  • omg yes haha great job

  • Is this at all related to the ancient hydraulis?

  • @ollieproductions1 The ancient hydraulis used water as a source of power to blow wind through organ pipes. A modern pipe organ is a hydraulis if the electricity that runs the blower was generated by a waterfall. The hydraulophone differs from the hydraulis in that the sound originates by water and also that the user-interface is by touching water. The hydraulis (including modern hydroelectricity-powered pipe organs) is played by pressing wooden or plastic keys, not by touching water.

  • I would be so tempted to tip my head down and take a drink.

    Just looking at that makes me thirsty.

  • @halfling2 'cept a lot of school tours go through the museum so the hands of countless small children...well, people of all ages... *lol* have been in that water. Not counting the birds. XD

  • wow so cool

  • It just takes a little practice. If you happen to live near a park that has a hydraulophone, you'll probably get quite good at playing it.

    When you're first learning, it sometimes helps to rest your fingers on the edge of each jet that you want to interact with. As you become more skilled you can start to hover over the finger holes in various positions, and learn how to "bend" each of the notes, or change the timbre and dynamics more...

  • @hydraulist is that on a PUBLIC park???? wtf??

  • i don't get it

    it's cool but how do u learn how to play it?

  • Muse RULEZ...awesome job too >.>'

  • muse is a great band but that covers sucks.... sorry man...

  • muse is not the original artist.. sorry man..

  • that is the great Pink Floyd... not some band named muse

  • nop the song is a folklorical song from USA, the gratest version is from "the Animals"... =)

  • @norinclayanger in wich album can i find it... 8-) ....¬¬

  • damn it, i feel like an idiot now... the original is by The Animals.. but i still believe Pink Floyd did the best cover...

    Oh well, i tip my hat to you...

  • can you tell me where can i find it? please...

  • i think its on one of their boot leg albums... not sure tho...

  • "damn it, i feel like an idiot now... the original is by The Animals.. but i still believe Pink Floyd did the best cover..."

    Ok, that's two strikes for you, son. The song is traditional (anonymous) and dates back to at least the early 1930s, with Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie both recording versions.

    It was then covered by Joan Baez in 1960, Bob Dylan in 1961 and then the Animals (who made it a hit) did a version in 1964.

    Never heard Pink Floyd's version.

  • yes i know. just didn't feel it was worth posting again... i did some research after that, and figured everything out... but for a backwoods country boy, aint no big deal (meaning me)....

  • @norinclayanger Dude, read the info, the original is NOT from pink floyd. That song is much much older, and noone is really certain who the original creator is, but what's amazing is that it's survived for such a long time, and is still being covered, even today.

  • ok "dude" you aint gotta tell me what i already know! i been told that enough and am getting sick of it...

  • @norinclayanger Nah man, they don't know who wrote it originally, though Pink Floyd DID do a cover of it.

  • No it isn't. No one knows the real origins of this song, but it predates Pink Floyd and The Animals.

  • damn the water sounds awesome with the song

  • Have you played hydraulophone?

    It's not like a piano which is velocity sensitive.

    It responds to absement and presement (the integral of displacement), so it takes time for notes to build up (i.e. there's some delay).

    Also notes evolve as you partially block less or more of a given water jet.

    Despite the delay, the correlation between visual and audio is quite good, i.e. if you partly bock a jet at one edge, it sound sad and also looks "droopy", as the water arcs across.

  • Where is this? Were is the Ontario Science Center

  • 770 Don Mills Road, Toronto, Ontario.

    This particular hydraulophone installation runs 24 hours a day, so you can play at any time.

  • this is an amazing song I learned to play it on the flute when I was in 8th grade and I don't think I have forgotten it. Right now I'm learning to play the electric guitar. I hope I can be eventually be a rock legend like Randy Rhoads although I know I will never be as good as him.

  • Being new at this waterpipe stuff, I have to say mine hasn't so much output. Also the sound isn't so nice. Wifey blames it on the alcohol. I think on the other hand it's the tuning. Anybody?

  • that's a really cool instrument =)

  • Very good, but not exactly a flowing performance! :D

  • Amazing....luv it!

  • omg thats sick... i want that thing to come over here!

  • Wow. That's really interesting. I'd love to get to play one, but I live in the middle of no where. I love House of the Rising Sun, too. It fits well with the instrument.

  • Science center? "Mommy, what's that song about?"

  • I think you're referring to the 4th verse:

    Oh mother tell your children;

    Not to do what I have done;

    Spend your lives in sin and misery;

    In the House of the Rising Sun;

    The song warns children of the dangers of drinking, gambling, and prostitution.

  • goood

  • Canadians are so frikkin talented!!

  • ohhh yes heyhey

  • Thank you!

  • awsome, i wounder how the fingering is on that? it seems more complex than a piano.

  • To see some closeup example pictures showing the fingering for a simple familiar song, try Google search for "hydraulophone lesson", where there's a brief explanation of "finger embouchure".

  • As a water author, researcher, and Native American flute player - I find this water instrument as another reminder of the creative energy of water.

  • yes. yes it is

  • Then what is it?

  • awesome instrument man!!! yeah

  • niice man im gonna get one in my back garden!! aha =]

  • omg is that a water fountin or a real insturment? lol

  • awwh, I love this song. You're really good :D haha my friends and I love playing random things (erm, a failed marry had a little lamb..) and stuff on the water pipe organ at the science center xD

  • That's an impressive instrument, I would love to get my hands on one..

  • House of the Rising Sun

  • Me too... what song is that again?

  • I love this song! That is such a beautiful instrument.
