes in times of war.
@joalbrito I never comment on these things, but how dare you attack Soldiers. Everything that you take for granted we have died for. The freedom that you have to do whatever you please is something that we have shed bood, sweat, and tears for. The minute you have a best friend die in your arms then you can say we are confused. Until that day know that we march with our heads held high and will serve the USA with pride. Regardless of whether we agree with the war.
@xreiderx You have died for anything I take for granted?! In the western world there is no freedom, so YOU have died for nothing. And stop this nationalist bullshit. In Iraq and Afghanistan and in Vietnam you were not defending your country. You were defending corporate and fascist interests.
@joalbrito Regardless of whether it's my country I'm fighting for or the other country or whoever, the reason I enlisted is for the guys to my left and right. I enlisted in hopes that I could go over there and help the other guys get back soon. We don't just do it for the country even though that is part of the reason, we do it for each other.
@slowrunn3r88 You do it only for the corporate fascist CEOs and bankers that sit safe in their homes and make millions per year, while you are helping them in raping the world!
@joalbrito And proud to fight for your ignorant arse's right to be ignorant. There have been very little incidents with the terrorists since 9/11. Why? Because we're keeping them at bay over there. You're welcome.
@slowrunn3r88 Or because the fascists don't need an excuse anymore to oppress, attack, imprison and kill people. They got their excuse, and they don't need another one for now.
@joalbrito why do you claim to know so much? the minute you have been through what anyone in my unti including myself has seen then i will take what you say into consideration. you're just a wannabe anarchist who says damn the man and fuck the moral majority. we serve a country. we serve a purpose whether or not you want to agree with it. soldiers are the reason you have a voice and rights. past, present and future.
@xreiderx Yeah... you serve a purpose... you fight for the wealth of the few, that's what you are doing. You see, the people who fought in WWI believed that this was the last war and they fought to end wars. You believe that you are fighting to save your country from the muslims, and to stop terrorism. It doesn't matter what you think you are doing. The only thing it matters is what you really did there You enslaved a free and independent nation, killed 1/3 of its population and ruined the rest
just because your country has fallen from its former military imperialism doesnt mean you should be a whiner, be nice we might be taking you over next, god knows your country has no legs to stand on
you know what im sick and tired of you scumbags who think you know what your talking about. Yeah the US has its problums but were sure as hell not "imperialistic" The men/women who serve our country are the most honorable people around, and if you cant respect that get the fuck out. God Bless the Troops
this song is about fighting against the landlords who kept us down in the famine by starving us (Irish) out. by the way, stijnx, you are completely right. but lets go further, lets go to vietnam. when we joined years after the french and the south vietnamese had been fighting. we made that all about us but still we lost lol.
Respect the troops for doing this, Disrespect the government for keep sending troops in this never ending warzone. Im against the war but I have respect for the troops
Disgraceful use of the song. Seems like some don't know the history behind the song.

13GoodRats 1 year ago
@13GoodRats Yes, you should. U should because every thinking person in the world knows that this war is a mistake and a crime and the only ones who win from it are the CEO's of several corporations. There is no use of this war, so the sooner the NATO forces pull out the less people will die there. The "democratic forces" caused enough harm in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they should pull out immediately.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@13GoodRats In response to your second question asking if we should just puss out and call it quits because the whole world tells us to: Yes.

@joalbrito Im sorry you feel that way, that the people who want to make a difference in the world arent willing to do it for free. Im pretty sure you wouldnt make your career on a volunteer basis now would you? i thought not. please respect those brave enough to die for your country
13GoodRats 1 year ago
@13GoodRats I am not from the USA but unfortunately the shitty corrupted government of my country supported you in Iraq and Afghanistan. I want to ask you what difference do these killers do in the world? The only thing they did was to enable some corporate fucks to become richer, and ti do this they killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people. And there is a difference between a career, and to be a murderer and be paid for that. I will never respect some brainwashed nationalist killers!
joalbrito 1 year ago
the soldiers shouldn't even be in iraq or afghanistan.
now they come home with ptsd, and all sorts of psychological horrors..my heart goes out to them. They should not have to fight a war for the politicians. In fact if the politicians want a war they can put a tin hat on and go themselves.
i feel so sorry for the soldiers, they will never be able to live normal lives again.
Bhouncer 1 year ago
@Bhouncer Our grandfathers saw worse, they did not call it ptsd, they just never ate rice again. We have lost our warrior culture. If we respected our troops and stood behind them, it would be a lot better for them. Unfortunately they are called baby killers and spit on when they get home. Also stupid hippies will not let us kick ass over there. Our boys are doing the best they can with two hands tied behind their backs. We could have been done by now if we were not worried about civis
CjAz91 1 year ago
@CjAz91 it would be naive to think that in any armed conflicts, that soldiers do not commit war crimes. It is not an ideal conflict they are fighting..they are fighting a guerilla warfare..
Bhouncer 1 year ago
@CjAz91

TheJottDynasty 1 year ago
@TheJottDynasty Those marines do not want to be there. Most have joined the forces because they were either poor and couldn't afford education and the army gives them hope for a better future, or because they wanted to protect their counrty. definately not because they wanted to go fight impossible and illegal (Iraq) wars far away that have nothing to do with the USA, just with oil, power and the war against Islam that Geogre "crusader" Bush fought.
1991Tijmen1991 1 year ago

