Well, it's been a few years. Anyone know what the official report as to the cause of the derailment was? Wind? Broken rail? If wind, how fast was it blowing?

i think i was the first person to see this wreck. we went right up to the bridge and there was no one else even around yet. engineer was pretty shook up. it was friggin windy that day.

There was a really bad derailment not far from here last year in Spy Hill. That was not fun to clean up.

Holy crap! That would be a real scary ride for the train engineer... Notice the first two container cars are derailed too! The Engine is on track by miracle. If that was a wind that blew off the train- the middle part of the train would of dragged the engine and back cars off the bridge.

But who knows. I always was questioning myself - how stable/unstable those double stacks are. The truth is- theyre not! In Russia and EU they never doublestack the containers, because of overhead power.

@digimaks . It was the wind that blew it off and I guess it was lucky it let go at the 2nd car. After the wind went through, there were a lot of people cleaning up trees and and garbage. A few little lean to type shelters blew off also. It is referred to as a "plow wind"

my uncle was in that wreck,he made it through but just bairly it was the 2 engines and 1 other car that made it across then the 4th car was bairly on the track, but ya they said it was kokanee beer, and plasma screen tv's, i wonder if this guy went and got any free beer.

The engineer was going over when he saw the train being blown off in his mirror, so he gunned it, then changed his underwear.

@GEES44DC It's less likely that the engines would blow over. Intermodal containers are pretty light, especially when empty. They are, after all, just made with thin sheets of aluminum. In any case, it must have been incredible wind.

CN is actually pretty bad. The canadian government is upset with them. They have polluted many lakes/rivers through neglect through managment who knew about it. Two employees were disciplined for not driving over a bridge that they thought unsafe. They were forced to the next day, and the bridge collapsed. The management admitted they knew the bridge was rotten, but had not bothered to fix it for years.

I had a version of "smoke along the tracks" by Dwight Yoakam and it fit good. The music that is on there now id from YouTubes music liabrary....which sucks. They mute the audio and then you can add in some of there music if you like, but you also loose any other sound you have in there like voices, or background noise, etc...it sucks. They did a couple of my vids. I just make sure I don't use any WMG artists now...stick with kinda unknown or smaller label guys now..give them the exposure.lol

WOW!!! That must have shook the ground! It's amazing how heavy those things are. The trucks alone weigh 10,000lbs with the axles weighing 2,500lbs each.

Its amazing and weird how such heavy machines with fixed flanged wheels can just derail off the tracks with such ease. On some derailment aftermath pictures I have seen, I am like: "How the heck that train ended up like that?". Lots of derailments, very few videos.

No, there is no warning system here. This was a "freak" wind or what everyone one was calling a "Plow" wind. You probably would have a tough time recreating all the factors just right that this would happen again.

Yep, no one was hurt. It was what is called a "Plow Wind". From what I read, it is like a wall of wind. There was a small thunder storm that went through that morning and the timing was "perfect", the train was on the bridge when it got hit by the wind, the engineer gave it all it had and made it across with 2 cars. Some containers were empty or very light. Timing.