They are criminals
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito do you know anything about the taliban?
gabba1gabba1hey 1 year ago
@gabba1gabba1hey I don't support or like the taliban but... it makes no sense to believe in the US deffinition of terrorism, and to believe that the US brings democracy to Afghanistan. The evil forces of the world are on Wallstreet, in the banks,in the multinational corporations,in the CIA,in the white house, not in the Middle East.I dont like religious people but if some people defend themselves against the imperialist forces of NATO and kill some american or european soldiers it's not a tragedy
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito most afghanistani/Iraqi freedom fighters believe that if America pulls out, there will be a slaughter campaign, and millions of innocent civilians will be killed. even if America isn't completely eradicating the terrorist forces, they are at least keeping them in their holes at most, and preventing the worst of the massacres. I say that is better than nothing
13GoodRats 1 year ago
@13GoodRats I don't think that freedom fighters is the appropriate name for these murderers. They shouldn't have attacked Iraq and Afghan. in the first place, but even now there is no use of staying there any longer. the war that the iraqi and afghan people are leading is a partisan war, and every person who is familiar with history and war strategies will tell you that this type of war cannot be won. Even if they stay there 100 years there would still be a lot of resistance.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito the war is not a good thing, war rarely is but those soldiers out their who are protecting your ass so you dont have to go out there and get shot at all day and worry about just sleeping at night because you could be bombed, those men should be respected more than any president or any congressmen because it it wasnt for them your sorry ass would be holding a gun you dont know how to use and have you picturing the guy you killed that day just so he didnt kill you...god bless our troops

So the troops didn't defend anything... they went there to murder for money, they are killers and should not be respected!
joalbrito 1 year ago

TheCjd602 1 year ago
@13GoodRats Each day the "freedom fighters" (actually they fight against freedom) stay in Iraq means several more innocent people dead. And the NATO forces are not preventing the worst of the massacres - they caused them. Also the term "terrorists" is completely inappropriate when referring to people who just want to protect their freedom and independence from America as well as their families.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@13GoodRats And how can u explain to me that there is no one from the white house in prison for this "mistake"? How is it possible that there is no soldier of army officer in prison for the atrocities in the iraqi prisons? I call these people monsters and freaks.. and I don't see why I should support or respect them.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito Go do some research num nuts, WE have officers and non coms in prison as well as mercenary forces. If you payed attention to the news over the last few years you would have noticed. Unless you were to young and didn't care before. As for being murderers? Its called WAR and people try to kill you. Makes people a little more edgy when the enemy fights gorilla style b/c you never know who will blow up next. At least WE don't intentionally kill peaceful civilians or children. Unlike some.
MrDCBarnes 1 year ago
@MrDCBarnes You do not have any major officer in prison and you should. Also the people from the CIA responsible for this were not punished, and when in Canada protesters wanted Bush to be imprisoned (after Obama's election) some of them were arrested for... disturbing the peace. And what other choice do the iraqi people have if they want independence from the western fascist corporatocracy other than fighting gorilla style. And YOU intentionally joined an immoral war for profit,so its YOUR fault
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito In my country we don't (generally) join the military for profit. To be honest I took a large pay cut to join when I did. And corruption levels are a lot lower then you might think coming from Bulgaria. The corruption comes from politicians.
I didn't say the style of warfare they are engaged in was a bad thing. In there position I would do the same. Instead of attacking people who follow orders, if you disagree then do something about it (peacefully). Maybe you should join the UN.
MrDCBarnes 1 year ago
@MrDCBarnes But the UN is designed to serve corporate interests from its very beginning. The truth is that if you want to end this shit in some european country or in America, there is no chance that you will get the power to do this from some elections or such things. Thanks to the mass media propaganda machine, no one who wants positive change will ever get power by democratic means.I attack those people not because I hate them but because the only way to stop war is if no one joins the military
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito Yes the UN was set up with certain rules in place to allow the US to basically ignore it whenever it wanted or maneuver it how they saw fit, but that is slowly changing for the better. And the more people who join and want to make difference the better its chances. Media is a joke. But military's are not the reasons for war. Pride, desire, jealousy, not being able to work thing out verbally, greed and intolerant religious beliefs are just to name a few. War won't stop. Ever.
MrDCBarnes 1 year ago
@MrDCBarnes War won't stop until there are oppressive institutions such as corporations, governments, military, CIA, KGB, and police ;) But my point was that I don't hate people in the military (at least the regular soldiers). They are just confused. However, I attack them because I believe that right now the only way to prevent this from happening again is to: 1. convince people not to join the military 2. convince people not to pay their taxes in times of war.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito I never comment on these things, but how dare you attack Soldiers. Everything that you take for granted we have died for. The freedom that you have to do whatever you please is something that we have shed bood, sweat, and tears for. The minute you have a best friend die in your arms then you can say we are confused. Until that day know that we march with our heads held high and will serve the USA with pride. Regardless of whether we agree with the war.
xreiderx 1 year ago
@xreiderx You have died for anything I take for granted?! In the western world there is no freedom, so YOU have died for nothing. And stop this nationalist bullshit. In Iraq and Afghanistan and in Vietnam you were not defending your country. You were defending corporate and fascist interests.
joalbrito 1 year ago
@joalbrito Regardless of whether it's my country I'm fighting for or the other country or whoever, the reason I enlisted is for the guys to my left and right.
